Hey Chaps! What Laptop are you usng right now??
Waited for the Surface event, underwhelmed, bought an ASUS ROG Flow X16. Happy.
M1 MacBook Air, but I am quite jealous of the £1,269 black Surface 5. Is 8 GB of RAM good enough for everyday tasks?
Surface Pro X. Most of the reviewers plain don't understand Windows on ARM. If you have suitable apps, not all need to be native to be good, it's best in class. I'd like a Surface Laptop on ARM though. After two Surface Pros I'd like a clamshell. Still a great Surface Pro though.
@@scg159 yep. 8GB is the sweet spot on Windows, MacOS and ChromeOS (although that can be used with 4GB). It'll want to be running a lot of apps to need 16GB. Video editing is not an every day task.
Should compare it to Samsung book 2 pro 360
My previous laptop was a Surface Laptop 1. Too bad I still see that same bezel on a 5 gen. I love the build quality and this new bar Microsoft has set for Windows laptops, but design-wise this hasn't gone very far.
Great review as always! I'm still using my Surface Laptop 3 that I bought about 3 years ago from the US during a Cyber Monday sale...$1199 for the 16GB/256 Core i7 version, absolute bargain considering the same laptop in the UK was £1799!! Been working great during this time, performance is on point! Everything runs just as it should!
Only downside would be the battery life like you mentioned seems to be the same problem with the Laptop 5, I'm definitely getting nowhere near the 8/9hrs quoted by Microsoft! Even though the Laptop 3 only has Intel Iris Graphics (not Xe), it can still run some games pretty well, including The Outer Worlds, and Wolfenstein New Order!
how's about your battery life
I was an early adopter of Surface products (anyone remember the RT?) and if I hadn't made the switch to Apple land a few years ago the Surface laptops would still be on my short list.
Thank you for this mate!
At this point, I am waiting for MS to update their Surface Laptop Studio to 12th Gen processors.
The Surface Laptop Studio is pretty much what I need, but the current 11th Gen inside of it is a bit disappointing - hopefully it doesn't take them too long to update it.
I am currently using a Surface Go (from the very first batch) that is probably in it's last legs and looking for an upgrade. I really love the idea of sticking to MS and the Surface family, but the Dell XPS is not allowing me to make a final decision. I might end up getting the Laptop 4 at the end of the day, but just waiting another week to see what Black Friday brings, here in Canada.

