Myth busters did it
Tom Clarke I’m not Joe stacks, but I have the same truck. Air comes off the cab and hits the thicc (lol) tailgate and smooths out air creating low pressure in the bed and preventing turbulence. This makes the truck more efficient. Tailgate down means air turbulence and more waste at speed. Next time you look at a modern pickup tailgate, you’ll notice it’s thicker in the middle and has a little lip on the edge. It’s for aerodynamics.

With the tailgate in the upper position, air is "trapped" in the bed, lessening the space the air flowing over the truck can occupy after the cab, leading to a lower pressure differential between afer the cab and in front of the windshield, decreasing drag.
