      Many thanks. It's a great walk. I hope you get the chance to do it. Consider giving yourself an extra day to spend in Keswick. There's nice walks around the lake and plenty of good shops / places to eat. I also recommend the guidebook by John Gillham... it was very useful (both for planning the walk and for tips along the way). Thanks for watching....all the best, Richard

    Will be doing this with my dad at the end of this month. I live down south and my dad lives in Barrow, south of Ulverston. we'll be starting from there. I haven't seem my parents in nearly a year and this is how we're going to celebrate seeing each other again. You made it look so easy! wish us luck

      Thanks Dave... I appreciate it. I really enjoyed the Cumbria Way. It was my first experience of the Lake District and it's definitely a place I would like to revisit. I did the basic low-level route but there are alternate higher routes that go up into the fells which could make for some great hiking. All of the route choices are set out in the Cicerone Guide by John Gillham which I recommend. I did personally enjoy the WHW more but that was in large part because of the people I met on that trip... One thing to be aware of... both trips have underwhelming starts... The first few miles of the Cumbria Way are quite frustrating as there are many fields to walk through and stiles to cross (and it's easy to take a wrong turn)... I'd say the walk doesn't really get going until you reach Coniston. From there to Caldbeck it was very good. The last stint to Carlisle is a bit dull... The first 15 miles of the WHW are also underwhelming (assuming you walk the usual way, South to North, as I did)... It gets good once you pass Drymen and approach Comic Hill. The whole section along Loch Lomond is great as is Rannoch Moor and, of course, Glencoe is spectacular... thanks again for watching and I hope your Easter plans work out. All the best, Richard

      @richardrambles6259  5 лет назад

      Thanks Dave. I appreciate it. I hope you get a chance to walk it. There is some great scenery along the way. I did the normal route but there is also the option of mixing in alternate (mountain) routes on 3 of the stages. Those options are set out in the Cicerone guide to the Cumbria Way, which I recommend. The guidebook is also useful because some sections of the walk (especially the first 10 miles or so) involve going through farmland with lots of stiles and gates - all in close proximity.The signposting isn't great and picking the right course can be tricky so the detailed descriptions in the guidebook help. Also consider taking an extra day or so at some point to take in more of the area - if you take a day off in Kewsick, for example, there are boat trips out onto Derwent Water which are worthwhile. Thanks for watching. All the best. Richard

      Thanks very much! It was your video that encouraged me to do the walk so I'm grateful to you for that because it was a great experience. Your book was really helpful too, both for planning the trip and for keeping me on course.. especially on the first day when there are a lot of fields and stiles to negotiate... without your detailed descriptions I would've taken a few wrong turns! It was a shame to lose it... hopefully somebody found it and perhaps it spurred them on to do the walk too! Thanks for watching and for your kind comments. I appreciate it! And for your efforts compiling the book... It's s great resource. All the best, Richard

    Excellent video. Toying with this walk or the WHW? Which one would you go for? I want to wild camp either way.

    • @richardrambles6259
      @richardrambles6259  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I really liked both walks but if I had to choose one I'd choose the WHW... the first 15 miles of it aren't great but once you reach Conic Hill where Loch Lomond first comes into view it's great. Later, there's the fantastic section across Rannoch Moor and through Glencoe... lots of excellent wild camping opportunities there. And amazing scenery all around. On Rannoch Moor I recommend camping beside the Ba Cottage ruins... great views, flat pitch, and a fast-flowing river nearby. Plus, lots of deer roaming about. It feels really wild there. The Cumbria Way was really enjoyable... I did the standard route but several stages have an alternate (mountain) route which I imagine would lend themselves to some great wild camping opportunities. The alternate sections are set out in the Cicerone guide and I might go back and do them at some point.. Whichever walk you choose you'll be in for some great scenery.

    Great video! Do you have a kit list of the things you took for this trip? Considering doing this trip in the next few months.

    • @richardrambles6259
      @richardrambles6259  5 лет назад

      Thanks for watching Shanice. I hope it gives an idea of what the walk is like. I thoroughly enjoyed. I did get very lucky with the weather. 5 days in the Lake District and no rain! That doesn't happen often! I will do up a kit list and add it to the video description... I won't have time today but I'll have it done by tomorrow evening. If you're planning on doing the walk I thoroughly recommend taking both the guidebook and the map. The Cicerone guidebook is very useful for helping navigate through the farmland sections where it's easy to take a wrong turn. The walk isn't well-marked in places so I definitely had to consult the guidebook a lot. Also, if it fits with your plans, consider taking a rest day in Keswick. It's a great town with lots to do and a day off would let you see the sights and take a boat trip etc.. instead of just rushing through. Thanks again for watching!

      I actually stayed in a B&B in Keswick... the World Cup was on and I wanted to stay somewhere with a TV to watch some of the games! I also wanted to take a boat trip on Derwent Water so it was handy being able to leave my camping gear in my room. You live in a beautiful area... I hope to get back to the Lake District sometime soon!

      Hi David. Thanks for the comment. I thoroughly recommend the Cumbria Way. Great scenery. I was very lucky to get great weather too. My tent is a Nigor Wickiup 3 with the half-size (one man) inner. It's been a great tent for me. I'm 6 foot 4 so there's not many tents I can sit up in but this one I can... with ease. If you'd like to see s proper review check out Renegade Scots RUclips channel. He did a thorough review, as did Chris Townsend in The Great Outdoors magazine

      Thanks for your very kind comments Les. I really appreciate it. It's nice to know that the videos might be enjoyable / useful for people. I've certainly learned a lot from watching other people's hiking videos and gear videos. I find them strangely addictive! The camera I use is a compact, point-and-shoot.... Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ60. It's very small and lightweight so it's great for taking it on hiking trips. It's been around for about 4 years do there's lots of newer models with more features but it still works well. It shoots full HD and has a good zoom and stabilisation. I use it with a small Manfrotto Pixi tripod. The Hexpeak looks like a great tent. Mine is definitely similar... a Nigor Wikiup 3. I really like the internal space that pyramid-style tents provide. Thanks again for your kind comments. I will hopefully have a new video up shortly. I am just back from a hiking trip to the Alps so I'll make a video about that. I'm quite slow at editing though! All the best... Richard
