      I think this is to early to call, we went to a Monday 3:00 show thinking we'd have the theater to ourselves and it was PACKED.
      The movie was just epic in visuals. Those aliens looked alien, not like Star Trek who adds a bit of play-doe to faces and calls it a new race. Story was solid, easy enough to follow. "Tech-Talk" was at a minimum, no soft spots of dead air with zero going on, a constant ride of fun.

      Is the whole trajectory of a film is predicted in the first weekend's sales? If the subject matter of the film is not well known, it sounds like something that would require a word of mouth growth after the first few batches of viewers saw it.

    The main reason this movie flopped is because no one knew it was even out. The promo wasn't strong at all. In order for a movie to succeed at the box office, people have to know it is out. Wether its good or bad, you have to get people out to spend their money on it.
    They should have waited till the holidays to release it. It was visually stunning with a great storyline. I enjoyed it.

      the way trailers work needs to change- spectical no longer sells movies. I canl't talk for others but i ignore all the in your face action trailers, at this point with CGI seeing a whole bunch of action does not make me want to watch a movie, however some of the funny diologe and interesting set ups would have peaked my interest.

      i knew it was out but i cant stand the lead male, but have seen it anyways, i think it focus to much on wow factors and combat and to little on telling a good story, movies do seem to tend to wanna show of that they got the biggest explosions and fast combat or heavy use of CGI, for me i was let down i had hoped for a great sci-fi story that could have had multiple films following it, but right now not in a million years.

      What pisses me off is that the fucking suits how run the marketing where just using raw data and what those other big movies were doing and didn't try to show that valarien was different. When I first saw the trailers I thought it was a rip off of guardians of the galaxy

      That is because it had great dialog, a interesting story, and good acting. Valerian was all visual with 0 substance, also boring.

      @23GreyFox • there are tons of movies made from books no one has ever read or heard of, but if the movie is good then it doesn’t matter. You didn’t need to know the comics to enjoy the sci-fi space adventure that Valerian was.

    The emptiness and mystery in the trailer was actually what drew me to this movie. Same with a friend of mine. I’m soooo sick of trailers spoiling the entire movie in seconds. I saw trailers for Valerian, and was like ‘I have no idea what it’s about but it looks fun. I gotta see it!’ And I wasn’t disappointed, very fun movie.

      @tommy aronson Ha...ha...ha... We are different. This movie is great. If You don't like it, You are free not to. But let people like it. The movie has an amazing world to explore, and while probably many people don't feel the "chemistry" between the main characters, I did and I liked their performance. Humans are so different from eachother. It doesn't have to be "cliche" smooch smooch chemistry. I hope more going to appriciate this movie later.

    • @valkhii
      @valkhii 4 года назад +15

      @tommy aronson Nothing new? Why would it need to have any "new" to begin with? But it does have a lot of new things. A beautiful new world with interesting creatures and technology. The CGI is so good that You are being completely drawn into the story. You never doubt that the creature on screen is actually there. That's a huge thing! You just try to find flaws in a story that isn't asking for special treatment. Maybe that's the issue. So let the people who likes this movie, like it and we also let You not like it.

      I just watched this movie. It was horrible and a complete waste of time. It was poorly acted, written and extremely predictable. The only positive thing i can say is the amount of CGI must have taken a large amount of time and effort. But CGI doesn’t make up for the acting or a puerile script.

    I already knew it was gonna flop. Unknown source material compounded with a gigantic budget, "actors" who were hired for their names instead of their skill, this movie was destined to fail. It was basically another jupiter ascending.

    • @DrOtto
      @DrOtto 7 лет назад +26

      'Unknown source material' is a concerning statement. Basically what this says is that if its not already an established IP, there's no room for it in Hollywood...and that, my friends, means that the death of film is already well underway.

    • @dai2dai246
      @dai2dai246 7 лет назад +12

      Yes. Here in France it is extremely known material, and the movie is getting disappointing reviews because of the mishmash of 3 comics into 1 film.
      Who told you the movie industry was going anywhere anyway?

