Travis Orbin - Sky Eats Airplane - "Sound of Symmetry"

  • The title track off of our EP is a pretty disparate blend of heaviness and hooks. Out of the three tunes that we cut, I had the biggest impact--musically--on this one in particular. Some of the edits look a little jerky because we ended up removing a few figures after tracking.
    Notes:
    0:14 - 0:24, 1:08 - 1:09, 1:20 - 1:32, 2:11 - 2:17 -- Cymbals complement guitar
    3:04 - 3:07 -- 3-16 metric modulation
    3:41 - 3:44 -- Sixteenth-note displacement

    Travis, please for the sake of your SEA fans, release another song or two. You have no idea how bad I wanted Sound of Symmetry to be released as a full-length. If not then that sucks for me. Keep on rockin' man. You've got my support 100%.

    0:59 to 1:19 is pure bliss. Love the rest of the song too but that part in particular makes me rewind it at least ten times before moving on, haha

    Brilliant playing and tones.. I must say, listening to the album I realize how much more of a dynamic change the extra hat brings. Just the way you position the cymbals makes the mix sound much wider

    @hiney1 No that's the song that he's playing to. If you've ever listened to SEA, which I'm sure you have after watching this and being curious of you hadn't, that SEA uses synth beats in there songs. Kinda like...ummm...well, beats they made on a computer is the best way to explain it.

    There will always be arguments on videos like these over who is the best drummer in the world, who created what style, blah blah blah. The fact is, personally, there is no drummer I would rather WATCH drum then Travis Orbin. Ashit load of control backed up by regimented technique. It's just great to see.

    @cgarcia612 well yea he obviously has two. I just didn't pay enough attention to see that when the camera went to a different take at that point in the video just the right hi-hat moved a few inches forward. I just thought the whole camera moved like an inch cause I wasn't paying enough attention to see what really happened.

    This may seem like an odd question, but is there any type of show you prefer to play in? I've always played barefoot, but i feel like that takes its toll on my feet and i have to play harder. I haven't found a shoe yet that allows enough movement and with light enough weight. any suggestions?

    Travis, I noticed on the Truth website that you're using a 16"x13" floor tom. Why did you go with that size and would you recommend it over a more traditional size (16"x16", 14"x14", etc.)? This song is great and you are a fantastic musician. Keep up the killer work!

    @rhythmkeeper009 there are a couple really odd mics lying about. theres a spot mic sm81? on the china which is always plenty loud. the LDC on the ride makes sense, even if the ride is in a weird place. maybe in such a small room, the best spot for a room mic is there? i normally use a ribbon turned 90 degrees about 10 ft in front of the kit. theres not 10 ft in this iso booth.

    So this might sound kind of dumb, but what is a random SM7 doing sitting behind the kit at the level of the kick? Being a dynamic mic, I wouldn't think it'd work too well as a room mic, and it's kind of on the wrong side to do much for the kick.

    It isn't the old singer was Jerry Roush and before that was Brack something. The new singer(s) are Elliot Coleman, also of Of Man Not Of Machine, and Bryan Zimmerman (Screamer).
    Elliot Coleman has an awesome voice. Bryan is gonna take some getting used too (screaming-wise) his cleans are nice though.

  • @thejourneyofjake
    @thejourneyofjake 13 лет назад

    @theyhavepeabrains *sigh* that's twice u've completely misunderstood me. "I also didn't say Travis was playing them"..where did that come from? I asked 2 questions in the beginning, midi hihats? triggers? u answered the 2nd question perfectly, thankyou. no triggers for the synth hihats. my 1st question clearly(obviously not clear enough for you) assumed i knew what MIDI instruments are. 99% of your response was a layman explanation of something i clearly already knew, hence, quite entertaining

  • @markpopkie
    @markpopkie 14 лет назад

    everyone seems bummed about the lack of cymbals in the mix... but this sounds like the final ALBUM MIX, not a dedicated drum mix. it would sound weird if his cymbals were more present in the final mix... but maybe Travis or Taylor could put together an edit of this video with the drums forward and the final mix in the background so we could hear more of the detail in the performance...

  • @BrokenArrowSnare
    @BrokenArrowSnare 14 лет назад

    Travis, I would like to know what drum heads you use. I need new ones very badly, and i'm still not positive on what I like. The percussion instuctor at my school is endorsed by Evans and he said Evans Generic 2 coated or REMO penstripe. I'd just like another opinion from someone that is specifically from this type of music.

  • @sink009
    @sink009 13 лет назад

    @shaftninja Even though I know this is kind of a late replay, I've been researching mono crush mic's, and how all of that's set-up, and I was wondering, what pre-amp/compressor/etc. is it running through.
    Reason I'm asking is because I've got an SM7 lying around that I use for recording dirty vocals, but if I can find out a way to use it on my kit to make everything sound better, that'd be awesome.
