You're totally right. I think grading is harming this community as much as it did the comic collecting community. I believe in preservation of art, but that shouldn't separate us from the enjoyment of it or jack up prices to where everything we're attempting to collect is unreasonably listed. These are factors beyond our control and they're ridiculous.
Exactly! Preservation of art is what it's all about, but these grading companies have become a problem as far as I'm concerned. We just got to show are support for what we love the best ways we can.
I think that mostly started with currency and sports cards? Or do they grade & slab Postage Stamps too?
Though at least with those items you're not 'losing' anything by having it 'slabbed', since they only have 2 sides. It starts to get funny when you get to comic book grading, since slabbing a comic book prevents you from being able to READ the damn thing! lol
@@FanZceneVids I've heard about grading vintage Kenner Star Wars action figures, which I'm not happy about, but this along with action figure grading is probably a scam!
@@FanZceneVids Do you see any conflict between your statement that “preservation of art is what it’s all about,” and opening that sealed copy at the end of your video? The two seem at odds to me.
I wouldn’t have opened that tape. If I wanted a copy to look and and/or watch, I would have sought out another one on the cheap and kept that one sealed...for preservation.
@@StreetPreacherr If you read the damn thing, you damage the damn thing. As Greg said, preserve the art. There are other ways to read that issue without laying hands on that preserved copy.
I think this is why it's so important to trawl all of the thrift stores, garage sales, etc. You can sometimes find those rarities for dirt cheap. I bought a sealed copy of "The Crowd" for .25 (and it never had a DVD, Blu-ray, etc. release.) Sometimes you can just be at the right place at the right time and save a few grand LOL And you should have yelled "KHAAN!" as you opened the video...
That's something I should've talked more about in this video. Thrift stores and yard sales can help big time in finding VHS tapes that are rare or hard to find. Nice find! I totally should of yelled Khan, dang why didn't I think of that.

I completely support grading. Something is worth whatever someone else is willing to pay for it. Props to whomever was able to score $75,000 for what is, in most people’s eyes, a near worthless piece of plastic, and props to whomever had the disposable income to be able to happily spend that on the movie.
As far as I’m concerned, this could potentially drive up prices. Great! Let that happen. It will be short lived. Sellers will raise prices out of false perceptions, sales of tapes will come to a near a reaching halt, and then prices will again plummet to what the rest of the average collector market feels are appropriate. The market will normalize. These little bubbles do burst once sellers realize the demand isn’t there with prices outside reach of those not of the elite collector sect.
The only way I see a VHS selling for a lot of money is it's rarity that means not that many were made or it's never been released on anything else but VHS so it's stuck in the VHS world so no way you can watch it is to buy this for what price that's up to you
Totally agree, if a VHS is the only way to watch a film and is rare is the only reason it could have a high price tag. The VHS graders are making people think there unrare tapes are worth more than they are, it's crazy.
"Great topic" FanZene, finally someone is bringing this topic up, I've been following these auctions on VHS tapes and just recently a few weeks ago, I watched the Heritage Auction on VHS tapes, what I'd like to know is who are these people that can afford 10,000 thru $50,000 tapes. Did I miss a class in High School on this, lol !! I think alot of these people are living off the parent's scratch !! And your absolutely right these tapes are way over valued, there's a RUclips channel that promotes VHS grading and selling called, tales from the flip side, and host and guest's just salivating over the price of VHS tapes and promote Auctions, it's insane. Keep up the great work FanZcene !!
Thank you Kurt! I don't know where these people get the money lol. The fact a channel is promoting these auctions and the prices are ridiculous and part of the problem.
Same shady grifters at Heritage who price fixed sealed NES games over the last couple years to basically pay themselves and their rich buddies.
Popular movies selling for high amounts has nothing to do with if there's a better dvd/blu-ray copy out there. It's a collectible item, just like a like Action Comics #1, you are not supposed to read it, it's just a historical artefact. Star Wars is extremely common on VHS, but finding a SEALED copy from 1982 or 1983 is extremely hard. They never pop up on Ebay and only a handful known copies exist. If people want to invest in video games, comics, vhs or whatever instead of stocks and more traditional assets, then go for it.
I'm all preservation, but slabbing VHS tapes of all things is an absolute perversion of the hobby. On the flip size, there's so many sealed copies of Ghostbusters out there that they'll eventually flood the market & cannibalize themselves. This is a problem that's gonna go away on it's own when 200 Graded tapes for Dorf Goes Fishing never sell.
It's funny because I literally see that happening with these VHS grader companies, and tapes like Dorf. Just like the Disney Diamond editions everyone thought were worth thousands, and they aren't worth anything.