    • @TeenDream888
      @TeenDream888 7 лет назад +1

      Daka Shoes and the main leads looked and acted nothing like their comic book counterparts. not saying it has to be exact, but when you don't ensure some details are similar, you lose the fan base, which means almost all your overseas/European viewers.

    • @SinerAthin
      @SinerAthin 7 лет назад +4

      I'm not sure if "gigantic budget" is really an indicator that something is going to fail. If anything it should be the opposite.
      Generally, a bigger budget helps the movie.
      Of course, a big budget it can't save it from a shit script, bad acting or uninteresting plot, but more money is never a bad thing.

    • @johncrews7750
      @johncrews7750 7 лет назад +7

      I think that he means a large budget equates to a larger potential deficit. Obviously, the more money that is spent on a something, the more money you need to make in order to at least break even. Also, all these problems are listened together, because together they create the failure, not separately. So a big budget, with unknown source material, is a the main problem; a toxic combination with bad acting and writing.
      Finally, more money can definitely be a bad thing - hence the phrase "more money is more problems", and the plethora of lottery winners who have lost their fortunes or commit suicide.

  • @mrjones422
    @mrjones422 7 лет назад +850

    The biggest problem with this whole movie was the dynamic between the two leading actors. If you kept the girl but had an older more established male actor you could of had The 5th Element II.
    With both of these young actors the movie felt like a spy kids movie in space. It just felt like underage kids pretending to be international agents.

    Yeah... I watched the movie. The visuals were really stunning, but I do think Cara was miscast. She was so boring to watch. There was hardly any subtlety or nuances in her acting - she's very wooden. I get she's supposed to be this badass chick, but there's no warmth to her, which makes it hard to like or connect with her character. The chemistry between the two lead characters was just barely believable, and that was entirely due to Dane DeHaan.

    • @DarthKraytofKansas
      @DarthKraytofKansas 7 лет назад +13

      But she wasn't even a "badass chick". She was like an 18 year old high-school grad throwing a tantrum through most of it. I just got "immature" vibes most of the way through. And the way they portrayed her as so easily manipulated by Valarian, I thought was disturbing. He was a selfish, womanizing douchebag.

    Actually I enjoyed the movie very much and I never followed the comic book, it was a great story that required a person to follow the story and pay attention. Unfortunately we live in a time where most people need to be spoon fed and have a lower attention rate than in the past. It was great to me and it's sad some didnt like it, I thought the main actors did a great job. Hope it did better in France than here in America. Looking forward to the sequel.

    Now if the movie is a commercial flop worldwide, remember the "fifth element" was also a commercial flop and it became a cult movie for science-fiction fans.

    • @LikeABoss464
      @LikeABoss464 7 лет назад +4

      The problem is that the US is by far the most important market for Sci Fi productions. When the film has a budget of 180 million, it usually means that it needs to make minimum around 400 million for a profit. For example in France where Valerian is far more well known, it opened to around 4 million on its first day which is impressive but won't be able to compensate for lost sales in the US. The biggest markets yet to open are the U.K, South Korea, Russia, Mexico, Brazil and finally China which will be make or break for the movie. For example, in my country Australia, the movie is opening in 2 weeks but there really hasn't been a lot of marketing for a movie with such a budget. To put this into context, Valerians main competitor is Dunkirk which features an all European cast and focuses on an event that took place in France, yet the US market is still responsible for well over half of the total gross. Flopping in the US isn't a death sentence but it's certainly a warning sign.

    • @NetAndyCz
      @NetAndyCz 7 лет назад +3

      Yeah it is based on French comic which is not well known in US (they have too many of their own comics). I have not seen the movie yet but Luc Besson is capable of making really great movies, so I plan to go. I think the trailer did not help much, it looks like Spy Kids with more CGI:) However the story seemed to go bit deeper than that, I am pretty sure the movie will be more successful after it is released on Blu-ray and DVDs. Fifth Element was one of those films I could see more times that became better when I noticed all the small details they paid attention to.

