How to Paint a RURAL LANDSCAPE - Tips For Mixing Grass Greens, Painting Light and Composition
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 авг 2024
- In this video I will show you how to paint a rural landscape that features some atmospheric spotlighting effects. This painting is inspired by the Northland region in northern New Zealand and it originally started as a plein air painting. I then took it back to the studio and added more details to it.
Now, even though this art work started as a field painting I use the exact same painting methodology whether in the studio or painting outdoors.
Check out the written notes that accompany this video. Please feel free to use the reference photos if you would like to have a go at painting this.

Happy painting.
Sam
Every week I have the thought "I hope Sam is releasing a new video this week". I don't think I've ever been let down. Another fine job!
Thanks John. I'm trying to get a video out a week at the moment but sometimes it's not possible due to the paintings taking time...I'm doing my best to get more videos out and I have more in the pipeline. Thanks for subscribing, stay tuned 😊
You and Andrew Tischler are wonderful!!! Love you both!
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you, I am really grateful for your channel and videos, high quality content, you're awesome
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching 😀
I am just as impressed with your botanical knowledge, as I am with your painting and teaching ability.
Thanks, I have been interested in plants since I was a kid, I also studied plant biology at uni back in the day and I am a qualified arborist. I worked in the arboriculture industry for over ten years. 😊
Thank you so much for sharing all of these wonderful tips !!! 🧡
My pleasure, thanks for watching 😀
Very nice. Your use of the different mixes and values of green really create the depth, the reality, and the beauty of your painting. I learned a lot. Thank you.
Thank you so much 😀
One of my favorite landscape demos on RUclips. I’ve probably watched it at least four times. Fantastic painting, Sam! You’re such a great teacher as well.
My pleasure, thank you 😊
Another brilliant painting by Samuel Earp Artist! Thank you again for your Pateron! I love it!
I bought my favourite one of your videos as well I am so happy I found you! Thank you again 😊.
Awesome, thank you so much Autum 😊
I am learning to do oils for the first time and have found your videos so informative. I normally do watercolor, gouache and acrylic and find doing oils such a struggle. My brain wants to revert to my techniques for my water based mediums, which really does not help me achieve what I want with oils. Just watching you paint and you explaining what you are doing and why, is really helping me understand how I need to approach oils. Thank you for your videos!
You are so welcome, thanks for watching 😊
I really appreciate the way you are communicating what colour paint you are mixing, helps a lot.
Thank you so much 😀
I love the way your landscapes turnout. A perspective and style very soothing.. thank you 🙏🏻 Sam as always you rock
Thanks so much Tim 😊
wonderful painting as always Sam! i love all the detailed instructions of color, value, etc. - very important! even though i paint with acrylics instead of oils, the basic principles of painting still apply while keeping in mind the differences between oils & acrylics!, bravo!!! 😊👏❤️
Thank you so much 😀 Absolutely, the principles of colour and tone are just the same with acrylics as they are with oils 😊
You're good at explaining as you go, especially the colors you're using and the mix.
Also.........the music works well and does not distract from the learning process. NICE JOB!
Thank you so much 😊
Sam, you’re awesome! I cannot tell how much I love these videos, they literally inspire and courage me to grab the brush and keep painting, thank you so much for that. I’ve always been a huge admirer of New Zealand, its stunning nature and Zealander people and you made me adore NZ even more!
Thank you so much Burak 😊
Great painting Sam and very articularly explained. Succinct with no self indulgence.
How refreshing.
Thank you so much 😀

Your welcome
You are my teacher sir
Already said this on your instagram but I must say it again... this is absolutely gorgeous! Definitely one of your best paintings so far in my opinion. I love learning how to manipulate light and create more theatrical lighting as you've done here. Thanks very much for sharing, Sam!
Thank you so much 😀
Lovely painting 🎨 great work
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you Samuel for such amazing tips
My pleasure! Thanks 😊
🤗
Another outstanding work, Sam. I've learned a ton about greens from your videos. Take care and thank you once again.
Great to hear, thanks for subscribing 😊
It was very interesting. I started painting couple years ago. I learned a lot today! Thank you!
You are so welcome! Thanks 😊
Great insight into how you turn plein air into a finished piece, really interesting, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks 😊
You live IN a painting. Stunning views.
Thank you so much, yeah there are some epic landscapes in New Zealand 😀
Very good tutorial thanks for upload and links
My pleasure 😊
Really liked this one Sam. I've learned so much from your Patreon and RUclips channels! Thank you so much!
My pleasure and thanks for subscribing. Stay tuned for September's Patreon video, I'm just about to start editing it 😊
I’m not sure how you popped up on my RUclips listing, but I’m glad you did, such a descriptive lesson, thank you. Great painting, you are good!! Initially I thought this was in the UK, but as you mentioned you are in NZ, landscape is so similar.
Glad it was helpful Sally. I actually grew up in Devon and a lot of the landscape here in Northland, New Zealand reminds me of the rolling hills in Devon. 😊
I found this and coincidentally I’m thinking of painting a family farm Town Farm which was ours in 1783. But I was worried about all the green. Thank you so much for this. It will help with the colours mixing. I don’t know about adding the cows though, I’m not a good drawer of animals. Thank you again.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful 😊
Very nice work sir 🎉
This is a really beautiful landscape-painting!

