Thanks Ian, I’ll keep that in mind, I’ll see how this set up works out, if it’s not up to it, I may look into a different transmission and adaptor!! What’s the best way for people to contact you?
Looking forward to see your project progress. I love the M57 engines and cant think of anything better for a Defender. Thinking about doing this myself once all the other project are done that is 🤣.
I've got a quick question for you guys, if you was thinking of starting the project from scratch where would you start chassis wise?. So many options have gone through my head, but what direction is the best start. Because if your chopping the engine mounts about and re welding ones that marry to the M57 lump, what's better?, A 300 110 chassis or Td5 or newer!?. Or do they physically fabricate a 110 chassis that's designed to drop the M57 straight in giving you a head start, I understand you have to give the gearbox and bell housing a thought in all this? Sorry to waste your time guys, but was interested in your thoughts!
If I could start again and if I had space, I would do a body off build. Or at least remove the front end completely. As far as chassis go, it wouldn’t really matter to me which one I use as id fabricate new mounts anyways. In fact, my 300tdi mounts are still there, I am using one of them as a ground terminal! What I would recommend doing though I’d giving everything a good once over before your conversion, by that I mean wheel bearings, propshafts, transfer cases and transmission, disk breaks, pads and break lines! The m57 will bring up and issues or weak points real fast!! take it from me😂
Thanks guys!! We’ll find out soon, the only thing I can see it doing is maybe reducing vibrations when it’s idling and not moving but at the same time, it’s a very smooth engine so it’s hard to say. I put a lot of time into fabricating caution engine mounts for them so I’m hoping they do something 😂

Hey mate. Thanks for the advice! You know I was tempted to make a custom manifold for this but time is against me at the moment as it's my daily driver 😅 I'll definitely try and do that with the AC pump. Even if I do mange to find a good spot for it, my 90 doesn't have AC so it would mean a retrofit which I'm not sure I'll do with this one. @@KeepitBigBore yes, or perhaps a previous owner had removed them from yours or it was before them (but fairly sure they were there from the outset of the 57). Who knows but main thing is they aren’t there now!
The hoses weren’t the best when the engine was in the 530d but I installed new hoses all round when I dropped it in the defender. I wouldn’t say it’s laggy or anything but adjusted my vacuum actuator recently to experiment with it and I seemed to be getting an over boost or something. I know the ecu will go into limp mode of over boost is detected and it will reset when you start the engine again but it doesn’t go into limp mode, it just miss fires for a couple seconds and it’s fine. Only happened in first or second gear when floored. I thought maybe a boost leak or valve float, haven’t looked in to it yet. I’ve just turned the actuator adjustment back to where it was for now!!
Great video, I'd be interested in seeing the final product. I'll be doing my defender engine swap to M57 so these videos will come in handy. I'd however like you advice on the best M57D30 engine to get. A friend mentioned that I should get the 2005 engine as it has no computer in it hence making wiring easy. What's your opinion on the same?
Hi Eric, I haven’t heard of the 2005 not having a computer. This one is a 1999 and it has an ecu and automatic transmission control, so 2 computers! This is the cast iron block m57, I think the aluminium block come out in 2003, it was a bit more powerful, it was lighter and it had a few more sensors so there’s a little more wiring but nothing that should turn you off. Just make sure it’s the 3.0l version, the early ones supposedly came in 2.5 but were still called “m57”. All in all, the 3.0l (2.926cc) m57 started in 1998 I think and ran all the way up to 2013, they are all great engines so for me, the deciding factor would be whichever year I could get the best deal on 😬 Good luck with the swap, feel free to send me some pics on Instagram 👍🏽
I’m no expert on the auto conversions as I haven’t done one yet but as far as I know there are no external speed sensors needed. There are a few ways of doing the auto, some people Retain the original transmission control unit and others use an aftermarket! I guess it depends on your engine/transmission choice!
Hi Patrick, the cable throttle will no longer be in use, you would have to find a way of mounting the electronic throttle from the BMW in the footwell. You can then mount it directly to the throttle pedal. You other option is to mount the potentiometer from the BMW electronic throttle in the engine bay somewhere an then run a cable to this from the pedal as I have seen others do. The 3rd option I have heard of people doing is to use the throttle pedal from a BMW Mini. I will be using the throttle from the 530d and I will try to mount it to the pedal in the footwell area or on the bulkhead in the engine bay. Good Luck!!
It depends what you want I guess. The 184 is a simple, reliable and easy to get engine but the newer ones are more powerful, slightly lighter, have good automatic and manual transmissions, it all depends one what power and what transmission you want to use 👍🏽
I didn’t know at the time, I just assumed they all had them, it’s the first thing that comes up in conversation when you mention m57 😂. Thanks for the tip 👍🏽
Hi mate, she’s holding up just fine!! The only thing I would do different is make a custom fork shaft for the p38 bell housing as the original one I’m sure has twisted a bit which meant I had to make a custom push rod for the slave cylinder which had to be a bit longer. Other than that she’s holding up just fine, I’ve done about 40k miles in it now and I haven’t been easy on it 😂
Hi I am fitting one of these engines in a discovery 1 I have kept the fuel pump from the tank and from under the passenger floor will the engine run with just the under floor pump or do I need to fit both pumps thanks Richard.
I see no reason why not 😬 if you can get an adaptor to match the pajero transmission to the m57 then it should be easy enough. The other option is to use a BMW manual transmission and get an adaptor to match it to the pajero transfer case! Get in touch with Max at Wisemans engineering on Facebook. He said he had 2 pajero adaptors about a month ago. Send him a message and see if they’re still there. Good luck, let me know how it goes 👍🏽