      Tess DEPRET the story doesn't need to be changed, it's more how you adapt it from book to screen, which isn't a very easy task I'll admit. The story from the book might be too long, so you have to find a way to shorten it, you may have to cut out certain parts, and the writer might want to take make their own creative changes to the script. This process isn't easy, but it's possible to make at least a decent film, and this movie unfortunately did a terrible job of adapting it

    I caught this on Netflix a few days ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the visuals and photography were great especially the opening scenes. I also loved the aliens called The Pearls, and thought if they'd had more screen time (like Avatar), the film could have had more of an impact. The two leading characters were not too bad. Cara Delevigne definitely shone in my opinion. I'd give it 3.5/5.

  • @autarchprinceps
    @autarchprinceps 7 лет назад +354

    Well as someone who has seen the movie, I must disagree with some of your points. Marketing the visuals was what got me to go see the movie and that was a good thing, because visuals and background world / universe are really the strong points, with story and main actors falling flat on their face. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but suffice it to say, that the main villain is unoriginal to the extrem and the heroes, Valerian in particular, are just annoying. The visuals on the other hand were so good, that it was still a decent movie overall in my book.
    If they had marketed the story or characters more, I might not have gone to see it, because there is nothing to market there. Visuals are the only reason to see this movie, so that is also what needs to convince you, or you might as well not go.

      I like the actor who played Valerian (Dane DeHaan) from Chronicles, and I think he played this part very well as well. That his character was annoying, well, his personality is based on the comics'. Cara Delavigne (or however you spell it) was so out of space though. I agree on the story part, was blunt and predictable.

      Obviously everyone is different, but I 100% agreed with the point about the trailers. I'm someone who does enjoy comic-based movies, but really needs to be "sold" by the trailers to actually be driven to see them. I was more bugged by the trailers I was spammed with here on youtube. They were nothing but "HEY LOOK AT HOW MUCH CGI AND ACTION SEQUENCES WE PACKED THIS MOVIE WITH". I want plot first and foremost and the trailers gave me the impression that this movie was going to be just a bunch of empty graphics (whether that was actually true or not).

    This movie was great! Some of the best graphics I've seen. The main characters were a bit off putting in their acting, but I think it actually made it more interesting. Rihanna's dance scene was mesmerizing to watch! It's a shame she died because if they make a second film, she could've had a bigger role which I think would have drawn in more fans. Anybody who says this movie wasn't good, is not a true fan of Sci-Fi!!!

      An independently financed French film, albeit the most expensive French film of all time, would have an impossible time prying Pratt from his Disney contract and Gadot from her Warners one. Pratt was the fat guy from Parks & Rec and Gadot was a former model and Miss Israel without many more credits than Delevingne before they blew up in their superhero roles. Also, don't forget Passengers starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence had a $14 mil opening weekend.

    You can't have a kid who looks like he's 15 acting like the old and tired badass who's seen too much, fought too many battles, and loved too many women. "A soldier" who's the best of the best? The script sounds like it was written for Korben Dallas (or Bruce Willis...or John McLane). This needed a tough guy 'take no shit actor' like Gerard Butler, Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson - or on the cheap, literally ANY actor over 40 who could pull off a badass. But no. They cast some 18(?) year old who looks like he belongs in Spy Kids and my suspension of disbelief is out the window.

    I watched the movie. Wasn't that bad. The story was solid, I particularly liked the pearl species and their part in the movie, and even the rest of the military were solid roles even if the bad guy's performance was a little cringy. The main actor was my main issue to be honest. He just didn't match the character at all. He was like a teenager, but Valerian is supposed to be a soldier, and most importantly a likeable guy, and his performance made him annoying, unprofesional and sloppy at his job. Even Kara who is not a magnificent actor did better than him, but she was given really weird scenes when one moment she is badass and cool and the next she is just a useless girl that has to be rescued or just be there for a bad joke. Overall the movie is not bad, but not great either.

