- No turbo, no traction control, no tricky diffs, just pure driving pleasure. That was the thinking behind the car Colin McRae dreamed up, then built. In a rare insight into one of rallying’s coolest cars ever made, Jimmy McRae shows DirtFish around this incredible build.

*Would you drive the McRae R4?*
Of course. It looks absolutely beautiful.
Stop asking and give me the keys already
I will drive and use it stage rally too!
Yes
Bring it back to dirt games even wrc
I feel like the world doesn't appreciate how good this entire family is/was. Hoping their new generation McRae can get up to the top too.
Absolutely. Alister was quite the hand too
Max McRae is on his way up right now!
But cheers to those of us who do. 👊🏽

This car deserves a lot more attention. Doesn't matter if it's through video games, simulators, social media or movies. Enthusiasts and fans alike need to experience this excellence on wheels.
100% agree with you!
Yes
@@neblolthecarnerd2024 this car still is very underrated.
We just did a whole championship in this car in EA WRC. It was a ton of fun.
I just leaned of it form the new wrc game. It’s a beast.
This car was a beast in Dirt 2 ... and i felt in love the first time i saw it.
Especially the x games rallycross variant. Beast of a car tbf
@@CTHULUHOOPERthe Rallycross variant of McRae R4 has 650bhp.
R. I. P Colin one of the greatest drivers of all time
The genius of Colin. He imagined the R5 category before it existed. He even found the name right!
it was made to homgulate to rally standards at the time wrc if i remember right
2028 we could probably see the actual McRae R5.
The fact that no one has made any moves to produce more of these still bothers me to this day
With you on that
@Darth Ruin Why? Jealous?
@Darth Ruin since when was that relevant to anything?
Maybe because they look like shit
Maybe want to take a peep at the GR Yaris then.
Like many Colin was my boyhood idol. Even now as a middle aged man I still miss him terribly, like all of his fans do.
I remembered this iconic 2007 McRae R4 car from Colin McRae DiRT and EA SPORTS WRC. That car is one of the most OP cars in both DiRT (2007) and EA SPORTS WRC.
Jimmy is my hero. A plumber who could drive anything FAST. His battles with brooks in the manta 400s were superb
He is a true legend!
@@DirtFish 100% ✅👍
Filmed on the only day of the year that its not pissing it down at Knockhill, you boys done well to manage this :-)
Absolute weapon of a car!
Always a massive fan of Jimmy McRae. I lived in Sedgefield and delivered papers to the industrial estate, on that estate was Andrews Heat For hire and one Saturday morning there was his HSR Chevette. I asked if i could sit in it and they let me! Went back later in the day and got given some posters and playing cards, unfortunately we missed Jimmy but from that day on the Chevette was my favourite car.
Jimmy and Colin both rallying superstars!
Grew up in Scotland watching Jimmy and then Alistair and Colin, fantastic rally drivers and great ambassadors for rallying in Scotland.
How old Alistair McRae is in 2024 btw?
This car should have its own racing series for young and upcoming drivers. The R4 Series has a nice ring to it.
Colin was one of the good guys. R.I.P sir.
there actually is a rally spec called r4. it used to be group n, then group 4, then NR4, and now r4 i believe. production-based cars.
Jimmy, sideways in a Sierra, in Wales, on a freezing cold November morning, in the pouring rain........ah, happy days.
Always great to see Jimmy Mac, last time I saw him he was sitting in his Cosworth there at Knockhill during a Scottish. The whole family are legends up here!
As a Colin McRae fan and have grown up playing the Colin McRae rally/dirt games, i will say that it’s a shame this car never went into production, if Colin McRae avoided his helicopter crash back in 2007 (even thought he was the pilot) this car would have made it into production, and if so, it would have gone into production around November 2007 and would have gotten a next generation around 2015, then 2020/21 a third generation would have been released but would have come in electric or hybrid versions aswell but of course petrol being the primary option for the car (even though coronavirus would have had an effect and would have delayed production) and another thing if Colin McRae were still alive today I wonder what other car ideas he would have made, I know I’m going slightly over the top here but just saying as a what if incase anyone puts any negative comments on this
R.I.P Colin McRae (1968-2007) Best rally driver of all time
Wtf makes you think it would ever go into production let alone that fast?? How old are you btw? 😕
What if
I'll never forget the test that i organised for Colin in July 2007 at Forrest Estate Dalry when he did back to back test with R4 and his old Metro 6R4 and was 2 seconds a mile quicker in the new car straight out of the box . Such a shame it had so much potential
Such a shame we never saw its potential in great hands RIP Colin
We did once! But it would have been amazing to see it more.
