The Nishiki Alien had elevated chainstays in the early 90's. That was their very smart solution to curing chainsuck, a problem that doesn't really exist these days. At $379, I'd be very tempted to snatch one up.
I kept an eye out for sales on them after really liking it in your initial review, I ended up catching them on sale at the end of 2018 and picking it up for $320+tax (list was $699 at the time). Love it.
I held out to try to get one at my local DSG for a few months, really wanted one when I saw it on the channel and spotted one in the wild. Ended up getting a GT Avalanche 29er for about $600 and I haven't looked back. Very happy with the GT. as it came with internal routed cabling and hydraulic brakes. Love your channel.
They’re okay. Had mine for a while now. Hard to upgrade the fork unless you swap wheels and whatnot. I have mine all upgraded and it’s a pretty decent hard tail for cheap. Cost me $300 new with another Black Friday deal from Dicks when they were still cheap. Also the chain line is pretty harsh due to the frame. All in all if they’re $600+ it’s not worth.
$379 is a steal. I bought one “on sale” last year when the sale price was $625. Couldn’t find a bike anywhere at the time, so when it became available I grabbed it. This bike is amazing. The diameter of the frame tubing and the Plus sized tires is what attracted me to this bike. I am a big dude and I wanted something I would feel confident on while bombing down hills. I commute to work with it and do some casual trail riding on the weekends. I previously purchased a fat tire bike, with the idea of having a robust bicycle that could support a big dude. I soon found that fat bikes are really only practical for riding on the surface of the moon. This bike has been great for me. Solid and dependable with plenty of decent components. It is not “high-end”, but it is the most expensive bike I have ever owned and I am very happy with it.
Glad to see it come alive again. I had that bike for a couple of years and loved it. I gave it a new home with my son when I bought my Pivot but it was always a great bike and still is. Specially when it cost 10% of the cost of my Pivot. I would buy it again no doubt. And other than the fork it’s pretty easy to upgrade.
Didn't expect to see this bike again but I'm happy to see it again! One of my favorite bikes that you have reviewed so far for an amazing price. That rear design I love no chain slap and I just like the way it looks. It looks like a Single Pivot full suspension like DiamondBack Has on their Recoil and Atroz series.
Absolutely fell in love with that bike from your videos. Kept my eyes open for a sale ever since. It's rarely in stock and always around $700 when it is:( Too bad because that asymmetric chain-stay gives a mid-drive so many better chain ring options than the stock rings on most e-bike conversions.
Just a warning on the "mid-stay" : I haven't tried it on my Colorado Comp 27.5+, but I did run a 51T Shimano cassette @ my 2018 Trek Stache, and at 51T sprocket, even a 32T chainring would almost rub the mid-stay! Uncomfortable few mm of clearance for the chain. So if you plan on running a long chainring, I would recommend staying in the 45-46T range - at least for the Stache.
bought one 2nd hand after seeing your initial video....upgraded with wider handlebar, shorter stem changed to WTB Rangers after 2 years. Can't agree more, great value right out of the box.
Could you count the clicks when you back rotate the rear tire 360 degrees? I'm curious to see if any of these bike have more that 16 points of engagement. I did a Kev Central to a 2017 $500 Gravity, happy with the build except for the 15 POE. I have a bike with a 36 POE and it really makes a difference when I downshift for a quick uphill section.
It is still worth the price! I have compare a lot of bikes and this is the best deal still! At 770$ with a 2 year warranty. The sram drive train is one of a kind! High end tektro brakes. You can’t find a threw bolt for less than 1000$ and this comes tubeless ready! I did buy it! It is roscoe esk.. haha..
This thing has been on my mind for about a year, I think when you showed this to us everyone that could went and got one, driving the demand and, in result, price up. Still, for 479-500 if you can get it that cheap, probably still a good deal. But at 700, you might as well go to a 1000 dollar bike since you're on that side of the 500 mark. I'm too cheap to replace my trek just yet, but if I found this for 379 again, i would buy it for sure.🤟 thanks kevdoggg
I go with Polygon XTRADA 5 with that price with a bit of extra money! I can't find any decent bike on Walmart/Dicksports, lets say any store for months man. Anyway keep watching your videos really appreciate. Good job man.
Because of your initial video on this bike, i went out and bought a copy in 2018. Got it for $350, right before thanksgiving. I am surprised you haven't done much to it, actually, it looks completely stock, other than the paddles. Switched to slx groupset, and made this thing amazing with it. A fork upgrade is a must and on the list...
Hey new guy here. Definitely a nice bike and deal. Was wondering if you could tell me what beginners walmart bike to get? I'm 6'2" and 200lbs. Was interested in the Schwinn Boundary but if there is another close to the same price or less that you recommend that would be great.