Hi Sam Thanks for all the info on painting and Web Builder , Great painting all the best...Ned
Very welcome, thanks Neville. Yes I am very happy with my Portfoliobox website, it's very easy to use. They came to me at the right time as I have been thinking about separating the painting tutorial aspect of my website and the fine art side of it for a while now. It makes sense for me to have two separate websites 😊
Thank you so much for sharing! Awesome channel!
You’re so welcome 😊
Great artwork.
Thanks 😊
Very good thanks
Most welcome 😊
Great tutorial Sam. Scene reminiscent of somewhere in the Yorkshire dales. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. I haven't been to York since I was a child. There are parts of Northland, New Zealand that reminds me of Devon where I grew up 😊
Amazing...
Thanks a lot 😊

Very nice, thanks! Lots of good info and its relaxing to watch
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you 😊

OPENNESS OF COOLING ATMOSPHERE IS FELT..
Thanks 😊
Fantastic tutorial.... new subscriber here!
Thank you, welcome aboard 😊
Wonderful again. I have this pochade box in Yellowstone. The largest one! It’s very heavy. What tripod do you use? Mine is getting old.
Hey Kim, I have a Yellowstone pochade box which I use in my studio. I use a standard camera tripod, it's made by an Italian brand called Manfrotto. These are good tripods. 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist
Yes! I should have purchased this one. I have the bonfoto tripod. It will not last long.
Thank you 😊
I love this green color 😍😍😍😍 did you change your green style? I feel like it's different from the green colors of the latest painting
Thanks. I generally use the same group of colours for mixing greens, just in different amounts depending on the landscape I am painting. 😊
Amazing. Could this be done with acrylics.?
Yes definitely! Here is a link to the written tutorial for this painting:
www.samuelearp.com/new-blog/2020/8/11/how-to-paint-a-rural-landscape-tips-for-mixing-grass-greens
Enjoyed! Are you using oil paint?
Thanks Suzanne, yes I'm using oil paint 😊
Spectacular!
Where abouts in NZ was this done and what region are you based?
Thanks. I am based in the Bay of Islands in Northland. This scene is just down the road from where I live 😊
nice work...you use gesso in that canvas?
Thanks. Yes this panel is oil-primed 😊
Hi Sam, thank you for another wonderful tutorial. Your explanations are fantastic. Can I please ask how you clean your pochade palette and whether you do this when you get home or leave it until you start again in the studio? Excuse the randomness of the question.
Thanks Kiki. I clean my pochade box on site and then if needs be clean it at home as well. As I often use the same colours when painting in the field I tend to leave them in order on my palette, but periodically I'll use some sort of paint stripper to get all the old paint off and then start again. 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist Thank you so very much, that is a great method, I am looking forward to warmer weather to get plein air painting.
Nice as always Sam, what sized panel is that, looks pretty small. Thanks, Dave M ( AUSTRALIA )😎🇦🇺
Thanks David, the panel is 8" x 10". I've been painting a lot of smaller and medium sized painting as I can get them done quicker and so make more RUclips videos 😊
wow very nice natural panting bro😊
I have idia how to get panting but sometime i can't mexing colour on my panting 🙁🇳🇵🇳🇵 from Nepal
Thank you so much 😀
Fantastic painting and great info.
What is the type of tree you mentioned? It sounds like "torturer tree", but I don't think I heard that right.
Ah. Tōtara?
Thanks Ian. The trees are tōtara trees (Podocarpus totara). All the native trees here in New Zealand have Maori names. The Maori alphabet is different to the English one and some of the letters sound different, for example the letter 'O' sounds like 'or'. I do my best to pronounce the Maori names correctly but being from England myself I sometimes get them wrong. 😊
What brand are your colours Samuel?
I use Langridge Handmade Oil Paints 😊
What paint did you use? I want to try this with watercolor.
I used oil paints for this art work 😊
😀
Хороший этюд
Спасибо 😊
