(Isn't one of the ladies in the background one of the winners of the Chopin competition?) Not quite...compared to Lubyantsev, Hamelin slows down in the hard parts (var. 3 and 6 for example); while speeds up losing the tempo (in var 5) and making it at times murky and disjointed. Some subtle points are also missed in the Tema and var 10. (eg sustained notes; demi - semi quavers played as semi quavers). A nice performance nonetheless!
to the ears yes bcoz he speeds up at an impressive tempo making us love the music... I don't know abt the best in terms of technicality but there is just one or two parts blurred by the pedal. other than that I totally love it
i can’t get over the clarity of his playing. every note is played to perfection, clean and clear. you can just see all that hard work in his playing. i aspire to be like that one day, crazy he was only 19 when he played this. it’s still crazy to me that people like that exist.

I love the way he sticks to the sheet music playing that E longer (without pedal, passing the fingers) in the beginning. Never heard it like that before and it s so clean and amazing. In general, this must be the best interpretation I ve heard. Pure perfection

I studied at the Royal Northern College of Music from 2008-9, and I remember at that time watching this phenomenal pianist in the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition and being blown away! Still watch his videos to this day!

The melody itself is not from Liszt. Originaly this is a piece by Nicollo Paganini for Violin. Liszt just edited it for Piano.
I think he was referring the entire arrangement, not just the melody.
