Thank you so much for making this review. Love these video's with you. Very informative, to the point, professional. Deserves way more views! Keep it up guys!!
In the low light test, the flower next to the girl's face was more detailed on Sony @ 3200 iso and more detailed on Panasonic @ 6400 iso. Is it a slight focusing error or maybe the Panasonic sensor is one of those "dual native iso" and somewhere between 3200 and 6400 is the higher "native" one?
You guys did a great job in your review and youtube video report. It appears this will be a gret full frame Lumix Camera. The change for me will be going from Micro 4/3rds to a full frame. We shall see where this trips goes. Regardless you did and informative report about the camera's capabilities as well as it's potential and other issues. Bravo, good luck, and keep ypur reports coming. They are very much apprecaited by me. All my best!
What camera did you shoot with in this video? That strobe/judder at 4:37-4:42, is it really common to all 4K footages of all modern cameras? Happens even when complying with the 180deg rule. Does not happen in 1080.
I'm still excited for the S1. I hope the V-Log update arrives at the same time of the official release date. Personally, I'm not concerned about the AF performance. Most of the time I use MF with AF assist on my GH5. Although I can see instances where a reliable AF would be preferable. It's just not a deal breaker for me. At the moment, I'm still happy with my GH5. I've been able to capture fantastic footage with it. So, I'm happy sticking with Panasonic for now.
I have a m43 and used a FF. Trust me, you will always love the m43 but the image quality on a FF sensor is noticeably better. More DR and low light performance.
From my tests. The HLG DR is incredibly close to Vlog DR. (11.5 stops in GH5) So I think you are showing what it can do here. Regardless of no vlog yet. Thanks for info. No surprise there with contrast defect focus.
Great video! thanks for sharing your thoughts on this camera. Do you recall if you're able to use the PIP manual focus assist whilst video recording is in progress? The lack of this feature is very annoying with the GH5 and GH5s. Thanks!
Good video and analysis. 3:50 - more useful to compare usage duration rather than just battery power capacity - the S1 will draw a lot more power than say a G9.
Thanks so much for such a well done video. Very helpful. Please, if you don't mind, I have a few questions. Thank you so much for bringing up the use of a canon (or other lens) adapter! I have been searching all morning to see if there are lens adapters for this camera, this video is the only thing I've seen that even talks about that possibility. Hopefully in the near future they will have some that work without being buggy.
1:48 i know you are referring to Sony a7iii. Totally agree with you, that a7iii port covers really suck. And I dont see any physical or design constraints why they were done like that. Anyway thanks for sharing.
I was surprised to see the S1 beating the A7III in low light :). It was maybe on par with the A7sII... I hate the noise reduction in camera, I preffer to have grain and remove it in post if needed... BTW good review!
The best review sofar on this camera on RUclips in my opinion. Just one question; is there any information about whether or not we can record into an SSD via the USB port on the camera?

I'm surprised they spoke about the focusing considering this is a pre-production camera with pre-production firmware. The DPReview guys said they can't talk about it yet (because it's not finished). Strange this was put in. Honestly this review seems way too early.
@@BrennanMartin I don't think anyone should ever be hopeful for Panasonic to ever fix autofocus performance. Well in the candlelight test, the A7III colors are just garbage. The Panasonic looks fine for pre-production which unfortunately makes this limited in usefulness. They really should have had firmware buttoned up by now but oh well. Vloggers are the ONLY group that benefits from a screen that flips forward, which I get their need but for everyone else this is better. They are saying there will be 12 bit out thru HDMI with the upgrade but have not seen any kind of details on that. Overall decent review.
I so agree with you about the screen articulation. The problem is that vloggers have a lot of influence with camera makers these days, and their needs tend to skew what the majority of camera users really want. For my own part, I hate flip-out screens with a vengeance. If a vlogger needs to see him/herself, get an Atomos or some such, the cheapskates!

