I don't agree with the idea that the backlash comes from it doing something unexpected. In a lot of ways it did exactly what was expected of it to the most cartoonish degree imaginable.

the older I get the harder it becomes for me to pinpoint a singular favorite capeshit film of mine. between the first christopher reeve superman movie and logan, there's just alot inbetween that speaks to me. The best I can give people who ask me is a top 5 favorites, organized in no particular order, which would be. Batman Returns, Spiderman 3, Darkman, Robocop 2, and Roger Corman's Fantastic Four

Santa Cruz Joker is not in jail but he should be. He just caught a DV for hitting his mom and was declared mentally deficient enough to get away with it.
Thanks for calling out how bad Asian cinema is too. You did not go far enough.

Definitely agree that The Batman's final act is frustrating nonsense. It turns into just another Batman movie. It wants to be Se7en or Manhunter but doesn't have the confidence to go with a small ending.
I suspect the series will follow the pattern of the 90s movies. The first one is heavily compromised, the second one will be great, and the third and fourth will be embarrassingly bad.

I don't know... the ending didn't bother me that much. But I had very low expectations and hopes for the film.
And the film never even SUGGESTED it had the guts to be Se7en. Come on.

Haven't seen the sequel yet. I'm dreading it... but Phillips earned my benefit of a doubt with the first Joker.
And I did NOT want Murray to die! The penultimate scene is absolutely electric because you realize nothing good can happen after Arthur kills his mother. He's a guy who had the deck stacked against him by life AND everything around him went wrong in exactly the worst way possible so he'll never get any help. You understand why he feels the way he feels, but at that point in the story you're watching a man who has completely broken with reality and gotten the worst form of reinforcement he could ever have gotten. The ending is masterful, but it just makes me sad. What a great film.
Why was Parasite bad? Aside from the commie subtext, I mean.

Not sure about Exorcist II, but I do have a minor obsession with Exorcist III and George C. Scott. Gaga's swollen lips will probably take me out, too. Remember Ryan Reynolds , his abs and shaved chest in The Amityille Horror remake? It is 70s.😂

i basically just skimmed thru the movie, it doesn't seem enjoyable but I do like the story and think its valid. I felt like I was the only one that understood the first movie as arthur being used by society as a chaos agent, and in the sequel he then breaks the chain and society kills him bc he's useless. My POV is that people have a misconception that this anarchistic violence is against society, but I see it as a function within it.
He exercised free will instead of being lead by fantasy which was just a manipulation to get him to fulfill this function in society which all the characters play a role in supporting. It'd basically be like if he was the leader of antifa, when really hes just some guy who is pissed off and doesn't give a crap about any of that. So i think it's faithful and empathtic to Arthur. Even though they rape and kill him it's because he chose to just be Arthur. I kinda see it as a heroic and happy ending in a way. I loved the first one and it's one of my favorite movies ever, but i saw the ending as a tragedy, because he's just became part of the cycle or matrix instead of exiting it, which he does in the sequel. So I found that it validates my view of the original. Basically he is Sisiphis smiling, he is going against what the world wants him to feel and do. They want him to be sad and angry and become the Joker. Going against that is the definition of free will. And that is an aspect of the hero's journey, like Jesus going against being a king and accepting his torture
And even though it's cringe to say bc its obvious the parallel that Joker fans also wanted him to be something he isn't. I just knew I had to watch the movie when I saw people spoiling and hating it cuz I had a feeling that they would accidentally tell a good story. It reminds me of The Last of Us 2, which I despise in terms of their intention but also liked the ending of. I find it interesting that these people have an intention to be subversive but can't help but create meaning. Because everything about the movie is designed to piss the fans off
