I have been trying to figure this out for years. it's literally the sound that made me want to make music. hearing the Loop tighten up and then loosen into the melody makes my ears beyond happy
Same here! I remember seeing the music video on tv and seeing them use the teenage engineering op 1 midi keyboard (knew nothing about this back then), but that's my first memory of REAL interest in edm, i really fell in love and slowly started music production myself!
I didn’t think someone could explain what i felt .. started making music at 15 on maschine teaching myself.. and this sound and jack u dj snake ma me start … since stopping last few years this sound and brining it back has been on my mind .. thank you sir
Love this effect. Psytrance producers have been doing this loop effect to their entire mix to speed it up into an insane build for years. Cool to see a more simple tutorial for it :)
@@MountMatze If you have an hour to spare, or even just 5 mins to flick through to a few sections - ruclips.net/video/HS4c4a8OCj4/видео.html&ab_channel=AstrixOfficial An absolute masterclass in all forms of Psytrance.
This effect is very cool, but the lead sound and melody in your own track sounds superb. The contrast from the stuttered effect to the more open and brassy riff works really well.
Please please release that demo as a complete track, that drop made me so happy Also I haven't been this thrilled to watch a producing tutorial for a while, great video!
The harmonics you get when its sped up is a technique used by brostep producers in 2012 to make cool tones without needing an expensive vst like massive. You can then use filters like normal to make pretty awesome bass synths
Almost all the samplers I have don't have any modulator to controll the start or end of the loop range inside the sampler 1. CR8 sampler 2. Sample One of studio one 3. Audio damage quanta granular synth, sampler 4. Tal sampler 5. Initial audio slice !!!!!!! I had to do it manually!
Earliest song I heard this effect in was an Aphex Twin song called bucephalus bouncing ball and always wondered how he did it, after watching this I can confirm I still have no idea how he made that song but I’m defo gonna be using this 🙌🏻
Aphex Twin experimented a lot with his own (as in invented/soldered) kits combined with analogue samples, kind of like a messy homebrew precursor to modern patched synthesizing. He also used algorithmic digital software, like SuperCollider. I think the fact that he often descends more into viewing musical patterns as algorithms instead of a "piano roll" is what makes it quite a bit harder to replicate his style in a DAW, because you kind of need more programming functionality than most DAW automations allow.
There was one video on RUclips about it. From Ralph van Hilst from the Bassjackers. Don't know if anyone else saw it? He seems to have taken a lot of his free content away and has it up on a paid subscription site now. Ralph is the man!
The me of yesterday would have tried making that kick loop shorter and shorter and then been like "Whelp, guess Swedish House Mafia just defied the laws of physics and audio" and given up X3 Thanks for showing us the trick with the re-pitching!
They don't allow us in Logic Pro to turn and tweak directly on the loop end button itself like in Ableton ! But Big Z tricked them with a workaround ! Well done !
I did a remake of One when it first came out and the way i did it in Ableton, i didn't have to pitchbend as the loop will get shorter smoothly in ableton as opposed to in Logic (Which is weird since that's what i think they made the track on). One problem i ran into however, was how to hit the note perfectly? I solved it by first just checking with a tuner that the loop in the sampler is in key when played statically, moving the loop point by 0.1 back and forth until i found the exact right sweet spot. I then made the automation "backwards" when i know what my target is. This way i could actually play the melody with the sampler itself without having to bounce audio (which is nice if you want to get back to the original kick samlple at some point). Very simple! we've had issues with logic looping effects for ages, not sure why it's so janky compared to Ableton.
"It's only magic when you don't know how it's done" 🙂 Always wondered about this - never heard that SHM track but I heard something similar years ago and always wondered how it was done. Great stuff. Thanks.
I guess, the quantization of the pitches at around 5:45 is due to the limited resolution (of 128 values) of of the mod-wheel midi-controller? Or is it because the loop-end is rounded to the closest integer in the sample-playback engine? ...but I think, the latter would lead to a much finer quantization of the pitches so it's probably the former.
I did this in fl studio with even better effect, before he uploaded it. Today I uploaded remake of one but radio edit version, I also made original mix aswell.
I’m really enjoying these style of videos from Big Z. Super dense chunks of knowledge presented with a bow. One of the few channels I might actually turn notifications on for 👍
OMG...OMG....I WAS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO DO THAT IN LOGIC FOR SO MANY TIME...THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!! THIS IS A PIONEER CDJ LOOP CUT EFFECT ITS AMAZING.....
tbh theres no one on the internet that teach you easy tips and stuff better then big z. maybe Virtual riot but all the others just click bait you. You got my props
A little asymmetry between your future bass type track and the Swedish house mafia iteration is that the actual sample of the synth comes from the repetition effect itself
I been trying to make that effect on logic. On live the sampler is more upfront with it, just turn the freq knob. The sampler in logic is a bit more confusing but its my main daw. You gave me an idea tho, helps a lot. Thanks