The best value bike I've ever purchased was my $15 Royal Enfield Amazone parts bike that I bought at a garage sale. Fixed it up a little bit and now I have the perfect summer beater.
the giant / momentum UX 3S is a city commuter bike that has a chainstay like that to accommodate a belt drive - this frame would probably build nicely into that direction if someone wanted to
Yes I wanted it 2 years ago, but never found one. I ended up getting the GT 27.5+ version for about $550 similarly spaced. Thru axle, 27.5+ fat(plus) tires 2X10 drive train, Tektro etc.... Ricochet.
Good morning Mr Cash Central I am enjoying the video no doubt the 27th comp nishiki $600 is out of my range I made tab comp Schwinn guy kind of loyal too Schwinn from childhood but you're nishiki looks like a good ride continue ready to ride
Nice bike for the price. Had it for a bit over a year. The biggest weakness was the weight: was 36lbs for my 20" / L. Much of it was the XCM32 ofc. Hard to get a better fork for it because it has a unique combination of 15x110 "boost" front wheel, with a straight steerer. Typ. "boost" thru-axle forks are tapered. I bought it scratched/banged but with almost no miles on it for ~$280 in 2019, so banging deal IMHO. I was running it with Shimano MT200 hydro brakes which were a decent upgrade, a shorter stem & Rockbros pedals. Stock NX drivetrain was working great for me. It is not really practical to fit a dropper in it because the frame only allows for a very small drop, but its doable. 27.2mm post is needed, you can find externally routed ones that could be shared with a gravel or hybrid bike in the future.
Hi kev. I'm from the uk so there is no walmart but a little birdie told me that walmart are selling a hyper ebike for around $500. And wondering if you would be intrested in doing your thing and reviewing it. Thanks for reading and thanks for all the great videos over the years.👍👌
I just purchased the same one today but the 20” frame “large” purchased for $649 but, bought the 2 year extended warranty for $55. Supply and demand right now is crazy for bikes hence why the price hike. Still totally worth it so far!
Got my Nishiki in 2020 for under $600 wasn't a deal like yours kevcentral but it was worth it. Upgraded some parts on it so far with some wake handle bars & 45 mm stem. Brakes and a dropper post next :-)
GT Pantera Sport 27.5+ or Framed Marquette 27.5+/Framed Bobtrax 27.5+ Alloy are probably a better value at this point for the $750...Or even the Gravity HD 27.5 Boost...if any come back in stock or can be found in good used condition. For the GT Pantera specifically, it's 2x9, tapered headtube, clearance for at least 3" tires (I have Vee Trax Fatty 27.5x3.25 on there but on the 35mm rim only about 0.2" wider than the stock 2.8s), nice frame, etc. Drivetrain is lower end but not bad to upgrade with Microshift options probably - personally I'm going to 1x11 with spare parts I have whenever something breaks. Main quirks are 141 boost QR rear (some Boost 148 hubs have endcaps if you ever swap wheels). And the fork is really basic Suntour XCM with no lockout. But, bikes are scarce right now especially plus and fat bikes.
When you did a video on this bike a while ago I tried to find on and couldn't. Read a lot of good on it. But could never find one. I know more now than I did then, in part thanks to you, I would be ok with around 450 for it. But I have a marlin 6 now to play with so.....
Recommended it to a good friend whose son was looking for a new bike after riding an early 2010's Trek Marlin into the ground. Same observation with seeing it list and disappear from DSG website. This really was an amazing value at sub $400 for a middle or high school rider looking to buy their own bike.
Just researching what bike to get and have settled on this one. If I can't get it for 400 or even 600, what should I buy? Or should I bite the bullet and get one of these for 700?
Hey Kev I've seen on forums it's unknown whether you could knock out the bottom headset cup and add an external cup adapter to accept tapered forks. Would love to see you investigate and report back. Edit to add that I just bought one this weekend! Been looking for a bike for over a year, Found it on facebook marketplace for 400 and had to pull the trigger.
Not about this bike specifically, but have you gotten chance to check out Univega USA? They're Kent's bike shop line of bikes, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of talk of them online.
I don’t know if this is out of your budget or anything, but could you do a review on the carrera fury, I’m not sure how easy it is for you to get one as I’m pretty sure they’re uk exclusive. But if u are able to somehow get one of them then can you please review it. Personally I’d quite like to see more big box bikes u can get in the uk.
I just purchased one for 707😔 there is nothing else in stock locally thats as good as this around this price range and I want to start riding so ill stick with it. Gonna make some upgrades to it aswell, just gonna ride the heck out of it and replace/upgrade parts as I go.