I just got one of theses for work, I got $800 off so the price is right for me, good build quality, and I work primarily with Microsoft products. I had/have a 2019 Dell XPS 15 with Touch Screen which now becomes mine (work paid for it, and the SL 5 too), but to be honest I was put off getting another XPS because initially they are a pain in the arse having to fix drivers and get the bugs out of it and now and then it gives me grief. I just wanted something minimalist that works cleanly. The dock is a bit overpriced but I got a discount on that too. Was tempted by the Surface Pro 9, but the stand and keyboard designs just don't work for my set up, and the pen stylus still works with the Laptop 5 anyway.
The price for only 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage is too much imo
agreed
Great video. I am trying to decide between the Surface laptop 5, XPS 13 plus and XPS 15 for business use. I work in marketing, and do some work in Photoshop and Illustrator. I have watched several videos, and am quite confused, lol. Do you have a suggestion. Thanks
Yep truly a lovely looking machine... If this was on 2014
Honestly, it is hard for me to recommend anything other than the M1 Air for people doing normal computer work with no gaming (browsing the web, office work, etc...). It is thin, light, has a fantastic keyboard, best trackpad in the industry, Touch ID, best battery life around with 18 hours, and it never even gets what I would call warm to the touch. You can get it refurbished for $750 and brand new you can often find it for $850 or everyday from Apple for $899 with an education discount (no proof needed). I've had mine since the beginning of June 2021 and it has been the best laptop I've ever purchased and I own a LOT of tech.
I would totally buy a M1 Air... If it had Windows
even with gaming (emulation + new titles like RE8) it's absolutely fantastic. i have an m1 air 16gb, 7 core GPU, and it's been absolutely perfect for everything i throw at it. even high end emulation
@@nintendork07 I have the M1 Air 16gb/1tb/8core gpu and I've noticed that most older games are totally playable through parallels if you crank the details down on some of the more demanding ones and that crossover will make some of them playable with higher details. I have a pretty big backlog of older/indie games that are now totally playable on it + like you said, pretty much any emulator runs great. However, for those who are exclusively gaming, or playing competitive shooters, they need to stick to a gaming laptop. I mainly use my switch and my xbox for gaming though so I'm fine.
@@nintendork07 8
I agree with you except for the keyboard. It's far from fantastic. I can't stand it. I tried the one on the Laptop 4 and that was a good experience.
The best overall
Good luck man .
I bought one of these a week ago, 15 inch 512ssd, i7 1255u. I was able to spend just 1.4k instead of 1.8k. I use it for coding with python and doing web development, absolutely fine and with the touchscreen I find myself more than comfortable for adjusting windows size during productivity sessions.
I'll recommend it also if you have to type a lot, like me. It's much better than anything else.
how's the battery life?
battery life?
Excellent review. The Surface laptop will certainly motivate people to do their tasks efficiently.
I’ve been a hardcore windows and surface user for years but damn those MacBook airs are so much better for the money. Microsoft is killing me with this prices and specs 😢
As long as they run MacOS, they cannot be a rival to Windows laptops in terms of productivity.
@@gro967 lol yeah that’s why they are the most selling laptops
11 months later I got the top spec one (15" 32 GB, 1 TB, i7) with a $560 discount ($1840)
Please review the lenovo thinkpad z13, cheers from Honduras !
Hi The Tech Chap, great Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 for me
How does this compare to the 2017 MacBook Air? Is it a substantial upgrade? I'm primarily using it for work, multitasking, scheduling and creating documents. I don't want to jump on the bandwagon of Apple, although their devices are really nice and powerful, but I I do want to try something new.
Really do appreciate your product updates. As I have repeatedly stated living on USA Social Security with defective COLA s I am excluded from any purchase other than gasoline that honestly I can't afford. That said I live in computer heaven. My Samsung S21 is beautiful and I adjust it to escape it's flaws. My recently debuged nine years old Window 7 ZOTAC remains nearly perfect for me. My fifteen years old Window 10 HP beautiful laptop tough truly showing it's performance age does please me when ever I use it. Finally my 42 inch ultra HD Sharp Hensen Smart TV is the best and again I want no alternative. So with no disposal income computers are not a problem. In closing I want to add that my bag of tricks also includes a Sony PSP a Samsung Oculis Gear VR and a Sony Tablet and a Sylvania Bluetooth Speaker plus a Sony Premium Headphones and Jacked Headphones.
I have the Dell XPS 13" 2 in-1 with the fan and it's loud and hot. I could just be working on a document and it sounds like I'm on a raid on an MMORPG.
I would buy the SL5 over the XPS 13 (since I have both last year's models). Why? I wanted to love the XPS 13 but performance never matched the price - $1,699 for the 16GB/512GB.. I bought the SL4 (8GB/512GB) for $949 and it was good at everything.
One of the best laptop after surface studio.. very useful and optimized windows ..
I want to get the HP spectre x360 16 12th gen. And I am wondering if the intel arc a370m is good for my personal tasks such as college / microsoft word, excel, powerpoint work. Searching the web with 5 to 10 tabs open. Watching youtube, nextflix etc all day. Maybe some light video editing and basic entry level coding. Would this laptop get it done??
Going with Mac book air m2
*better display 500 nits 10 bit dolbyvision support smaller bezezels
* has 1080p web cam
* segment best speakers ,trackpad ,microphones
* insane battery life
* full Performance without plug in
* thinner and lighter
* best laptop for editing works due to industry leading media engines 8k and prores encoders and decoders ,
* way more powerful integrated gpu and M2 is a beast
* built like a tank
One thing that negates everything for me: MacOS.
macOS. 💩
Honestly, I switche to a MBA because of mobile development, but I completely miss the Surface. I'm thinking of getting one to do the projects that don't involve mobile development
When a reviewer is stuck with words to describe a product, such as sufficient, OK, don't mind etc.... it tells me at this price, there are much better options out there.
just make bezel thinner & SL5 can be the best windows laptop today
also as window user i can trade touchscreen with thinner bezel
You said no fingerprint scanner.. True, but I didn't hear you mention "Hello" face id. Did I miss that?
Could you update your playlist named “laptops”? I was looking for current videos on laptops and saw some from 5 years ago.