First of all, I appreciate the video and the great points you've made, thanks. I must say, how on earth is VHS collecting becoming an expensive hobby? I do understand the price of rare movies that never got a release on DVD or Blu-Ray, but for everything else, it's not like with music with vinyl vs digital, where there are tangible reasons you may want to listen to the sound and tonality that a record has. There is no real reason to watch a VHS over a modern format. The only sense is to collect and display them for their physical appearance, and I don't see them as being substantial different and cooler with how they display compared to a modern DVD case, besides knowing that it's an old and dead retro format, that can bring nostalgia. They don't offer value for modern day real-world movie watching usage, and because of that, the value of VHS tapes should really stay considerably lower than other retro collections.
You do make fair points yourself. However much like anything that is retro and becomes collectible, it doesn't matter to the collector if something modern is better. When people start collecting, no matter what it is, the prices go up because a new market of profitability is born. With VHS tapes these grading companies have skyrocketed the prices of certain tapes effectively making it harder for collectors. In some cases VHS tapes are still cheap, it all really depends on multiple factors.
The only reason to watch a movie is because you want to. That’s the only reason that also applies to how you choose to watch it.
I don't collect VHS nowadays but that's really sucks if you ask me i will never pay that much of money for Nostalgia 😑
Completely get that my friend. I won't pay that much either. Collecting what you love can be expensive but the VHS grading is getting crazy.

VHS tapes were never designed to be investment grade assets.
the mcdonalds back to the future copy sealed goes for between 20-30 $ , theres alot out there but i dont think thats a crazy price , the price factor in something like that would only be if it were to be graded and it receives a perfect or highest graded copy out there , but by that logic that applies to comics , cards , games anything , all that sounds normal to me , if you are a graded collector in any category high or highest graded copy of anything always goes for x amount more
My suggestion to you dude is to stop buying any VHS tapes now and wait for the market to completely die. It's all speculative bubble crap like everything else and people are going to be stuck with plastic junk they paid thousands for. And you got a like for opening that tape at the end.

Grading and speculation ruins collecting...I collect movies (mostly Blu-ray and DVD) casually but I used to be really into retro game collecting and about 10 years ago it got too expensive for me because of the grading and scalping side of things...really sucks that I lost this thing I loved doing because I could no longer afford to participate. I kept hoping the bubble would burst but prices never really returned to sane levels and I learned to be ok with emulation. It sucks that these simple pleasures of collecting and cherishing cheap things that you genuinely enjoy always get invaded by parasites looking to leech off of the community.
I couldn't agree more with you. It truly sucks whether it's VHS or game collecting, someone has always got to parasite.
I have a copy of a price list a now defunct retro game store called Funcoland used to put out every quarter or so in their stores. It was put together like a newspaper and also acted like a checklist for titles, all arranged by console. I think it’s from January 1998, the last time I visited that store before moving out of the area.
The prices on NES titles would absolutely blow your mind if you could see them compared to today. The first time I walked out of that store I had a huge bag full because of how affordable these games were during the height of the N64 and PlayStation.
Hard To Die is a grail.
I think It’s very wrong that people are trying to charge a lot of money for things other people need to survive. Be better and sell you vhs cheap, so other people can keep breathing.
