When I was born 62 years ago, my family lived on Chapman. It was a beautiful neighborhood. Lower middle class, but a place filled with people. A community of neighbors and friends. The old apartment buildings were stately and elegant, frozen in time. My grandmother died (of natural causes) in one of those apartments. A widow who had just started receiving Social Security, she was so proud she could have an apartment of her own. It is so hard to see what it has become. My heart aches for the people of East Cleveland. No one wants to live like this. Poverty and drugs and loss of hope have created a world no one knows how to fix. Everyone gave up on them, and they gave up on themselves. Sending love and prayers to all. It's all I can do.

I live in Cleveland those buildings been empty over 20 years no surprise, go over on East 55th. and Luther the old Wilson Middle School has been sitting there since it closed in 2001 empty. This is a common sight all over the city, East 61st, off Ashland same view, different location old empty buildings sitting around 20 years or more, don't forget the westside, same thing just drive down West 65th. between Clark and Storer Ave.

It's almost unbelievable that nobody is going to do anything about these buildings. It looks like some sort of post-apocalyptic scenario. Maybe there's something just a little prophetic about that. The health of any civilization can be assessed by the way its government treats the poor, the infirm, the elderly, and anyone else who doesn't meet their particular expectations of how they think people should look or act.

If this bordered a white neighborhood, you can guarantee these buildings and this area would have been positively dealt with the MOMENT it became abandoned. But since it is in a working- middleclass to low income black area it is NOT high on the local governments priority list! My question is where are the local Activists who should be instrumental in calling their elected officials on the carpet for this egregious oversight and total lack of concern!

Umm Einstein this is a white neighborhood. It was build by whites for whites. the cause is not others with a different skin color. Its depopulation. Maybe if we didn't pay our darker colored beautiful women to murder there babies there would be enough African Americans to keep these building full and maintained. If you don't have at least 3 children then you are part of the problem.
