👍👏 Nothing but admiration for excellent decision making for your health & well being, we're just sitting in comfort watching. If it really bugs YOU missing that bit....combine it with another trip some other time.

Thanks for that. I think I’ll be able to live with missing that road walk.

Smart decision making Kurt. Really tough but your wife will thank you for it 😍 I have a huge respect for what you've done to date and this changes nothing.

Hi again kurt. Rest assured u done the right thing, the trail isnt worth dieing over. Im 56 and been tramping, mountaineering since i was 14. 3 years ago for the 1st time ever i had a close call with having hypothermia. This was due to my mountaineering jacket being old and no longer waterproof. There is a saying, there is no such thing as being cold, its called not having the right gear. Ive been in so many storms and freezing weather and never been hypothermia cold. Some tips for nz weather. I never do multi day tramps without my storm gear in nz, that is overtrou, mittens, balaclava or beanie, longjohns all just in case. Between us we have a bivvy bag for emergencys or 1 each without a tent. Keep your head warm with marino or polypro. In mountains ive had to put my down jacket on a few times under my rain jacket. Dont wear any cotton, always wool or polypro. Sounds like the cause of this for u is a rain jacket that is no longer working properly, it should bead and water run off. The only wet u should be getting is from sweat and if u have marino and not cotton then that is warm when wet(not saturated). U must keep your head warm with a beanie/balaclava when cold and put overtrou on to insulate your legs. Knowing ur heading to the southern alps i would look at your wet weather gear and replace your jacket. Remember there is gear that u can use that will allow u to not get cold in freezing conditions, even if it means a bit more weight it is worth it As soon as u start getting cold, stop and kit up with more clothing, dont wait it out. All the best and i look 4ward to ur vid tomorro

Thanks for that info. I think my biggest issue was layering…or lack of it. We were out there for over 7 hours…no raincoat (that a hiker wants to carry) is going to keep rain out that long. As the saying goes, a raincoat isn’t meant to keep you dry, it’s meant to keep you warm. Had I had the layering I’ve used before, I think I would have been fine. Your info here is a goldmine for all hikers. I hope people copy and paste it so they can refer back to it again. Thanks so much.

Right decision Kurt and those right decisions are hard to make when you are hyperthermic, the mind is a bit jumbled up. It’s good when another person can recognise the symptoms.

It was helpful to have others confirm the decision at the time for sure.

That's such a classic tramping experience! Last day of long tramp, colder weather, some rain, some 4wd trails, multiple river crossings....feeling damp under your raincoat...turns to feeling cold! And then ...waiting in cold wet clothes at the road end, wondering when (or even if) the transport will arrive. ..So it was great to see the gang in the pub in Methven eating burgers! (Except "Shortdays"!)

    Wise decision there.
I recommend Macpac Traverse rain gear its good for Kiwi conditions and does not wet through.👍👍

That is actually what I have. But I think I’ve sweat in it so much it doesn’t hold out the rain so well anymore. My problem was I only had one layer on under the jacket. Had I been wearing even one more, I think I would have been ok. Live and learn I guess.

Better to be safe than sorry. It's your TA. You have to make the call as you see fit.
Just an observation - talking unusually faster in this video.
A good call! A sensible call! A safe call! Well done. IT'S YOUR TA ... you make the call as you see fit. 100% tautoko your decision 🙏
