Hey, I’m currently having the same problem with my van not starting. I want to try and change the cable myself but I am very new to the game. Could I get a quick list of the supplies I’ll need? I have no idea what kinds of wires and terminals work for this. I plan to head to auto zone soon to try and get what I need.
Now here's all the basic tools that you need and you can shop around to try to find other things that are like these but the ground cable is what you need and you need a 10 mm self tapping sheet metal screw and you need some type of drill impact driver and you need a socket to drive the sheet metal screw through the frame and through the body when you attach the ground cable

Funny your talking about a ground. Another tech had a 2017 Durango today. Dash was flickering and showing alternator voltage dropping to 10 volts. He automatically tried to sell an alternator. I said hold up man let's check this. No need to throw a part on because the dash says that. The dash is electrical. They can go haywire. So break out the multimeter. Alternator was putting out 14.4 volts. Start checking wires. Ground strap right front fender under the TIPM (totally integrated control module) eyelet was broken and would touch and break connection. Cut vehicle off. Crimp on a new eyelet. Secure to fender where it was originally located. Dash works fine. Alternator works fine. Battery is at full capacity. Have a nice day mam. No charge. That tech thanked me cause he wouldn't have thought to look there. Almost sold an alternator that was not needed. The customer was happy. She praised that other tech and I gave him the credit. Why? Because I taught him something. He listened and learned. Now he knows to check grounds
all I can say is I love you lol.. I broke down today and googled and was skeptical. that was exactly what happened to me. saved me a lot of troubleshooting. Thank you
This video is just simple and so important. I wished I watched it before I went to change the pump and even the canister cause anyways I knew that the canister was faulty on my E350 Ford super duty 2011, because every time I went to the gas station and start to fill up the nozzle would stop every 5 to 10 secs. So I changed the fuel pump and the canister and the car will crank but wouldn't start, after different test to see what the problem was, I went back to look into more videos and I found this one to be the one. I remember I checked that cable and it look good but I didn't actually touched it, I was just a visual inspection, this time I pulled it and it came off really easy, that explained why I was still having some voltage going into the pump but it was barely 8 volts. After I installed a new cable the car started. THANK YOU for the time you spent into this video, I'm not a mechanic whatsoever but people like you can teach so many wonderful things, I send you a big hug and hope you keep sharing all this amazing knowledge, cause it's the equivalent of sharing love. Most (good) electrical engineers will let the relays have hot +12 on the coil, and let the switch ground the system. It's less power lines running to dash switches. Less chance of a short if a ground line gets shorted to ground. Only power necessary would be for the volt meter and dash illumination. Everything in a clean design would be can-bus data and grounded signals to the relay or device. Ford PCM is a ground control unit, the injectors, coils, etc all have 12+ volts waiting for the PCM to send the ground signal to open or fire.
I noticed my ground strap was bad when I bought my van, but I didn't realize that it would lead to the van not starting. When I saw your video, I had a Eureka! type moment. I really appreciate your help, as I was about to buy a fuel pressure gauge.
No frickin way ! I just bought a Econoline conversion van for $500 as an investment to fix up . The outside is mint . The underside looks like the one you worked on . Actually came from Illinois ! Hard to start and keep running . Keeps blowing the check engine light fuse . Not sure if it's related but that's going to be the first thing I check ! Great video as usual . Thank you !

The Econoline and the F-150s and the expedition's.... just terrible with grounds He'll even today most of the problems I find on the F-150 are because of grounds when it comes to electrical issues
Just put new carpet in my 01 Excursion today. I happened to check one of those braided grounds while I was lining up bolt holes from underneath. Love living in the south. Surface rust only on the frame. Braided ground totally okay, even after 20 years.

Def not from down in iowa/Missouri then. My grandpa bought a brand new 1991 f150 back in 92, and it only has 4300 miles on it yet since he drove it in the winter around his property here where they salt the roads, the frame is to the point you can stick a screwdriver through it and it’s flexing in the middle
@@UglyTv22 I almost think driving infrequently is worse cause the salt never gets washed off and it eats it worse when it gets warm out. They use calcium chloride some places for deicing and keeping dust down on dirt roads. That shit is horrible

I've had those braided ground straps break on just about every vehicle I've owned, no matter what manufacturers they were made by! Terrible design flaw.