      Asha Nimo I didn't say he *looked* like a teenager didn't I? No, I didn't. I said he "was like a teenager," implying similarity. It doesn't matter how old the actor is, his behavior was one of a teenage boy, that's what I meant. And, ok, maybe teenagers can be soldiers (great nations with millions of millions of people, aliens and money obviously have to use teenagers as soldiers. They are obviously the best option. Who needs experience and maturity? Pff it's not like the only nations using child soldiers are the ones that actually lack people to be soldiers...), but rationally speaking, the whole world they portrayed in the movie is not supposed to be ok with young soldiers. Moreover, he is supposed to be a Mayor, that's a pretty high rank that demands professionalism, seriousness and overall experience. That's why he doesn't work for the roll. He is careless, unprofessional, he doesn't follow orders and he put's his crew at risk. Also, I still think he was unlikeble as a character. So there's that.
      Ps: your two comments contradicted each other. Either you didn't see him as a teenager, but a mature soldier, or you saw him as a teenager soldier and you are ok with that. So you are arguing for nothing...

I'd switch out the main male hero Valerian with someone else though he wasn't interesting at all. It felt like he was supposed to be one of those cool player jock types, but he didn't look like one or made me feel like he was one, he just pretended to be serious and cool with a few jokes here n there. Didn't make the audience feel like he was worthy of the girl at all. He just looks and sounds like a perv to me.

      That's because Valerian is supposed to be in his rather late 30s when the plot of the movie happens, while Laureline is in her mid 20s... those that don't know the comics don't know the backstory to those two (some years before the movie, Valérian - aleady an established time-space agent at the time - decided to bring her back to the 28th century after a mission he did in the France of the year 1000, when she was 16. He used advanced memory implants to put her up to date with his modern world, and she was then integrated in the Service as his underling).

    Maybe it's just me, but I think that a big reason Valerian flopped was because of Cara. I think that she is a somewhat capable actor, however I think she's just so incredibly dry. Her emotions seem...basic. Boring. She never conveys more than she has to, making it hard for the audience to connect to her and for her to have chemistry with her fellow actors. With a movie that seemed to depend on her stardom to gain a better following, just seeing her in every single trailer told me that this was going to be almost monotonous and uninteresting. In reality, aside from the two lead actors, the film was alright, and especially visually stunning. However, it was clearly mis-cast. Using such unfit actors in so much advertising was likely a big reason why the movie failed.

    I genuinely loved this movie and after the fifth element in his back catalogue alone I was guaranteed to put my cash up for tickets. My son loved it too. I even got the blu ray and I genuinely feel it was a refreshing movie among all the superhero flicks and remakes of that summer. I was really hopeful it would do well as it was originally going to be a trilogy or more, hopefully Mr Besson gets back to it at some point as I'd love to see how it continues and ends properly and I know my son would be up for it too. I love Bessons work in general but I wouldn't say I'm a fanboy as such, hes just a really bloomin good film maker and I respect the guy. P.s. anxez,
      I have to agree. I was surprised that Cara's Laureline was maybe the best part of the movie and almost the only character with a soul in it. In the movie she was the one who actually expressed emotion where as DeHaan's Valerian came of as a smug bore. The reviews speak of the leads not having chemistry on-screen and while Cara may not be the best actress in the world or even anywhere close to that, it wasn't her fault that the chemistry wasn't there. I put most of the blame on DeHaan who I felt was terribly miscast as Valerian to begin with. He has too much of a baby face to be "a major" in any army or anything. It felt like Laureline was thrown together with Valerian Jr. or something.

      It's a cool movie, based on a French Space Opera from 1969 (my very young youth and I loved it). At least for the visuals and complexity of the canvas it's worth it. It would make for a good Space Opera RPG Video Game.

