RED TARN in the Lake District is a perfect place for an early wild camping adventure. Plenty of places to pitch your tent and a fairly easy hike to get there from Patterdale. A mountain experience with tranquility without being too extreme.
This is my take on wild camping for beginners and although I haven’t included everything you need to know, hopefully you’ll pick up a bit of positive advice to add to your knowledge and understanding.

I’m 60 years old enforces and been out 9 years , thought after watching your video I’d give it a bash from hartsop, oh what a mare. Went the steepest way up, so blowing out my arse after 20 mins, that bad I never made it all the way up due to starting late, ended up pictching half way up on a slope. Got through the night with great star show and scenery, coming back down I felt like a clown with piles. Now in a warm bath and fixing my first challenge to do some more in a couple of weeks, the tarn was full of kids so kept to myself. If it wasn’t for your videos I’d be a right couch potatoes, your right , the scenery and sense of accomplishment is priceless. Thank you bro

I've been wild camping now for over 40 years and still found your video inspiring. Excellent filming and editing. Totally sound, comprehensive advice presented in a carefully considered way. Testing gear first in a safe environment is such crucial advice. I would also advise familiarising oneself with, for example, zips and draw cords on jackets (while standing in a shower!). Also, take a suitably sized bottle to pee in at night, especially if it's raining, and a cloth in case of spills! A microfiber towel is very useful to remove condensation from the fly inner, as well as for getting dry after tarn swims.
Thanks for a superb piece of work.

I'm pleased you mention Learning Curves; Iv Wild Camped since the age of 14yrs old, now at 60yrs of age, I have never understood why manufacturers still wind test their tents door facing the wind? I never ever pitch door into the wind & never known anyone that would. You should do a Video of how people can get blown off the side of Mountains if they get the wrong info.
I also pack the tent away with the back corner pegging point showing, this is for heavy storm force winds, tent bag tide to Bergen or self, then before the tent comes out of the bag, I put a peg through that back pegging point then into the ground, tent still in the bag. I then ready the Poles, then I take the tent from bag letting it face itself down the wind anchoring all the points before I put the poles in & guyed out. & Yes, Leave no trace. Great Videos, Thank You.

I'm glad you watched it because I learned so much from you I'm 63 years old and I am retired I just enjoy your adventures and all the efforts you put into it especially in Scotland when you're up on that spine of the mountain in what you could have just felt either side at any time. You are a great inspiration to me as many other bushcrafters are as well I watch many hours of other bushcrafters and hikers. I have learned many things about England camping areas such as Dartmoor the lake district the Wainwright trails and Wales. Then come winter you’ll have a bit more experience and you may spend on the winter essentials nearer the time.

Thanks very much for this. I'm returning to wild camping after years away so I wanted a refresher. - Great video mate so thanks . One thing I've always taken in gaffer tape in my kit. Great for mending most bits of kit and body parts from cuts to strengthening ankles after a sprain (and I'm sure it would help out with runners nips as well, as long as you put something under the tender bit lol) Thanks again mate, really enjoyed it.

Before going to Formula Student last year, I took my tent and camped in the garden overnight. It was really good weather and went perfectly. I'm planning on getting my tent from home and camping near uni, I have a plan to camp overnight up or nearby Pen Y Fan (maybe next to Llyn Cwm Llwch as it's more sheltered) but first I'm going to try an overnight camp nearby where I'm living to make sure my kit keeps me warm enough and tent works (and the stove). I'd rather find out something doesn't work whilst I'm 10 mins walk from my room instead of 2-4 hours from the nearest town.

Great video, and great advice................... nice to see you encouraged some other guy to attempt a cool down in the tarn! Like you say 'Get Out' there! Looking to purchase a Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 or Fjallraven Abisko Lite 2.2 Not sure which. I have a Thermarest Quest -18C Long which gives me plenty of length and width (I toss and turn in my sleep, and this bag does not move with me, it is great and really warm in all conditions); added to that I have Exped Dura 8r long mat with a Dulux Sea to Summit pillow. Like you stated 'Buy cheap and buy twice (or more). My gear will last for years and eventualy through use will cost pennies per use over the years. Most of my mountain, hill, walking clothes I look out for Ebay (i.e. Mountain Equipment, Rab, Montane) for next to new and get up for around a third of the price and sometimes a lot less. If the gear needs re water proofing then I use a special nik wax wash and spray. Works out a lot cheaper and top gear.

Cannot believe that although I've been camping for years the beanie cap over the eyes idea has never even occurred to me! 😀Love my trekker chair. Only just recently acquired. That's gonna make such a huge difference when the long nights arrive. Totally agree with you about the down jacket. I've never worn mine to actually walk in but it's a godsend when relaxing at the end of the day; just to complete the "dunlop tyre man" look I've got the matching trousers for winter.

You and Haze are awesome with your videos and advice .. thank you. Its a double edged sword though, videos like this inspire and educate but also during lock down I believe the popularity of you tube and vids on wild camping has also had a negative effect. I am no expert and just play at it but I have done motorcycle adventures with wild camping for years and started doing more hiking the last 4 or 5 years and it was almost like the best kept secret and done by like minded people. Now though, there are more and more people whose camping is all about how many cans of ale and bottles of red can be chugged, roaring fires and burning steaks ... I know I risk being a right tart about this but honestly, never known such disregard for litter, noise, damage and just upping and leaving everything ... but 15 mins of Go Pro footage in the can ... I hope it all settles back down as Prague reopens for stags and Go Outdoor membership cards run out ... told you I would rant like a tart 😷😋 ... I know that you guys who have always done it right will always tell it right as well and call out such tools ... I guess we cant be too upm our own ar*es about it all? I just prefered pre-you tube but watch these vids all the time, can't win 🤣 cheers.

Lock down has definitely lead to more fly camping but none of those types watch RUclips videos for inspiration. The people who watch I would say are generally true wild campers or wannabe true wild campers. I feel in today’s society there is too much time spend off the natural earth so inspiring people to get outside and re connect with nature is one of the main ways to combat several physical and mental conditions that too many people suffer with. I think certain RUclipsrs promote this well and are helping people live happier lives and to be more respectful to Mother Nature. Soon the ‘fly camping’ lot will be back doing their thing elsewhere but if it continues I’d be happy with very hefty fines or more importantly community service by cleaning our National parks.
      Thanks for your message.
