These hipsters are a scourge to good collectors, not even just because they're vile to everyone, they come up with the most unfunny memes/inside jokes that no one gives a flying fuck about and they are clearly desperate to be internet famous but they have zero respect for filmmakers and the films they purport to be collecting. These people treat these tapes like a trendy handbag, not like a medium they are trying to preserve because many of these films are stuck in obscurity. The lack of sincerity is apparent when you talk to them about films, because all they care about is "labels", not movies. They treat it like a competition and that's part of the problem. People have been buying films forever, there's no such thing as owning the "wrong" tapes except according to these eggheads who only want to own the same tapes as everyone else because they're insecure and are using this hobby they discovered the other day to mask their shortcomings. This is what happens when you turn something that's a hobby into some sort of financial investment to impress strangers.

I totally get where ur coming from, I checked out ur stuff since Slasher Index and always found u to be a great resource when coming to VHS. Being a collector of VHS it sucks that a lot of non real collectors are flooding the scene, their pretty much doing it as a trendy thing no real dedication. Keep up the great work

I know this is an old video, but I have been watching you since you first started making videos. I have watched you grow up on camera. I have always admired how you carried yourself, and did your videos, and made your website. I am much older than you, and have long since sold my VHS collection, but I enjoy your passion, and your reviews. I know you really mean what you say, and are very passionate about this format, and these films. Keep doing what you are doing. I collect cassette tapes, and I have a label, that sells Metal on that format, people will always shoot you down, when you are trying to achieve your dreams. Keep on keepin' on, Paul. Your fans know you are the real deal!!

I'm right there with you on the hipsters, man. It's bad enough that they collect for the wrong reasons, but they also think it should be some kind of special club and if they decide you're not "one of them", they can be the biggest douchebags in the world. I've had to leave multiple retrogaming forums because they were overrun with these asshats, so I know exactly how you feel.
I grew up with VHS so there is some element of nostalgia for me, but these days, when I happen to pick up some tapes it's usually something random, like my last batch included a couple of obscure B-movies, a James Cagney flick and a CNN tape about the 2000 election. No rhyme or reason, I just snag tapes that look interesting when I come across them. I'm sure there are people who would say I'm "doing it wrong", but those people take this stuff way too seriously.

You don't need to justify what you're doing, mate. Keep at it. I've been a fan since Slasher Index and catch your vids from time to time. I'm not a VHS collector really, but I'm a major horror fan and I enjoy the window into something cool. I've always admired the artwork that set VHS apart. It really was its own era and I loved that time. I respect what you're doing and I hope you keep at it. If people are giving you crap, it means you're making an impact and you should keep moving forward. I'll contribute some cash when I can, rock on!

I tried a VHS collector's group. Before I could continue a discussion I had started, they decided to give me hostile responses. I think it's a waste of time to engage with people like that.

very important to archive these VHS, a lot of them are just trashed I had over 100 in the early 90's, all of them are long gone. A lot of the companies that released them have no history of the tapes and the art that they made as the companies are either gone or changed ownership so many times and there was no reason to take photos on a wind up disposable camera then wait for the kodak film to take a photo of some cover art back then. A lot of the physical tapes have worn out been lost in time.

Bro i use to love Slasher index .com & i remember Crazy mexican haha, I have always thought of you as the first guy to get VHScollecting on the Map, & It is very sad how people act in those groups, People railed me bad & even started a page about me called Scarlet fry fans unite which was a hate page, I was told i didn't know shit about VHS LOL, Funny cause i was working for Camp before half of these hipsters were born, & in video stores in the 80's. I was a Horror Nut then & I still am, even though I don't have the collection a lot of the guys have I can gaurantee I have had every Horror VHS pass through my hands at one time or another, and for people to bad mouth you is surprising cause you were the first man, You are the guy that got me back into it, yrs ago & i keep seeing these vhs just go from 5 bucks to 20 to 75 overnight & its sad, i agree with you 100% and wish i had time to scan stuff and contribute to vhs collector.com . Anyways your right these hipsters are out of control and i hardly deal with those groups anymore either, as far as other formats your right about that too, Ive dealt a lot with CED videodiscs lately and those groups dont act like children. More power to you brotha.

8:16 It costs so much because it requires skill and takes awhile. Something as nice as what you have now can take weeks to create. Even at $20 per hour ($40K per year salary), the developer isn't making much since he still has to pay for taxes and medical insurance. Just because it sounds easy, doesn't mean it is easy.

I'm like most are used to have a lot of VHS tapes years ago and then upgraded to DVD. Now I am downgrading back to VHS as a collector this time I'm not evil emanating my DVD's whatsoever but I'm acquiring in purchasing VHS tapes because I'd like to have a collection of tapes in films that are not readily available on DVD. Most VHS will never be converted to DVD and those are the titles that I look for. Please don't stop doing what you do to hell with those who are so self absorbed that they can't see the good in anyone.

I love horror movie. I loved see the horror section back in the vhs days and do like the old Vhs. Don't so much of a collector of Vhs format anymore; just dvds and blue ray. The old vhs horror do look cool though. I like listening to your passion on horror. I am in some of those groups but don't go to those ones much. I go to the horror lovers group not the VHS ones now. I understand your appreciation that Vhs played in releasing these movies. Soap Operas are stupid, but I know I don't try and act like that.

I grew up with VHS. I collect tapes, and its a hobby I enjoy alongside retro games and vinyl collecting. But I barely go on forums and group sites anymore, because theyre mostly full of hipsters and hostile, insecure idiots pretending to love VHS collecting just to fit in. Its a fun hobby and interest but with every hobby or community, you'll always have posers, trolls and joyless fools there to ruin it for everyone else.

I wonder, is it because the scene is relatively young? Could explain the sheer rudeness. But what's funny is that when I was apart of older movie circles, there was slight drama but people were never rude to you or tried to attack you personally. The people who started drama didn't last long and no one tolerated their BS. It just seems like people are just doing the most because at the end of the day, they're basic and boring. Memes are not a bad thing, but there's no reason to make it personal, and most of the jokes and memes in the groups just aren't funny and no one cares. It's just try hard bullshit. It's sad that it's devolved into very insecure people trying to put down others to feel better.
I would say that I'm in it for the same reasons you are: the format has historical significance and being a gigantic movie buff, I'm just trying to preserve and hunt what's not available on DVD. If everyone remembered why they were in it at the end of the day, which is to see movies they otherwise can't see, then they'd mellow out and be way more nice to their fellow videovores.
