2 thoughts. One, if you're not a believer you can come away from a bible reading without any understanding of the writing. Two, if you are looking at a particular event with modern eyes, with no understanding of the lifestyle and beliefs of that time, you can trouble understanding. And, without benefit of the Holy Spirit, you are at a disadvantage to understand. But, as a question, was the Bible written for unbelievers to understand, without benefit of guidance from someone with belief and understanding (if I worded that right)?