The SL weakness is the screen and track pad for such a premium device.
Screen glare is really bad on SL4. Presume same on this? Plus it’s no match on colour as the MacBook.
The track pad is also nowhere near as nice to use as the mac.
This green suits you, it looks stylish.
Cheers!
Is this good for business owners who create graphic designs/ tons of downloading?
u healed the enemy reinhard
The M1 Macbook Air goes for 750€ used on Ebay in excellent condition and sometimes even less which is insane value. I've stopped buying new hardware years ago and the amount of money I saved is ridiculous.
Refurbished thin and light can really go down in price too like the HP Victus 16-E1085CL 16.1" IPS FHD 1920x1080 Gaming Laptop AMD Ryzen 7 6800H 3.2GHz 32GB 1TB SSD RTX 3050 Ti Windows 11 which is $899 on Newegg now
@@HoodHussler Hey stop recommending the ugly heavy laptop lol

The Unreliable ugly heavy laptop.
Can you review surface pro 9 please!?
While I love the idea of the MS Laptop I’m leaning towards the Dell XPS Plus, I’ve compared specs and although the screen is a little less quality on the Dell (unless you upgrade it) then the CPU and overall design does look a lot more cutting edge.

@@The.TechChap Be careful with Dell fan noise in Dell laptops
Either MacBook Air or Dell XPS, of course.
Is it better than a Samsung Book pro with an OLED screen
Happy I did not wait for the Laptop 5, quite happy with the XPS Plus. in fact, the design of the XPS Plus has ruined me from liking any other laptop Macbook or Surface.
XPS Plus is definitely a better option
@@Thetechchap thanks for the reply.
Choosing dell but what about the problematic drivers they deliver recently, such a letdown for the XPS line up.

It sounds premium, I'm pretty sure that is a laptop review first. I've purchased several of the 3rd gen of these and they are great, that being said, there are so many better options these days for the price (including chromebooks), that I can't see buying the 5th generation.
I mean, it's the laptop of surface, not sure what kind of upgrade you expect but the internals. It's not like waiting for apple to have touch screen, form factor like surface laptop studio, or pen support. Duh
If you see black bars while watching a movie it means the movie is not worth watching😂.
Wether I5 version is 12 core ? Also there is 512 ssd with I5 version?
They did the same with the Surface Pro 4-7 remember.
Hmmm, glad I've seen this review. It seems that there's better alternatives to the surface, such as the HP envy x360 13" 2 in 1 at this point at a similar price on paper.
It's a shame because if the surface had better bezels and more of a selection of ports, it would deffo be a good choice worth considering for a thin and light ultrabook. At least it seems that way to me anyway.
The Surface Laptop 5 is a good laptop, but I agree I think there are better options
No bro don’t buy that laptop they don’t have a battery optimization trust me your laptop battery will be useless after 1 and half year or two
@@Ethioboy98 ah imma have to do a bit of research in my case then. Where did you find this info if you don’t mind me asking?
The really should upgrade the screen. OLED, MiniLED whatever, at least for the top spec model.
AMD 6000 series is better in thin and light category. I don't understand why MS ia all in Intel this time.
The thick bezels especially .They look hideous in 2022.
Well I have the XPS 13 UHD and while the screen is really nice the battery life has always been horrendous. So while the performance is good I'm constantly searching for a plug in.
Why don't they give
Nvidia mx350/450 graphics?
🫣 Microsoft’s anti glare coating has always been non-existent.
I know right. LOL.... They refuse to use Anti-Glare coating for some strange reason.
The biggest problem with windows laptops is the trackpad. If the surface trackpad can be changed to as same as Magic Trackpad, I would like to have one.
Multiple windows laptops are beginning to use haptic trackpads like Apple. The Surface Laptop Studio uses one and it's quite amazing. It is my daily driver and it really is a great laptop.
@@EmilFDT Yes, I have a Huawei Matebook x pro that uses the same trackpad, significantly improving productivity. I'm curious to know how much the haptic trackpad costs and why only a few manufacturers have been willing to do this for so many years. Comparing the high-end Windows laptops and Macbooks in terms of hardware, Windows laptops are almost lost in every aspect. I don't know why we spend the same money but cannot get the same good products.
I probably would ditch my MacBook 16 for the Laptop 5, but for some unknown, probably very stupid, reason the top-spec model is only in black. If it was silver - immediate purchase
I just got the Laptop 4 for 500 Euros so Im not complaining that I dont miss out on too much :D

