Yes, I find borax crystals tend to form a bit smaller. These large crystals are cool. I love making crystals although it’s been a while since I made some last. With the borax, I found that by keeping the solution warmer longer, by draping a towel over the container to insulate, more crystals grew. This for sharing

Julie, that's so cool. You can also do this with borax. If you just stick a string in it, you'll get a string of crystals, and you could use for the edge of your molds.

This is You grew some huge crystals in no time! Can’t wait for the borax crystals.
Maybe if you weigh the same volume of plain water then weigh the water / solution that’s leftover you can then add more aluminum sulfate to equal your weight recipe at the start. The plain water shouldn’t weigh the same as the leftover solution. So the extra weight is alum .

Thanks for the memories. I wonder if they can be set in resin? If they could, that would preserve them because if I remember rightly they do eventually dissolve.

So beautiful! I wonder if the solution would take dye, so the crystals could be pink or blue or...?? :)
You can re-use your water in one of two ways. One, heat the water back up and slowly add powder until it stops dissolving. This will have lowered them temp, of course. Heat it back up again and add just a little bit more powder. Once it stops dissolving AND the water is completely hot, you are as saturated as possible. Time to grow your crystal.
The other way would be to make your recipe as normal first, then weigh it, water and powder. Note how much is in your cup (volume) as well. After you have made your first round, put the cup back on the scale and add powder until the weight is nearly correct, then check the level of the water. Add some if needed, then add more powder to bring it to the correct weight. It may take some experimenting to get it right where you like it, but it doesn't need to be completely precise.