      McFunnyPantz I currently want to see Valerian but each time I see those two actors looking and acting like angsty-teenagers on screen I question whether I really want to spend the 11 dollars required to watch that.
      The aliens all look pretty disturbing but the visuals look great. Artistic wise, creature designs can either be relate-able (and lovable) or they can be edgy (and forgettable) but never both. So I'm not sure I want to see a movie with angsty teen heroes and forgettable aliens that all resemble an old man's left testicle after it's been beaten with a hammer.
      Okay so I'm a critic, but...
      I'm still open to being convinced to see the movie. What are your favorite aspects of the movie?

    I liked Valerien. It had a unique storyline. I really appreciated that the movie didn't focus on the romance, but rather on the struggle of a species to regain their home. Valerian was a refreshing treat from the rinse and repeat action flicks that just keep coming out.

      Lots of stuff happened, but nothing really happened.
      A jellyfish that can kinda see the future or whatever of a person... what?
      Spend 10 minutes looking at a dancer when your partner is hostage... what?
      The dancer dying after 10 minutes and we are supposed to care... what?
      Killing random primitive aliens, especially the fisherman who was trying to feed his kids... what?
      How much is 100Kajjigger? Is it a lot? It sounded a lot... what?
      Acting lol... what?
      Magically tie up the General when the ship leaves... what?
      Most of these were visually stunning, but they were empty as fuck.
      Only good part was the first 5-10 minutes where they introduced all the different aliens.

    Don't count Valerian out, yet, Looper Viewers. I saw it today in spite of Looper's comments. I have never seen a Valerian graphic story; so, the characters were completely unknown to me. I thought the characters were well developed, interesting and engaging. V and L were believable heroes and believable romantic interests. Clive Owen was a believable villain. Ethan Hawke was a believable nightclub-owning lowlife. And Rihanna...Rihanna was believably the greatest performing artist in The Universe! The action was fast-paced. I was never bored (not true for me in Spider-Man). The visuals were SUPERB.
    I would give it four stars and a heartfelt recommendation. I think you'll be very pleased you saw it.

      Try reading the comics. The movie just shows many races as a cameo, while all of them have roles in the books, one at a time. You will enjoy recognizing what each one is, its history and customs. And also why the Shingouz act like they do.

    For me it was Cara and the lack of story telling.
    The trailers it just looked like a movie with pretty effects which didn't do much for me. It was so hard to even catch up with the trailers at times. Plus every time it came on my TV there was only a sentence said.
    With Cara I still see her as a model her acting doesn't impress me. I don't feel like she becomes a character. When I see her in these trailers I don't feel like I'm experiencing anything new. It looks like a movie with a model as the lead role. I love Nicki Minaj but Cara in these movies is the equivalent of Nicki's cameos.

    Admittedly I had very low expectations, so the first ten minutes I could hardly catch my breath, freakin amazing!
    It is ridiculous that everybody is talking this movie down!
    As a conspiracy-lover I also feel inclined to believe that maybe Hollywood - critics, studios, trade mags and all - didn't want to give France the chance to shine, since the movie was produced in brand new studios near Paris.

    I was talked into going to see this movie, and I regret it. Valerian failed because the central love story could be out-performed by middle schoolers. The guy likes the girl from the start in a way that seems boring and empty, and she isn't at all interested (for obvious reasons). Then, by the end, with no character growth whatsoever, they're making out in a space capsule. Both characters are as one-dimensional and flat as in the beginning. Nothing changed. The story was okay and special effects were cool, but the characters were the worst I've seen in theaters. Sorry about the rant, but this movie kind of sucked.

I found the plot interesting and well paced , better than Avatar that in the end , was the usual story of kind of Indians and cowboys.... The two main actors were also good and who said that two not very famous actors cannot be good in their roles only because they're not blockbusters' names??They were convincing IMO... The market has been drenched recently with young adult novel-movie adaptations like Divergent or Maze Runner whose characters are unrelatable and whose plots are intelligence-insulting. Valerian may be nothing like those movies but when people see these really young actors playing roles better suited for people in their 30s or 40s... that's what they associate it with. People are tired of it.