Webcam looks great. Not the yellow cast which all MacBooks have. Microphone best in class.
ite web cam is even worse than MacBook Pro m1 720p and no match for studio quality mics in that ,, also trackpad speakers,, display quality, also surface anireflictivity coating sucks ,battery life , and video editing works no way to match MacBooks media engines
Yep. Alot of people still complaining about it being 720p, yet it looks better than most 1080p webcams on other laptops. Software can work wonders.
ssd upgradation possible?
When looks becomes more important that the function

I really hoped this yrs laptop 5 would get thin symmetrical bezels,OLED or Mini LED high refresh rate option.Sad Microsoft doesn’t really care about the laptop range thay much.

I purchased three SL5 and they were all incompatible with Surface Slim pen 2 and Surface pen (and a third party pen). When I kept using the pens, touch screen stopped working randomly. I confirmed these pens work perfectly fine on my Surface Pro3 without any issue so I think it's the issue of entire SL5 lines (which is serious problem I think). I reported this issue to MS customer team, but they were saying only three SL5 units that I've tested could have hardware failure issue, not the entire SL5 lines, and closed the case. I think this is ridiculous that they were saying only three units (brand new) that I've tested have hardware failure because such probablity is extremetly low and it's more likely that it's the issue of entire SL5 lines. I think this is serious problem, and MS should come up with firmware update or something, but they seem not interested so far. I'd greatly appreciate if you could test on your SL5 with Surface pen (or third party stylus) to see if touch screen stops working randomly (you have to keep using it repeatedly) and publish the video so that more people get to know about the issue and MS can start investigating it more properly.
could please somebody tell me how comfortable it is to use the screen to write on? as a teacher i would use this option during class to write answers on worksheets and so on. I guess the surface pro convertible would be a better option, but i prefer 15“ screens…
Well, our college principle decided to buy all the teachers MS Go 3 and everyone is very happy with it. However we have the hub in every classroom so the size of the scream does not matter that much.
Cmon Microsoft reduce the bezels or something. at least act like you’re trying
As soon as I hear Apple level built quality, I appreciated my macbook air one more time......Apple has no doubt set a benchmark with there macs
Also still apple holds the crown for segement best built quality, speakers trackpad, microphes, full perfomance without plugs in,inasne battery life, and the best lap for editing works due to media engines, and fab 2.5k dolbyvison support display... 😍😍😍
@@busybee2148 No doubt.....but with m2 macs, I was very much hoping for better display better passive cooling and more storage( or lesser price for base model)

