The atmosphere, and the fact that this could actually happen in real life.
Well said!
And Micheal
That's the beauty of it all: simplicity. Besides, if it gets too complicated, you lose your target audience.

@@runarvollan bravo sir ! You nailed it
Its the soundtrack, and slow moving figure with the piano..dun.....dun dun.... Just plays on your nerves. Simplicity at its finest!
This guy gets it
I love not only this movie but also the passionate community around it.
There’s a lot to love about this movie. Thanks for watching !!
@@Talesfromtheshelf It's almost a spiritual experience :)
Halloween 1978 is my absolute favorite horror movie. I completely agree with you. Everything in this movie just came together brilliantly and created a horror masterpiece. The music score is so chilling, the lighting is fantastic and creates a very spooky mood and it really feels like Halloween, and also the acting is very good
In this movie. It is all believable and you also get to know the characters They aren’t just set up to be killed off. You actually care about the characters in this movie. Also there is little to no blood in this movie. It is just absolutely terrifying. The suspense is so intense. There are certain scenes that are so claustrophobic I found myself holding my breath. The jump scares get me every time. And the anticipation throughout is unbelievable. It is a real scary movie. It is a classic. And also I agree with you. The simplicity makes it scary, and also the biggest reason it scares me is because it is realistic. This is something that can actually happen. It is an over all great movie.
That’s exactly how I feel about it! Thanks for watching
Theatre of the mind. Especially the end with the shots of the empty house. Tell me he’s not dead without telling me he’s not dead
Exactly !
Also don't rule out the words he heard Laurie singing when he started stalking her. "I wish I had you all alone. Just the 2 of us.. "
It did end up just the two of them til Loomis shows up
Good point!! I’ve honestly never thought about it like that
@@TalesfromtheshelfFunny, too, because that was just an ad libbed line from JLC. Not even a real song.
i’ve actually watched this multiple times and i thinks it’s more tense than inherently terrifying
Fair enough !
i still absolutely love it fav movie ever for me
Imo Halloween and black Christmas (1974) are the best horror films ever made. Halloween is a masterpiece and holds up well. It was so good they couldn’t recapture that magic for the other films although I enjoy part 2 and the 2018 one. Micheal is the most interesting out of the entire genre due to not knowing his motive and the eerie mask and mannerisms. I wonder if John carpenter knew how influential this film would have been for the industry
Yeah Halloween is such a perfect film. I would agree on it being the most influential horror film
It is set in a typical middle class American neighborhood, which is assumed to be safe and away from the perils of the big cities.
This is a good point !
Great video and observations. For me it's always been about the atmosphere and mood, the mastersful union of camera work/angles, sound design/music, and lighting that have always elicted a real sense of foreboding that few if any other films in this subgenre of horror have for me.
I couldn’t agree more. Thank you for watching 🤝
There's nothing wrong with the Brother sister angle but Carpenter is the type of asshole who wants fans to like how He wants them to like.
beautifully said
Thank you! Thanks for watching !!
Used to scare me as a kid but by around 18 or 20 I grew out of it doesn't scare me anymore
That’s valid
I couldn't agree with you more. The original Halloween IS the best horror movie ever made. I can remember being six years old, watching it with my father the night it premiered on HBO. I can remember after Loomis emptied his pistol into Michael and he fell over the balcony, my old man saying "i bet he isn't there." And when he wasn't and John Carpenter's now iconic score kicked in...I was petrified.
Man that’s such an awesome memory! Thanks for sharing that with me. I appreciate you watching 🤝
Very nice explanations and interpretations man!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words!
Oh boy I been waiting for this one ☝️
Hope you enjoy bro 🫡
Just liked and subscribed because it's my favorite movie of all rime too!!!
Thank you !!
I’m not even certain that Michael sought out Laurie in particular as being his primary prey. Sure, he appeared to her when they were walking home from school, but that was only because they were passing by that house. And he no doubt was doing the same thing to others in his vicinity.
Let’s not forget that Michael first attacked Laurie when she went across the street to her friend’s house.
Solid theory but he appears outside her window by the laundry and outside her classroom so it’s definitely safe to say he has targeted Laurie.
