I liked the original money heist.
Sure it was a show with quite a few convenient plot devices, reckless characters, BUT it had absolutely GREAT atmosphere and great characters which you probably had to root for. And there were also at least some consequences for stupid decisions.
The 3rd and 4th series I didn't enjoy as much. It seemed to me like the the quality was rapidly declining.
There were some great moments for sure, but overall I left with disappointment and a little bit of regret (fair enough, partially because I had way too high expectations due to my friend's warm recommendation and partially because I binge-watched a lot of it).
This new series dedicated to Berlin is very different and I was excited about it at first.
Very fast I got a cool shower though. It's hard for me to grasp how much time and attention of the first episodes is dedicated to Berlin's irrational behaviour. And it's made worse by the fact that in the very first episode he forbids his sidekick to mix up relationship and professionalism and it's met by "sure enough boss, that is very reasonable".
Maybe I am misremembering the original series, but Berlin I remember as the one who is cold and calculated, yet extravagant in dire and high stakes situations.
Here the heist works in parallel to his romance, Berlin himself doesn't participate in any of the action in the slightest and I just don't like it.
You could even go as far as to say he is useless to the team, or maybe even a burden. (sure I haven't finished the show and don't plan on doing so).
Honestly I wouldn't even mind if the show dedicated a lot of focus to the philosophical questions about love being a disease, doomed to fail, short fling or something to cherish once the spark is gone. The divorce sub-plot was actually quite well done in my humble opinion and worked well in the episode. But did they really have to make the iconic Berlin, into a childish, irresponsible teenager having most of his dialogues ignore everything related to the heist and focused on a flirt which could ruin the plan?
... all the while going against the very idea introduced by himself (as narrator) in the very first scene and principles he laid out!
By the fourth episode I just couldn't keep watching anymore. The guy is just one big walking contradiction with no trace of the awe and implied aura of fear around him that could be sensed oozing from his personality in the original.
The are some positives for sure as the scenes are nice, camera work and pace didn't disturb me, I guess the scenes seemed fluent, actors actually show pretty decent range of emotions, the dialogue about relationships and love wasn't what I signed up for but it wasn't terrible, I would probably even enjoy it, if it weren't for the fact that the show is actively ruining my memory of my favorite character of the original show.