It'd be interesting to see whether this with 10 bit and log profile, the Nikon Z6 with ProRes RAW or other top end hybrid cams match up against independent cinema workhorses like the C300, FS7, EVA-1 etc in image quality. Can their larger sensors and the advent of pro level codecs in these cameras make them a match?
Do you see a noise reduction +/- option like the GH5/GH5-S has. I run my GH5 with noise reduction pulled all the way back. I'd rather record more detail (and more noise) and pull that noise out more surgically in post.
The Fuji-style articulation is the strongest form-factor from an engineering factor (this was a stated design-objective) and the lens-aligned axis suits stills photography, but it seems likely that Panasonic will make an SX1 or S10 eventually with a selfie-screen and lower price-point given their G series camera strategy - though probably not as quickly.
The Autofocus / size make this camera impractical for vlogging. I would never recommend this for vlogging. Sony & Canon make much better camera choices for it! Jake
Really awesome camera and progressive features and functions. I could easily see myself switching from Sony to Panasonic if it wouldn’t suck at continuous AF, wich is, you know, like the most important feature in a camera. This would stress me out in important and time critical situations. Come on Panasonic, just put in phase detect AF.
Disagree on a flipout screen not being a requirement. If you're used to the Sony A7, you won't miss it. If you've ever used the GH4/GH5 for any decent amount of time you *will definitely* miss it. The GH5's VLog was $100 FWIW...I'd expect this one to cost at least that... Did you need the S1's higher ISO? Looked like the restaurant was well lit...
@@activatehalo7763 photographers use low angles or high angles... Used to use an angle finder with an old film camera. It's not just for vloggers.... 😛
Dammit. Was so hoping for this camera. But backwards articulating screen, 4k crop @60fps, and 30 minute limit is a deal breaker. Oh well I guess I'll keep on waiting..
Such an awesome video, thank you CVP for caring about your customers. Extremely promising camera, well worth the money but I'm gonna keep on waiting for the Sony a7siii...
we really need to harp on the AF ability and push Panasonic to produce an AF system that can produce fast or slow accurate focus pulls like DPAF, and accuracy and reliability like EYE AF
I know the video shooters are less impressed with this camera. For stills, if it's anything like the G9 (considering the looks and features are similar) then this camera looks outstanding. Only issue is the AF. While not bad, its just not as good as some other cameras.

@@CVPTV Wonder how it will be like with the full v log, it's going to be 14+ stops of dynamic range, so that's going to be interesting.
The monstro shows much much much more detail in the shadows! Jake
We shall see!
Great review.
Carlos ...but not so great camera after all.
??? You watched the same review I watched ?
Excellent run down of the features! Its a pity they haven't resolved the slow AF. Everything else seems amazing.
Its cant be a review without the final Firmware! Its a preview..
Below IS0 800 Sony A7III looks better S1 Looks better for me above ISO 800 up to 3200 . Why ? Please explain
cant w8 for the full review after the update...
I would love to see a hlg video
Your 2-measure background-music loop is too irritating to tolerate.
I would love a video on HLG!
Do you see a noise reduction +/- option like the GH5/GH5-S has. I run my GH5 with noise reduction pulled all the way back. I'd rather record more detail (and more noise) and pull that noise out more surgically in post.
I couldn't find one in the menu. When we get our production unit I will check it. Jake
We need the lonear focus, improved autofocus, and improved stabilization for the GH5
Great overview, but someone clearly didn't watch this uploading. Lots of weird transitions and not fully scaled b-roll over the main part of the video
WORST SCREEN DESIGN and OVERPRICED and BAD RECORD BUTTON. Thanks for the great review! 😃
TOP COMMENT and FANTASTIC CHANNEL NAME and APPRECIATE YOUR FEEDBACK. Thanks for the great comment :)
What's with all the hate bro. I've seen you're comments in all panasonic s1 reviews
you should do a word of the day lesson on the word HATE you wanker
Why is slow motion jerky? it looks like every x amounts of frames it get stuck for a split second
Pair firmware update. I appreciate Fujifilm's free and continued firmware updates.
Do you think its too bulky and big and heavy?
Not at all! Jake
think youtube people will start using it for vlogging or they'll stick to Sony?@@CVPTV
The Autofocus / size make this camera impractical for vlogging. I would never recommend this for vlogging. Sony & Canon make much better camera choices for it! Jake
Does Panasonic S1 have APS-C?
As in an APS-C Mode?
I'd very much like a dedicated video on HLG; the process for delivery in HDR formats seems pretty arcane to me.
S1 have pd 3.0 quick charge?v
Really awesome camera and progressive features and functions. I could easily see myself switching from Sony to Panasonic if it wouldn’t suck at continuous AF, wich is, you know, like the most important feature in a camera. This would stress me out in important and time critical situations. Come on Panasonic, just put in phase detect AF.
Please make video on HLG, please🤩
Why is the hurry for?
You can slow the video down on RUclips if I speak to fast for you. Jake
You got the Nikon Z mount measurements wrong.
Why everyone is saying that XQD costs too much? A slower, UHS-II SD card is 10-30% more expensive than XQD
Thanks for a great overview! Sadly the paid firmware update makes it really hard to know what to expect from this camera.
No flippy screen? 😕
Are you a vlogger? No?
Then it's not a requirement
@@activatehalo7763 photographers use low angles or high angles... Used to use an angle finder with an old film camera.
It's not just for vloggers.... 😛
@@kenyee88 The S1 has a flip screen. It can do that
Whats that on your chin?
I know the video shooters are less impressed with this camera. For stills, if it's anything like the G9 (considering the looks and features are similar) then this camera looks outstanding. Only issue is the AF. While not bad, its just not as good as some other cameras.
