When Ive done transplants and had the same issue, It sometimes works dropping off the gearbox x member or brackets and settling the gearbox onto a cradle/jack, just gives you some wiggle room with the alignment. Input shaft a light smear of grease.
Great content as ever! You’ll love the conversion and you’ll never want anything else in a defender! Power, torque, refinement, fits the engine bay like it’s meant to be there (unlike the tdci), reliability, tunability. Yes, they’re all a bit old now but if you go over them and replace all the bits that suffer with age they’ll keep on going and keep making you smile! Some really lovely work going on, great video work and I like the 'OEM' ambition. Just so right. But I have to say my OCD threw a wobblie when you left that fuel filter open to the aluminium dust, engine cleaner and pressure jet debris. I am sure it was just an oversight but I wouldn't want that debris getting pushed up into the BMW high pressure system and injectors. Great project though.

Hey Guys, great video. I was wondering If tou would do such a engine swap for a german LHD Defender? Would that be possible and how can we get in touch?
all good you said you wanted to go with OEM as much as you could but you filled rubber fuel lines not hard wall lines which i know can be tricky to fit but less problems, di you fit a cover over the fuel pump and filter it looked very exposed under the rear wheel arch ?
How comes you went for keeping the LR gearbox rather than attaching a BMW gearbox to the LT230? Is it more simple? I would love to do this with my TD5 90
It’s way easier to connect it to the manual TDCi box as well as retaining manual, and a completely OEM look to the cabin! Will show you guys an auto swap next year
J/M. Was there any consideration to lift the 3.2ltr 5-cylinder turbo diesel engine from a U.K. 2011-onwards Ford Ranger ? It uses a similar 6 speed manual gearbox which would bolt straight up mista ! V.
It’s a much larger task (and more expensive) to install the Ranger 3.2 TDCi not to mention it still doesn’t compete with the BMW engines reliability, refinement or power & torque figures! This engine is a wonderful unit!
Could you tell me wich milwaukee impact wrench ur using in the video? I’ve been looking to buy one but don’t know wich one to go for and yours looks really good
New to this channel. Absolutely loving the content on here and the way it's delivered. Really considering this engine swap in place of a 300tdi- although I'm not sure on serviceability of a bmw engine in Australia. Keep up the awesome work!
Very interesting, will love to see how it performs. I take it that the V-6 motor will not fit in that engine bay. I have two TD-5 powered Defenders, my son has a Defender with the Puma engine. For what ever reason I just do not like the Puma, probably the sound it makes!
The JLR V6 diesel (in both 2.7L and 3.0L) will fit in the engine bay quite easily, it's just that they're not cheap because there's a constant demand for replacements when the engines fail. They are ultimately not as robust as the BMW M57 engine, and there certainly isn't the aftermarket support for them conversion-wise.
It must have been very frustrating exercise fitting the engine and it wouldn’t go in … here in SA 2.8 bmw engines were factory fitted on defenders and are still are very popular and sought after
Glad you cleaned the engine bay! So many youtube builders just bolt stuff in without doing so and I find it a bit lazy! Keep up the good work!
Loving the build but I have a question, will the indicators still work with the BMW engine fitted?
Certainly will!