Certainly a case of 'If only...'
Thanks DirtFish for another great video!
Sad to see this car just stored in a barn. It needs to be used more times: Goodwood, Rally Legend, Eifel Rallye, etc. A lot of different options. What better way to keep Colin alive than to have his car entered in different rally events.
It’s difficult when it’s the only one. Parts are hard to come by.
@@DirtFish It's understandable. But it surely deserves to be on the stages. Just happy to see it again though.
@@DirtFish worst excuse ever. License the plans to a company. Like the million rally companies in england. To build a set number of chassis for circulation. Mcrae family get licensing and copy and ip rights. There is no reason this shouldnt be literally british country sides at events
I'd like to see it on the hillclimb circuit.
@@km6832 it's no excuse it was colins vision and if his family want it to be kept in the family then let them they lost a lot that day so don't be a dick just enjoy the content and appreciate the car for what we see of it, like they've said these parts are hard to come by and to mass produce this car would be shitting on colins name period plus with how today is if other people got there hands on this it wouldn't be what it is, it would be changed in every way possible then how much of colins vision would be left.....
Never thought we'd see it again ❤
Hopefully we can see it more!
If i made a list of things that I didn’t expect to pop up in my suggested this would be at the top of the list.
"If in doubt flat out "
🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Never even heard of it before. Very cool.
This never got enough coverage at the time and was unaware of it's 'budget' aspirations; knowing that, wonder if it might have been more successful if it were a platform for a silhouette class - might have tempted mfr participation via reduced development costs
Ta for this: nice to see & hear it in action, especially @ Knockhill - a circuit both epic & bijou at the same time...
You were NO slouch yourself McRae Senior.
You can say that again!
I wish someone would build this great car!
WHEN MAN AND MACHINE BECOME ONE
WE GOT COLIN MCRAY
It looks and sounds amazing.
When a child dies a parent never gets over it. The good ones go early. God has a place for them. ❤️👍❤️
I was actually wondering what happened to that car just this week. Such a waste.
Lovely wee vid. My favourite motorsport family and by far my favourite circuit too!
I've missed it terribly this year. Hopefully I can drive the 10 miles down the road to spectate the btcc next year :(
We’re happy to say that the car is still in the family!
@@DirtFish Haha! Yup, and so nice to see Jimmy geeing it a wee bit o' laldy as well ;)
Colin never died. He was reborn
Awsome car. Glad to see old Jimmy at the wheel? What's the name of this track?
FOREVER MCRAE 💎
If this was made into a purchasable kit car... Goooood lord would people love it
If only this was a thing. It could have been the caterham of rallying.
Does anyone know what the electronics were? I can see that the dash is a Race Technology unit, but I’m wondering if they also chose to use a UK based brand for the other electronic? Pectel or Life Racing maybe?
I have two 1:43 scale diecast models of this car 🚙 and my only wish was to see Mr Colin McRae drive at the rally day event at the Castle Coombe race track that’s held every year in September, both Colin and Mr Richard Burns are sadly missed in the world of Rally sport, God bless them for what they have done for the sport in the United Kingdom and the World and Colins R4 car what a Great 👍 piece of kit it is.
The Legend will live for every.
we need this in the new rally games
Where was this filmed? knockhill?
Such a tragedy, he was 100% THE best ever rally driver in my opinion most exciting to watch and natural talent, he had a sixth sense you watch him compared to other top rally drivers and he's just got that extra skill and ability in spades puts him above everyone else. He is the driver that got me watching rallying properly and I also often wonder if he'd tried his hand at formula 1 given his RIDICULOUSLY Quick reactions and feel for the cars and ability wonder whether he could have made it as a top formula 1 driver aswell?
Guess we will never know now, but what a legacy to leave of great footage and fact he's still spoken about and held in the highest esteem! Top bloke!
Checkout DJM motorsport, for full story! On this car, based in Boughton ,Notts.
So is it being made? Is it for sale? Can i buy the plans to make one in a shed? Good show case but give nothing on what the plan is with the car
i tought this car was fictional when i saw it first time at colin mcrae dirt 2..
that thing should still be built it be the Clubman up and coming star against the R5 class
I would love to drive this for real
Wouldn’t we all!
