    Congrats Fran!
    As part of my recommendation I had to write a fair bit about your professional character and provide examples of your work, URL links etc. I'm sure they would have checked all that and vetted you properly, along with the input from the other three referees.

      One way of of getting appreciated and represented as an engineer and from Dave's recent video "eevBLAB 86 - On The Importance Of Diligence" and I can see it with Fran and her tools at work and especially when building things. I don't think she'll be messed about again like one time when she said about some company asking her to design guitar peddles for them.

      I know what you mean about lacking the "expected" academic credentials. I battled the same thing in my career in quality assurance (after many years as an electronics tech.) I could counter it with ongoing professional education and certification, co-authoring a book in my specialty, and working in standards-writing committees. But I know I had it easier than many of the ladies I knew because I didn't have to overcome the sexism they faced.

    Congratulations Fran on your advancement in the IEEE organization. I have been a member since 1977. Great organization and you are so deserving of this prestigious recognition. All things are possible for those that truly believe in doing the best at what they do and more so when what they do helps others in any way possible. One day Fran you are liable to be filling Susan’s shoes. All you need to do is be active wherever you can in IEEE activities and continue to add to your IEEE curriculum vitae’s points. When the time is right, toss your hat into the ring. When the members cast their votes, you just might be pleasantly surprised how many IEEE members follow your work and would cast their vote in your favor! You would definitely have my vote! Again, congratulations on an honor well deserved!

    Congrats Fran! It is so amazing to hear about your life long experiences and how much you have contributed to the world of electronic engineering, technology, music, including designing pedals, and doing a fine job documenting it on RUclips for everyone to see!
    Any company that has failed to even give you a chance joining their team can not even realize the talent, and well experienced worker they have missed out on. It's such a shame how someone that has self taught themselves to the point of having far more experience not only in theory, and lab, but also the broad scope of creating businesses and having your solid work ethic, not even be an option for employers, simply due to lack of academic credentials.
    For all of your accomplishments, designs, etc., most professionals should be able to understand your level of expertise by simply meeting with you, even watching a couple of your RUclips vids!
    Anyways, I have been watching your for years, and always enjoyed the many topics, projects, and rare components you have showed us in the lab! You deserve every bit of recognition and I am so happy to hear about your IEEE induction! Thank you so much for all your great work!

    *Congratu-F-ing-Lations, Fran!*
    I know how hard it can be to be w/o what paper-pushers call "qualifications." *You made the grade*
    I've given seminars to international PhDs in my field and invented things that you can see on google maps or have likely seen while travelling without knowing it. All I ever rated was "associate member" in my professional organization. It can be frustrating to have people not worthy to understand your work be the ones to judge you. I know that. I'm a straight white guy so of course it worked out fine for me in the end. I am so pleased to see *you* gain recognition for your history of work and innovation. It is well deserved. Most people lack the motivation and skill to chart their own path. That hasn't been a roadblock for you.
    Throughout my career (now retired) I was often incensed when attending meetings at my clients where people who 'didn't look like me' we relegated to inferior roles, taking notes, not their place to speak up, etc. For your professional organization to reach out to you in this way warms my heart and gives me hope that the world is really changing. It also speaks very highly of what you have accomplished. I look forward to your future achievements.
    Again, my warmest Congratulations, from the heart.

    You don't have to be university educated to be an engineer. It is a mind set.

  • @trainliker100
    @trainliker100 3 года назад +1

    Academia is certainly not the only way people can learn. I once wrote a paper that was tongue in cheek that college education was perhaps an exceedingly inefficient use of time for the process of learning. That is, unless the goal is to plow through at least four years of bureaucracy proving you can endure some company's bureaucracy. Or if the goal is to keep you out of the job market for at least four years since there may not be enough jobs to go around. Or the goal is to help underscore your financial situation where some students can just write a check to the university and others have to get part time jobs and/or get student loans. For those less than academic goals I suggested a four month university with each week representing one quarter. Tuition and fees would stay the same to keep the financial burdens and the attendant inequities in place. That would also be long enough that you would still have to find housing, find ways to fund, go through all the administrative hassles such as perhaps having trouble transferring credits from a 2 month institution to the 4 month institution. You would still have to go through the hassle of lining up your required courses and electives and stumbling through orientation to find your classrooms and personally show up for at least a day or two each quarter (week). High demand for some courses might put you on a waiting list and result in having to attend an extra week or even a fifth month. You would still have to buy text books, including by professors who require a book they themselves authored. And you can sell your still pristine textbook (obviously, you didn't make annotations in it because you never even opened it) back to the campus bookstore at 50% of what you paid. Everything except actually bothering with any actual course content. Less tedious work for you. Less mundane work for the professors. You might still come out just as "certified for life" as anyone from a four year plan. And given the same facilities and staffing that we have today, twelve times as many students could be grist for the mill. And the schools could make twelve times the money so they should get behind the idea. The only negative might be one twelfth the days and nights available for partying. And at the end of the day, sometimes companies say they have to help somebody "unlearn" what they learned anyway. So it handily solves that problem. Like I said, it was written as a joke - maybe.

      I’ve heard it said that getting your BS is mostly about demonstrating the ability to show up, but damn (as an engineering student) I’d come home to my dorm after an 8am exam and 1-2 lecture classes my roommate (psych major) was just waking up, complaining about having to get to a 1pm class.
