@@ZippoFanatic77 yea it was very useful and i can understand the struggles that come with trying to make a close up video such as this with a camera set up in between you and the zippo, but it just made me laugh lol

@@ZippoFanatic77 with the new zippos they have started putting a metal shield over top the pin so you cannot remove it anymore. apparently the "loose" part is normal and even ones out of the box come this way now. so i'm not worried about it anymore, as long as it opens

I have always just squeezed the hinges together when it was open (and insert removed), then squeezed the hinges back together side to side, and made adjustments to get it to close straight. Never had to replace a pin.
Thanks for the video man. So I'm pretty sure my hing pin was just too wore out but I did like you said and tried tightening the hinges and ended up cutting and putting the push pin in and seemed to tighten up well enough thanks again. Oh and the zippo I was working on is from 2014.

Hey, great Zippo content you got going on! I just recently got myself a couple, both second hand units, and feel I could use some pointers, if you don't mind the trouble answering. First off, the cases of both have a bit of looseness in their hinges and I _feel_ they could use some tightening. Nothing that serious I think, but definitely looser than your resulting tightened hinge at the end of this vid. With the insert removed and the case held sideways, the non-hinge side of the lid on the first one droops about 1mm to the left and 2mm to the right, and about 1.2mm and 3mm on the second one, respectively. As I haven't handled a brand new Zippo (yet... I feel this might become a collecting rabbit hole :D), I don't have a point of comparison with a fresh hinge. Do you think this amount of sway I got with these cases would warrant a tightening? Secondly, I can't quite seem to figure out how you're getting the hinge pin out of these modern cases with the interally mounted hinge. No matter which position the hinge is, the edge of either or both of the case halves seems to always partially obstruct the hinge end, which would seem to prevent the pin to be pushed out. I haven't used any tools on them yet, to not risk making dumb mistakes that would result in a case needing professional repairs. Of course, I could just try the tightening method you showed in your September 18 2020 video where you simply gave an intact hinge assemly some squeezing with pliers, but this one would seem like a more 'proper' method, as it would appear to better retain the hinge's original form and not risk malforming it. Thanks!
@@ZippoFanatic77 The cases I have are from 2012 and 2018, so are presumably of the newer type. I'll have to have to check out that hinge video of yours. Thanks!
My comment is a bit dated. My mother worked at Zippo during World War II at their original factory in Bradford, PA. She helped make those black matte finished Zippo lighters for the U.S. Army.
Hard squeeze on a needle nose pliers and slipping off will definitely pinch you a painful blood blister. Learned that the hard way a few times over the years
I have the armor zippo and the case overlaps the pin hole so I couldn’t push my pin out but with pliers a small ball peen and the concept from this video I made it work lol now it’s not loose
@@Zippofanatic77outdoors I tried that but it still overlapped the lid on both sides. I’ve had this lighter size 2012 and it was pretty beat up. I think things were bent before lol now that I’ve adjusted I can push the pin out.
Appreciate the videos they’ve been really helpful man. I have a question though - is it not possible to remove the hinge pin from a 1941 replica? I’ve been trying with a thumbtack and even tried hammering it out but no luck.
It's hard to do. My pin just fell out and trying to get it back in I dropped it on the carpet and found it so I got my Leatherman and grabbed it and put it in. 😊 Thumb tack I'll remember.
Should I send my zippo back if it comes with a loose hinge. It’s the 40th anniversary pipe smokers edition and I feel like it should come with tighter tolerances. 🤷♂️
