Better late than never... I somehow circled back to this game almost 3 years after you uploaded this video. I saw on the publisher's website that the counter artwork had been cleaned up, as well as some of the attention-to-detail stuff like misspellings on the game map, etc. Watching your video again, I was reminded of what a clever, compactly designed game this appears to be. You did a fine job channeling the feel of game play to video. Just wanted to say thanks again, Stuka Joe! I've ordered the game, which happens to be on sale right now, and I'm looking forward to it being on the game table soon.
Outstanding over view of the game. I decided to purchase this game based on this video. You go into great detail with your play through. Some of your videos are so compelling that I instantly want to start playing the game. The Pacific war has always interested me and your insights made this game a must purchase. The Stalingrad game also looks like a must buy as well. Thanks again for these videos as they do influence wargames purchases.
I'm glad the videos are helpful. I believe there's a way of promoting games by simply showing how they play, instead of just giving a personal opinion of whether I liked a game or not. So, for me, the games review themselves when they're played and filmed. Thank you.
Thanks, Lancer. The video took me a while. I originally had done a pure rules explanation video, but during the editing process I decided to scrap it and start again. Hope you like it.
Avalon Hill did market a game called Guadalcanal many years ago. It didn't have naval combat and the land units entailed some bookkeeping. It wouldn't be fair to compare that game with this one. However it does show how the design and making of naval games has improved over time. Your video Joe is excellent, as always. Anybody wanting to learn this game would do well to watch the video. QED. A good teaching format. Many thanks.
YO ! Just purchased this game based on your review ! Enjoyed your work so much. I'm a wargame junkie and this one is gettin mainlined as soon as I get it on the table , still a few friends interested in these board & counter games , these days, distilling and streamlining the the design seems to be the ones I and my old friends enjoy most... I cut my teeth as a teen on the Avalon Hill classics of the 1960's and in the 1970's added S&T mag. games. Cheers to you, thanks for putting out such great reviews.
Great video! Didn't think you played the US side that wisely, though. If IJN ships return in TWO turns with even 1 hit, a single hit on an IJN FLEET carrier keeps it out of play for TWO turns, even if only a "6" will sink it. Just got this and can't wait to try it. Too bad it isn't solo friendly, but got it on a friend's recommendation, so at least I have someone to play with.
Yes, I do like it, even though I have not played it with a live opponent. I can see that it is a simple, but elegant design that can present interesting situations as well as surprises.
Just finished a game. Very streamlined. Video is straightforward. Enjoyed both the game and the video.

Great game -- my #1 favorite of any war game published in 2016. Thanks so much for reviewing it!

That was a land combat game, published in the 60's. Not too bad, since it had pads to keep track of unit strength loss.
A great showcase of a game I am very interested in. Love the little intro video too. Thanks Joe!
My pleasure evildediz43. Thank you.
Played this game recently. At 4 turns a very tight game. Many operations orders possible. Very enjoyable.
Totally agree. Each turn counts. Not a lot a room for mistakes.

Thanks, jetjr1ussr. Glad you liked the video. In this day of computers, people interested in paper wargames are a rare breed, indeed. Cheers.
Thanks Joe for this presentation.
Very thorough and extremely helpful!

Thank you, Pavel. The rules are not long, only 8 pages.

Looks like a cool game but wouldn't use Stuka Joe's dice!
Did you like the game Joe?