I am crossing out any laptop with a glossy screen. This one is just removed from competition before it even started.
This was a great review. Please make a hands on review on the Surface Pro 9. I do Intend to buy a Surface Pro in the next 4-5 years. These are amazing devices and I can’t wait to see what Microsoft do with the Surface Pro and their remaining Surface lineup in the near future.
Is this i5 or i7 that he was reviewing?
All the MacBook comparisons are pointless. Yes, the MBA is a better machine, but many people don't want to switch to Mac OS. For those wanting a stylish Windows laptop with decent price and a nice screen, this works.
Speak for yourself. I switched to macOS and won't go back.
What a braindead comment.
Use any windows non Microsoft brand laptop, you’ll get better battery and better performance at a lower price
Touchscreen on a clamshell only has very limited value though. The occasional use. It adds expense and weight too.
anyone suggest this as a college laptop ?
If a person is in the Apple ecosystem, this is not even a question. The M1 or M2 Air is a better machine. If a person is upgrading from another PC, this could be an excellent choice. I just got one second-hand for under £400. From Microsoft (MSFT) it is currently £1479.
MSFT is NOT trying to make the cheapest or most performant devices. They create devices that have that “I love it” factor. Just use one for a week, and you’ll get used to the loveliness of the device. Other laptops do not give you that.
The XPS line looks good for a while, but then they begin to look grubby. The plastic looks like plastic, even though when it is new they tell you it is "Carboin fibre" and you can see the wear.
Have you ever seen someone with a cover on their XPS 13? No!
I have seen covers on MacBooks all the time and on Surface laptops because people think they are lovely devices and want them to stay that way. Again, I understand that they are not the most performant, but who is buying them? This is for someone who is doing email, surfing, possibly some video watching, maybe some photo editing, and consuming Netflix, etc. It’s a computer for work and using work applications-not for someone doing coding or graphically intense tasks. It’s for someone who would be using a MacBook Air but is not in the Apple ecosystem. Someone who wants something more durable than an XPS and looks great. Something that will last 4 or 5 years. The fact that it’s made by Microsoft is a real bonus. I wish the bezels were smaller and that it was lighter and faster, etc. However, it is an absolutely gorgeous machine.
Every time you open it and it logs you in, you can get straight to what you were looking to do. I know lots of Windows laptops do that, but none do it quite like this.
The closest thing to this is a MacBook-and that is off the menu.
HP, Dell, Asus all have alternatives, and the HP is probably the closest in build, but none of them come really close to the build quality here. It really is that good.
Look, I am obviously saying all this in the context of getting it for under £400. Would I have paid the full price - I don't think so. If anything - just like you suggested I would probably have gone for last year's Ryzen version. The device is a winer and the touch screen is a differentiator for me.
Using Surface laptops is it's own thing and I cannot imagine not doing so at the moment.
Why would I want to pay for a touchscreen I'd never touch
I mean, what?
Microsoft is known for their questionable choices. Dropping AMD from the lineup? I wonder how much intel has paid them.
Do you think Huawei D16 is better than Microsoft Surface Laptop 5?
Can't buy them in most of the world now. Huawei is Banned...
@@AA-flyguy, it's available in my country.

No way people in Microsoft thought this is a good laptop to release... U series processors? Atleast give us P series ... Which is comparable to M1 and M2 ...
Agreed - especially as see the P series in the even slimmer XPS 13 Plus
Thanks man. I am ditching my plan to buy surface 5 with Intel. I would rather buy AMD one surface 4. Will even send it to China to upgrade the ssd if I cannot do it. AMD 6000 Series is the killer. We must push Microsoft to release surface 5 with AMD 6000 series chipset.
This is honestly a very embarrassing attempt by Microsoft pitched as Macbook Air M2 rival. At very least, they could also shaved off those thick ass bezels, it would be a much better proposition but no.
Tbh if one is a hardcore Microsoft everything kind of guy (yes, they do exist), Surface Pro is the ultimate product that represent best of Microsoft imo and unlike Surface Laptop, the Pro at least offers unique (and unarguably the best) experience as 2 in 1 detachable Windows tablet (which is still rare breed to this day). My 2 cents ...
Alcatera 🤮. My Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pro X have grubby keyboards. Not major but they're a bloody nightmare to keep clean. Wish Microsoft would offer both on all SKUs.
Microsoft making their own CPU would be a bad move.
MICROSOFT REALLY NEEDS TO BOUNCEBACK ANDCOMPETE WITH APPLE'S MACBOOK...I AM ROOTING FOR MICROSOFT...I KNOW THEY LL DELIVER
nice 2010 bezels
Now I face with laptop 4 battery just show 50% is the maximum evenly I charge over 5 hours how can I charge this until 100%
I don't understand why they keep making ultrathin laptops with Intel Xe graphics which is a joke to make a compliment. What about a few mm bigger and with more powerful chips? Does anyone need such a ultraportable device?
I suspect most people don't need a dedicated GPU. Portability + Long battery life is more important I think.
It’s gonna sound petty, but if they fixed the damn bezels I’d be willing to consider it
Dell xps got the best keyboard. No doubt in that.
Only reason i got the laptop 5 over other laptops because i got $1500 microsoft credits...
The Microsoft Surface Laptop is my favourite laptops lineup, it's in my opinion easily the best looking laptop.
But this is extremely disappointing, no way this laptop is worth buying over other competitors or even over the previous model (with a price drop).
I really really hope that there will be an upgrade next year on the Surface Laptop 6 that's worth.
