- What's happening, people! I'm back with another Morten Harket reaction from his 1996 Norwegian album Vogts Villa, and this time we listen to "Gammal Og Vis," which apparently translates to "Old and Wise." So join me for a remarkable tune by Morten with some unusual/spoken vocals. Cheers!

I really like this one. The mood of the song, the spoken parts and Morten's voice makes me think that the two men are sitting at the bar (maybe father and son) surrounded by cigarette smoke, drinking vodka while the father shares his wisdom and the son sings his view of things to him 😂

The title is talking about being old. He must have met Madonna that day.
It is not Morten speaking in the beginning. 😉 It is Håvard Rem reading one of his poems. He did the spoken word part in Fremmed Her, too, and you had wondered if it was Morten. It was almost a month ago, so of course you couldn't remember it now, but you had been "warned" you would hear Håvard in this song, too. 😜 Maybe one day you'll be able to recognise Morten's voice. 😁
This is such a "minor" song for me that I didn't quite remember how it was and was even a little surprised. I realise now that this is the song I like less on the album - or rather, I have hardly paid any attention to it. It's just a weird little piece that comes between two songs. 😅 I also don't like that there's so much of Håvard Rem's voice in it (I am almost sure we can hear him on "backing vocals" at some points, with his very deep guttural voice) and that Morten's is almost unrrecognisable. 🙄
As you say, it's very folksy and playful (those "boom boom boom" 😁). I would say too folksy, for my taste. 😜
There is no info to be found about it (that I know of), except that it is yet another Håvard Rem / Harket collaboration, like the great majority of the songs on this album. It has never been played live.
Yes, you got it right, it's Out Of My Hands that is more "out of his hands". 😄 Though I have later partially corrected myself, because Morten has participated in the songwriting of more or less half of the songs on that album - but, anyway, it's far from being Morten's own piece of work (the songs are credited to so many songwriters, it's more like patchwork!). 😛
Just picture this (if you will...): when a-ha had their first break in 1994, Morten wanted to do his own thing and started writing his own songs (and learned to play the guitar); as he didn't feel confortable enough to write lyrics by himself, he had two Norwegian poets collaborating in the songwriting (Håvard Rem and Ole Sverre Olsen), who became his usual partners for years, from Wild Seed (1995) to Letter From Egypt (2008). They are also credited in a handful of songs on Out Of My Hands (2012), but by that time Morten had found a new writing partner (Peter Kvint), who would be crucial for the songwriting in the 2014 album, Brother.
I have already said it, but I will say it again: just take the week off! 🤗 I know you like doing this and that you probably wouldn't stand not doing any reaction videos for a few days, but you could do just whatever you feel like doing and forget about the "schedules" and "special days". Just take it as a special week, where you will treat yourself and only find time for what you really want to do, no pressures. 👍 I won't complain if there isn't any a-ha related reaction for the rest of the week. 😁 I will be happy if you take it easy and just do what you want to do.
I think Morten was trying to get out of any responsibility with the title “Out of my Hands”. 😂 Bad Shell…bad Shell! 😂

I've been waiting for this one. I LOVE this song. Every time I hear it, I chuckle. It's so crazy NOT Morten. At least I hope so, for his own sake. Or maybe it is? Who knows.
I also really like Håvard Rem's voice. He has the voice of an old alcoholic, so it fits well.
I think the song is about a man who in his youth was in rebellion against society, now he has become a model citizen.
He is a bit in rebellion against himself, and wishes he was as in his youth.
Otherwise, it can be noted that Club 7 is the place in Oslo where Magne and Pål went to hear Morten sing for the first time.
Ole Paus is a Norwegian artist who sings with a speaking voice, much like Håvard does here. He has some really good songs, although not quite my style. "Alt var mye bedre under krigen/ Everything was much better during the war" and "Mitt lille land/My little country" are the two songs I immediately am thinking of. Maria Mena has made a version of "Vårt lille land" which has become a national treasure, I would say.

Now I understand the wanting to be and "old pig" part. There is this American movie I so love from the 60's called "Barefoot in the Park". This older man jokes that he wishes he was actually 10 years older because dirty old men seem to get away with a lot more. Very bad, but funny cause he was joking. Well, half joking anyway. 😂 Yes and who knows, maybe Morten did wish to become an old pig and rebel. 🤔 😂

I think many men feel that they are being feminized in society. They are not allowed to be men on men's terms. lol. I feel for them. I guess that's partly why I love the song, but I like the musical part very much, too.

Ha, I would just say different men have different terms. Like I'm a straight adult male, but I think many of my attitudes and dispositions toward relevant things (women, sexuality, gendered roles and behavior) are surely different (or at least nuanced differently) than those of lots of other straight guys, both in the US and beyond. Heck, my thinking about most issues continues to evolve as I age, keep learning, and have more experiences with others.
And just to be clear, that's not really a political point; I simply mean to say that I don't want some random dude from hundreds or thousands of miles away telling me what it "really" means "to be a man." I'll make my own decisions in that regard, lol.

Of course, being a man or a woman is not the same for everyone, and that's a good thing. It is precisely the standardization in films, music, media in general and advertising that makes young people gender confused, I think. We must have room for everyone, and accept them just as they are, whether they are women or men. Having said that, there will still be those who belong to the extremes, those who are male, and do not possess a hint of feminine qualities - and the opposite on the other side. In today's society, I think they are the ones who have it the most difficult, because it is somehow not allowed anymore - and especially not for the men, those who pick up our trash or hang in the ladders and build our society. Now we must all be somewhere in between. And that's not how it is in the real world. So when you get old enough - I'm there now, even though I'm not that old - you start to give a f#¤k in what other people say.
Oh, and you were asking about Morten's age, too! (You're almost asking more questions than me, Matt - which is impossible, I might as well tell you... 😁) Morten was born in September 1959, so he was 36 when he recorded the album and 37 when it was released, in November 1996.
Morten always looked younger than he was, it's hard to believe he was already 26 years old when they broke through in 1985. He looks and sounds and acts much younger, as you'll see when you watch the movie. 😉😅 No rush!
Matt likes people born in the 1950s! He does prefer them to be not good singers though, and they must be into burlesque. Poor Matt would get an earful from Morten for his sinful ways, so I sense conflict between the two.

Forgot to mention the lyrics: again, I had never even tried to understand them, but I tried today. 😀
Unlike the lyrics in Søndag Morgen (Sunday Morning), where I think I understood it all and dared to post a translation, these lyrics are very difficult to translate and I don't feel I am able to correct Google translate's mistakes (I spotted one or two, but I'm sure there are more). Anyway, it looks like a somewhat playful poem, and here's a piece of the chorus that seems to indicate that: "I don't want to grow old and wise, I want to be an old pig". 😄
"Old pig" (Gammal Gris) was, by the way, the working title of the album. 😜

Too much of Havard & not enough of Morten on this track. I don’t find Havard Rem’s voice attractive to listen to at all… neither the recitation at the start nor the spoken/singing part in the body of the song. Strangely enough though, I do quite like the tune itself. I’m wondering if Morten’s voice is depicting youth and Havard’s harsher, deeper voice the older man…only speculation as I’m at a disadvantage not understanding fully the lyrics and therefore the real meaning of the song.

The lyrics are very difficult to translate, I gather even for a Norwegian... Not too interesting, I would say "snapshots of a lifetime" evoked by someone who was born in 1949. Not Morten, then (maybe Håvard?). 😁

I like the voice. I get to be the odd ball yet again. What can I say? I am a sucker for a man’s deep voice in mostly any language and accent other than American. Well, a sucker for accents too, including American ones, just not my midwestern one. 😁