I have this bike and have upgraded 80% of it. However, i need to replace the cog because i broke a couple of tooth. First major repair in two years. not bad. You wouldn't happen to know the specs on the COG i need to replace it with would ya? Love your channel.
Hey Kev ever bike out West? Granted, your typical Walmart bike wouldn't be up to the task, but it'd be super interesting to see a regular-guy rider like yourself put some affordable "real" mtbs like this one (or your project bikes) to the test out in Colorado or Utah.
You got such a nice deal! I’ve been waiting for it to go on sale and nothing. It’s now a $700 bike. I would need a comparison with a Giant Talon or a Rockhopper..
You have to respect the deal on this bike, insane for the money. Here in the UK, bikes up to £1000 are being specced OEM with the low-end SX Eagle which apparently has a whole host of problems. I'd like to see you review a bike with that group.
From what ive heard its a very heavy bike, mostly the fork and tubes in the tires which can both be upgraded to an airfork and tubeless but ive heard its still very heavy and people have also had problems with the tube for the cranks ruining
Close to 36lbs. Heavy fork. Tires/tubes make up a few pounds of that too. I’m sure the hubs are also heavy. As far as your crank hitting the chainstay. Did it bend or was it not on tight at delivery?
I was going to get the Nishiki Comp, but bought the CO-OP DRT 1.1 for $500 instead, mainly because of the straight top tube on the Niskiki, which means mounting will be harder, and how hard it was to find in stock. It was also to big for me, but if you can fit it, even for ~$650 I think it's a great deal, better than the Trek Marlin 6 by just a hair, because of that 1x.
My friend was looking for a bike, and he said that dicks had some black friday sales and he got a 20" Colorado comp for like 480. It's a still a steal. It's pretty much like a trek roscoe without a dropper and hydraulic brakes for 500 bucks less.
I was looking for one but then they priced themselves out of a sale for me when they start getting in the the price range that competes with better known brands at the local bike shop. If they come back down to $500 or lower I would think about buying this again
18 inch frames are the sweet spot for my 5 foot 9.5 inch body. I think it is the same for you because 17 inch ones are kinda tight and 19 inch ones feel like a boat and it feels long. So 18 in for the win
Are you ever gonna upgrade this? You definitely don't need to do much but If you can figure out a fork and brakeset you would have a super great riding bike!
The bike is pretty good, I didn't love the fork...pogo stick. It was heavy but fun. I tried to make those wheels tubless with no luck. It could winch up anything. I got mine for 379$ and sold it for 300 to good friend who needed a bike. Great starter bike
That rear doesn't look to be boost so it's a so close to a yes, but lack of boost spacing has me pausing. If it was under $550 I'd also swap to Hunt Enduro 37mm internal wide wheelset.
The 379 sale price is a steal!! Its specs are as good as my old giant talon... I paid $700, I still think the 600 is worth it. For the fork, have you had luck finding and air fork to fit? Or would you have to buy a new wheel set too?
I think a lot of the price and availability has to do with Covid... I remember back in June when I was looking for a new bike, nothing was in stock and these were selling for over $1000-1200 in USED condition. I got mine for a little under $600. A lot of money for a beginner bike, but needs almost no upgrades to be a reliable and fun trail bike.
This is a great bike. No way I could pay more after your deal. Im glad you got it going and updated but the price and availability mean this should be it's last appearance imo.
@@KevCentral it makes sense to cover it more from a content creators point of view. Especially since new bikes are hard to come by right now. My point is that this bike no longer fits the budget category that you cover.
The fork needs mount points. Some frames - even bikes that come with rim brakes - have mounts for disc. Also, the wheel hubs need to have holes for the rotor bolts.
You can’t have chain slap if there’s nothing for the chain to slap against!
Well stated 😁
true!
dang, that bike had so much potential to be one if, of not the, best beginner bike.
in asia you can find more good bikes within its same price range
In my opinion it is the best biginner bike i got mine for 350$ and its better than my friends bikes witch cost 500-1000$

The Nishiki Alien had elevated chainstays in the early 90's. That was their very smart solution to curing chainsuck, a problem that doesn't really exist these days.

"Borrowed from Trek" as if AlpineStars, Haro, and Nishiki themselves weren't doing elevated chainstays in the 80s and 90s already
Maybe they got it from Trek back then.

Great deal for 380. Like the grey with orange color.
For that increased price they should include hydraulic disc brakes I think.
You’re right they definitely should, at Walmart it’s going for $960
I'm happy with GOOD mechs....once they fall off I'll go Hydro..

That must be from a private seller on walmarts website, not from Walmart.

The elevated chainstay was popular in the early 90s. The Nishiki Alien was the first one I saw and I always wanted one.

