  • Unfolding over three compelling feature-length episodes, this sci-fi classic is brilliantly realised through powerful performances and stunning visuals from Oscar© winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now).
Frank Herbert's highly acclaimed 1974 sci-fi novel is stunningly realised in this four-and-a-half hour miniseries produced by the Sci-Fi Channel.William Hurt stars as Duke Leto Atreides, charged to rule the desolate planet Arrakis, the universe's only source of Melange, a spice that enhances mental performance and makes interstellar travel possible.
But soon Leto's bitter enemy, the evil Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Ian McNeice), a former ruler, wins back Arrakis and hands power to his brutal nephew, Rabban. When the Atreides family escape into the inhospitable desert with the help of the Fremen, a race of displaced desert nomads - the strengthening power of Melange enables Paul (Alec Newman), the Duke's son, to organise the oppressed Fremen and wage war on the Empire.
    Director: John Harrison
Cast: William Hurt, Alan Newman, Ian McNeice

Before there was Game of Throne, I can appreciate the SCIFI Channel attempt in expanding the material of Dune Saga by introducing the political & religious intrigue of the Frank Herbert novels in the proper form as a mini-series. While the production design is inferior to the David Lynch (1984) version, and limitation to it as well as some poor cast selection, the Children of Dune is a far superior version in production and cast in comparison and musical score. Nevertheless, it is a classic in itself with some of its visuals. I always loved the Sandworm Rescue sequence of it not only diving into the desert sand in the background as they stand in the foreground but also it about to swallow the ornithopter.

@@martiat6310 ok since you're looking for an answer here's why Dune 2020 (now 2021) is going to be epics.
The all star cast with talented actors who David Dastmalchian (Piter Devries) who is also a Dune fan said this is as close to the book as you'll get. Even Denis Villeneuve referenced the book and Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson on what to do next on some scenes.
He's staying as true as he can to the movie (aside from the casting choice for Liet Kynes).

I have a soft spot got this series. It’s laughably bad in terms of costumes , sets , acting etc and special effects look so dated but still probably the most book accurate version because it has the time to breath over many hours.
Denis version totally knocked it out of the park and will be remembered as the first truly great and worthy adaption of Dune but he still had to cut so much out for time etc . This series gets to cover all our favourite scenes and it way better than the 80s version

This miniseries was wonderful. Ian Mcniece was perfectly camp for the Baron Harkonnen, as well as the rest of the cast performing to almost Shakespearean levels of theatre acting. Yea, it's not like watching a film but more a play and I love the direction. And the writing greatly expanded Princess Irulans role into an actual character instead of an endnote. I for one think Alec Newman will forever be Muad'Dib that's way better than Timothee Chalet.

I don't know what everyone is talking about. This trailer is not that great. Not only was this story too advanced for 2000 but, I don't see Chani anywhere. Something Denis Villeneuve's clearly understands. Chani was the most important person in Paul's life and the mother of Leto and Ghuanima, not Irulan. Times have changed in the way we regard characters and their ethnicity, and this is why the new Dune movie is going to be EPIC! I can't wait. It's going to leave all of the old ones in the dust. Not because movies are more advanced now, but because directors nowadays aren't controlling as much, by thinking they know better than the writers.

    Dune 84, Dune 2000.
Guys, personal preference is one thing, if you prefer either over Villeneueves, nobody can say anything whatsoever. Cool.
But when you start trashing it, im gonna have my say and tell it how it is.
Both of those are hot messes, both. 84 and 2000. They laid the foundation work for Villeneuve to excel far beyond them.
I now view these are merely shoulders for Villeneuve to stand upon and catapult his own version far beyond those.
Acting, writing, directing, cinematographer, choreography, storytelling, overall visuals, sound design, lighting, music, costumes. There is not ONE aspect of filmmaking that even remotely comes anywhere close to Villeneuve's version. Prefer what ever you want, objectively, theyre nowhere near 😂😂

The story telling in this version is much better though.
It's a TV miniseries, and a low budget one at that. They didn't use green screen, they literally painted backdrops for the desert scenes. It's insane, and a terrible choice, but executed about as best as one could expect.
I mean there was still some green screen -- just not for the desert scenes.