I no it’s not really a comparison but Bob Henderson but the Scottish Argyll GT Turbo back in the late 70s early 80s with very some more thoughts something fast and good that is affordable I have a lot of respect for these people and putting their ideas into practice very good video thanks much for Sharing
Nice to see Knockhill, a rarity.
Just in case the current WRC class dies, this car should be the base model or even appears as the one-make series in the junior cup, even the world championship if possible. Such a shame that this car only exists as a show and test car to this day, in honor of Mr. Mcrae, this car should be in any way raced as it was supposed to!
Hmmm, would i drive the
R4 ? God damn straight i'd
Drive it. It looks and sounds
Really cool. And bloody rare i
Would think. It was a great car
To drive (virtually) on dirt 2.
A piece of history now. What
A loss. ❤
Reminds me of Andy Burtons Peugeot rally car.
TOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH EMOTIONS //////////////////////////////// GODBLESS COLIN MCRAE//////////////
If only we could have seen him drive it *today*
He drove it at Goodwood in 2007.
And if I remember correctly in Duke's tribute programme to Colin, you do go on onboard through Goodwood with Colin in this car during the main feature
Nice smart
I could see this in with the r5s etc around the world tbh sad hes gone.
This looks like if TVR had a hatch racecar
I want to see this been driven off road!
What age is Jimmy now
Here before this blows up
Tell your friends😏
Looks like a Ford Ka that had sex with a TVR Tuscan xD
I wish it was easier to get into this kind of sport. And not based on how rich, famous you are, or who you know in the industry that will get you a "free" pass.
Cool car ;)
Clan McRae! Fortudine
is there a specific purpose to the headlights being so small and centered? aesthetic is subjective and i'm sure the car built on colin's concept is great, but the stock looks like some way oversized aftermarket bolt on to a tiny car, im curious if there's a specific reason for that
❤️🙏❤️
What an awesome car. Road legal?
Wasnt there a rally raid version? Or atleast a planned one? Im not sure
I remember that Colins brother Alister helped develop it. There is some info on the car at: www.mcrae-enduro.com/
Is that a ford KA?
Wish codies actually made this car for Dirt Rally 2.0 (or its successors)
I think it's very sad that Colin didn't get the chance to finish this car cos to my understanding the mcrae r4 was a project that Colin was working on and it's also a car he was building and it's so sad he never got chance to finish his project when it could have been so much more and there's no doubt that Colin would have made so much more and most likely have field with it until he'd got the most out of it
This the reason y they killed colin...he built the rally car the public can get there hands on.. genius. RIP
Dort Foosh
Not one word about the the company that actually designed and built the car.. DJM RACE PREPARATION your welcome..
isn't that the way of the world now, thanks for your comment ( its us DJM)
ford ka on steroids :)
Still better English than Harry Kane.
What did he say?
But does it have wifi?
Front looks like a spider
Wouldn't it be awesome if a billionaire put some money into creating a Colin McRae series that used this car as its platform. Would be fitting for such a legend.
The car design looks like a vw beetle on steroids.
Surprised dirt fish doesn't market to a more broad range of enthusiasts. With hundred's of acres of land and still thinking small. I got idea's.
Its much the same car as a Darrian T9 GTR but with 4 wheel drive
looks like a VW beetle with its nose crushed in a vice
RIP, gone before his time
is so cool to be able to build your dreams and do it. congratulations to Mcrae. The car is not beautiful, but is cool as f$32ck!
HOW COME THIS IS NOT IN FORZA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fiat Multipla "R-Type"? XD
ffs you guys couldnt cut in a shot of the back end?
3:44.....
@@jamespacker2364 hate to break it to you bud, but 2-seconds isn't a long time......
@@koolerthanapolarbear you asked for a shot- not a freakin movie champ..
Wait you can actually buy a McRae R4 ?! It's not just a one off concept build?
Looks suspiciously like a ford puma
the base chassis is actually from a mk1 ford ka :)
dirt fish??? on tarmac the entire video???
The front is horrible i rarely say this about any motor but... The front end looks shite.
Reminds me of a smart roadster.. 😕
10cmvasf
Lol 29 sainz fans didnt like this
Who made dirtfish cause everyone who works there deserves 10 billion pounds each
:)
they really need to translate this into english
Why not go electric with it? Not with the original car, obviously. Sure it would be a nice platform for that.
*what is this? a volkswagon Beetle and a Mclaren got a baby? it looks horrible.*
Unfortunately that is a very important thing when getting rich people to part with their cash. Form follows function, how is it possible to make it so ugly?
Not a styling genius