BTW I got mine on sale for $279 plus taxes :D
Are you referring to the chainring up front?
@@KevCentral I’m sorry I mean the rear cassette
It’s a standard NX cassette. I don’t know that you will find a single ring. People typically replace the entire cassette when it wears.
The elevated chainstay isn't exactly borrowed from Trek, Nishiki had them quite some time ago on some fames. Other bike makers did too.
Thanks for sharing
Hey Kev ever bike out West? Granted, your typical Walmart bike wouldn't be up to the task, but it'd be super interesting to see a regular-guy rider like yourself put some affordable "real" mtbs like this one (or your project bikes) to the test out in Colorado or Utah.
I shredded this exact bike at Bootleg Canyon in Nevada when we lived there. ~2 years of (almost) daily riding and it survived like a champ.
You got such a nice deal! I’ve been waiting for it to go on sale and nothing. It’s now a $700 bike. I would need a comparison with a Giant Talon or a Rockhopper..
Definitely a less enticing prospect at the higher price
The market is pretty messed up right now. Seriously thinking if looking at 2nd hand stores and garage sales. Nice bike but no go at 600.00.
Nice informative video. I am curious as to why the dork disc is still there? 😁
I typically don’t remove them until I make a major change
@@KevCentral The last one I removed sure put up a fight. But in the end I was victorious. 🏅
I got lucky and bought one locally here in Charlotte NC for $350 off FB Marketplace last year. It has a lot of potential.
Cool bike.
Nishiki and I think Yeti made the elevated chainstay popular during the 80's.
Are you going to do a build on this one?
Yes ive been waiting on thisv thanx kev
Looks like a really fun bike to ride trails with........nice video kev!
So completely jealous🤤😂
Your bday is coming up. Have someone buy you one lol
That thing is like $700 now, kinda annoying.
My friend was looking for a bike, and he said that dicks had some black friday sales and he got a 20" Colorado comp for like 480. It's a still a steal. It's pretty much like a trek roscoe without a dropper and hydraulic brakes for 500 bucks less.
Any upgradable forks out there for this bike? Stock fork is super heavy.
Tough find.
@@KevCentral can you do a tappered adapter on this?
I was looking for one but then they priced themselves out of a sale for me when they start getting in the the price range that competes with better known brands at the local bike shop. If they come back down to $500 or lower I would think about buying this again
18 inch frames are the sweet spot for my 5 foot 9.5 inch body. I think it is the same for you because 17 inch ones are kinda tight and 19 inch ones feel like a boat and it feels long. So 18 in for the win
Ever think about looking at entry level full suspension bikes?
The chain stay on that thing is fugly.
Have you seen the new all black gravel/road bike at Walmart?
Are you talking about the Huffy Carom?
@@KevCentral kent 700c Nazz
Are you ever gonna upgrade this? You definitely don't need to do much but If you can figure out a fork and brakeset you would have a super great riding bike!
Probably
@@KevCentral sweet, if I were you I would see if there is any sort of cane creek headset adapter so you can find a usable fork with the boost spacing.
The rear is standard QR
The 379 sale price is a steal!! Its specs are as good as my old giant talon... I paid $700, I still think the 600 is worth it.
For the fork, have you had luck finding and air fork to fit? Or would you have to buy a new wheel set too?
No luck with a fork so far
I think a lot of the price and availability has to do with Covid... I remember back in June when I was looking for a new bike, nothing was in stock and these were selling for over $1000-1200 in USED condition.
I got mine for a little under $600. A lot of money for a beginner bike, but needs almost no upgrades to be a reliable and fun trail bike.
Is it worth it to buy this bike for $600? Still seems fairly priced
Cool! keep riding and having fun :)
🤙🚲🚲
Wow. I need this bike! Would make a great gravel bike
This is a great bike. No way I could pay more after your deal. Im glad you got it going and updated but the price and availability mean this should be it's last appearance imo.
It will likely get some upgrades, so probably seen again soon
@@KevCentral it makes sense to cover it more from a content creators point of view. Especially since new bikes are hard to come by right now. My point is that this bike no longer fits the budget category that you cover.
Can we see the Cannondale Trigger 3 next?
keV love hear your take on some UK British big box bikes... Carrera vengeance..a fan London 😊💯
If I ever come across one
Ur the governor thanks for the reply channel just class keV
hey kev you should try sava deck 6.0 . its 600 dollar carbon mtb. you can order it from amazon or alibaba
Such a great deal! I've been wanting one of these for a while and can never catch it in stock...
Is it possible to add disc brakes if a bike has rim brakes
The fork needs mount points. Some frames - even bikes that come with rim brakes - have mounts for disc. Also, the wheel hubs need to have holes for the rotor bolts.