I don't really care that much for Halloween II. IMO, Halloween 2018 was a better sequel. Also, this movie is by far my favorite horror movie. My uncle was the first in my family to own a VCR. He brought the movie over and we watched it as a family. Most terrifying movie I've ever seen and I have chased that sensation for the rest of my life. I have never found one that made me feel that way. To me, it's subtlety and simplicity is what makes it the best.
Man I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for watching and sharing that with me.
Strip the movie bare bones and its really just 1 man committing multiple home invasions with a butcher's knife in stealth ... Simple but ultimately horrifying as hell and really can happen.
Preach
The first time the “why” hit me was from movie 8mm. Absolutely got it and couldn’t handle it.
😅 What I am about to tell you is true. This movie spooks me so bad that Im 5min into your video, and I can't get through it. Something about your explanation of his mental state that adds more punch to my fear. I'll return when it's NOT 3am in the morning...😅....tiktoker G.A.TURKS
Haha well I’m sorry if I scared ya. Thanks for watching !
Slay
💅
I hate it when people watch this for the first time today and just crap on it. They just don't appreciate the art and craftsmanship.
@@fynnthefox9078 it can definitely be frustrating! You’re spot on
alright i take back some of the shit i was talking a couple weeks ago. i gotta watch this again
Eh your criticisms were all valid. I just think it does enough other dope stuff to counteract that stuff
You sum up every word and capture exactly why this is my personal favorite film of all time, perfectly, well said. It still touches my inner core, even after countless of times watched.
Nothing better than Halloween, rental, VHS, volume up.
There is something about the novel approach of it all, simple, score, white mask. 🎃 "It's Halloween. Everyone's entitled to one good scare."
You get it!! Thanks for watching 🤝
I think Halloween II is better than 2018
That’s valid
As for the mediocrity of the sequels, I agree 100%. I think it speaks to the problem of film franchises in general. If they do more of the same, it feels unnecessary. If they take wild swings and expand lore or backstories, there’s the big risk that it will disappoint fans. It really seems to me like a lose-lose from the standpoint of quality
That’s the truth man. Too much money on the line so artistic integrity gets compromised
It is often thought that simple filmmaking is synonymous with simple-minded filmmaking, but this is false. None other than Steve Jobs opined that he had to work hard to get his thinking clean and simple, and that simple is often harder to create than complex. Making art that is confusing, unnecessarily complicated, disjointed, or superfluous is quite easy. It's why writing a coherent sentence with ten words is harder to construct than with twenty, and why the term “misunderstood masterpiece” was created. John Carpenter’s Halloween is indeed “simple”, and it also reflects a staggering degree of cinematic intelligence and skill.
Couldn’t agree more
Pete Davidson?
Yeah, I know you're not really Pete Davidson. But you do kind of look like him. Not to be rude, of course.
@@GreenPencil305 I get that a lot
Halloween is not scary it's a stupid dumb movie that is way overrated and overhyped. and gets way to much credit when its a stupid terrible movie with no good plot at all. It has alot of contradictions and terrible acting to it. not only that but the movie gets to much credit for acting like it revolutionized the slasher genre when it did not. and it even plagiarized and stole off of other slasher movies that came before it such as. the town that dreaded sundown, black christmas, and the texas chainsaw massacre
But people like to say friday the 13th is a rippoff. witch is funny to me becouse halloween is a blatant riploff of the horror moves i just stated
😂
It’s only scary because of the music. It got panned in pre screening without music. It’s an overrated film
That’s like saying food is only good because of the ingredients lol
Because it bleedin well isn't scary it's dumb and silly ...
Hey thanks for watching man. Sorry you disagree
Actually, there's no bleedin' at all.
"Why Is Halloween (1978) So Scary?" It isn't. It's boring.
@@backforblood3421 thanks for watching !
It was decent for a movie made in 1978.
@@Jay-n262 I'm not a Gen Z person criticizing how boring it is. I'm 43, and I used to like the movie very much, back when the matter of my parents having been about the same age as the babysitters was a point of interest to me, which it no longer is given that I've discovered who and what my parents really are.
6 TIMES!!