Thanks so much after fixing 2 corroded wires and a corroded and cracked module. The van I was working on came back 2 weeks later with the same issue. Spent at least 5 hrs rechecking everything never even saw that ground being related to the circuit. You saved my ass thanks
An excellent video, and for me a reminder. Years ago, after long blocking an E-Series, I ran into this very issue when attempting to start the engine and noticed very quickly the fuel pump not working. It was actually by accident that I discovered I had forgotten to reconnect that ground, when I saw it arcing on the frame as I touched it, and heard the fuel pump cycle at the same time. BTW, that is some nasty frame and body rot happening there, on that otherwise low mileage at least fourteen model year old van.
I was going to say the same thing about how badly that underbody looks with rust peeling off everywhere. The outside looks perfect which leads me to believe that during winter they keep it washed all the time, but that underbody sits with salt on it and rusts year-round. Salt will eat off electrical connections like nothing. A few years back my Grand Marquis which is used as my winter car would not even crank the starter. Turns out that the connector on the wire to the starter was completely corroded off. Even though I oil spray the car every spring, obviously the slush washed the oil off that connector because the starter sits down lower on the engine. I am now using a heavier grade of oil for the underbody to try and prevent wash off like that.

@@hajileserpud9539 Here in Canada I prefer Krown oil spray for the interior body panels since it has excellent creeping action. My Mustang, which has not been oil sprayed for over four years, still has oil creeping out from around the door locks. I do not drive it in winter, so only oil spray it every few years. I started using Rust Check brand oil spray for the underbody a few years ago that is thicker and stickier so it does not wash off. If your work van is already being eaten by rust, oil spray may stop it at the point it is in, but the oil spray works great when you put it on a nice new vehicle with no rust at the very start. And if it is going to be winter driven, then I suggest each spring that you use an underbody cleaner with a pressure washer cranked up to the top psi in order to flush of all the crud and built up salt from underneath. Then have it oil sprayed right after it is dry from washing.
Just wanted to comment this was a confirmed fix for me, 2014 e350 crank no start. No fuel pressure very failt pump noise until I went to this ground strap. Replaced and back to 100% thank you sir!

I had this same issue on my 03 F250. I was having an issue with my power windows and radio wouldn't work until I bounced down the road a bit. I noticed the ground rotting away when doing an oil change, I like to look the bottom of my vehicles over while laying under them. I put a new ground wire on and problem solved.
The old air cooled VW had problems with the fuel injection system when the grounds were bad. A lot of the grounds cane together by the battery box and often suffered corrosion issues. Clean the body and wires where they came together and that often solved the problem. Similarly, if a clutch job or the transaxle came down, they forgot to re-connect or replace the ground to transaxle cable. They would burn up the contact points for the FI in the distributor. Fixing these item(s) often repaired many running issues with the vehicle.
I just fixed my 2011 E350XLT using this method.....I could just hear the mechanic telling me I need a new fuel pump, injectors and an expensive goat....great video...Thanks!
Just having an intermittent crank / no start on our E450 RV after it being stood over lockdown. I changed the fuel pump relay a few days ago and it seems to be ok but will definitely be checking this ground strap now.
Wow! This is something that many won't even check out. Had a 2000 Honda Accord that had interminted starting issues. Previous owner had a subwoofer grounded to the ground wires on the fuel pump. Just left it sort of hooked up. Removed what was left of subwoofer ground, cleaned everything up and tighted up the fuel pump grounds. A few years later all is still good. This was a accidental find by the way. Enjoy your videos!
I have an 89 E150, all relays check good. Added ground to body at battery. 12v out of inertia switch. 0.14v at high pressure pump on frame. Just lost.. I'm going to try adding a ground as you did see if it works.
You are absolutely right I had a mechanic look at this thing he says it was a fuel pump I put a brand new fuel pump in it and he couldn't fix it it's a damn ground wire 20 cents $300 fuel pump. You're awesome

It would turn over but no start a couple times it started one time it was running and then cut off we had a mechanic come look at it he couldn't fix it. I'm currently out of town. I have an RV, built on an E-Super Duty frame, that I'm working on, at home. It's experiencing the same symptoms. Prior to viewing this video, my immediate plans were to change the fuel filter and pump. Now I can't wait to get home and check for a bad ground strap.
Had this exact problem on my 2005 e450 chassis rv a couple of years ago. Being an automobile tech and later service advisor i looked for the cause myself. Many weekend hours but i finally found poor ground from the electric fuel pump module to the frame. The module grounds through a steel bracket mounted on frame. Well it used to but there is now a good solid ground wire as well..had a couple cold ones after start up. Many hours but cost zero
great vid. this might be my friends problem on his hvac van. one thing i would recomend is to drill and tap my threads for a bolt or machine screw and not use a self tapper.
James you came here and you possibly have solved your problem which this is the number one problem for a crank no start on an Econoline I don't mind suggestions James but you're telling me what you would do if you were me but you're coming to me for help? Come on man what I did here is perfectly fine and it works perfectly fine
One thing not mentioned is that Ford likes to run wires/tube/hose on the inside of the frame rail ... be sure to check first before running a self-tapper ;)

Noticed the other day the ground from my transmission to the frame rail has like 3 threads of wire left. Gonna have to do this little trick tomorrow when I’m changing my rear diff out

I have a question regarding the central locking system on my 04 Mazda 3 Hatchback. When I press the unlock on the key fob, only the drivers door unlocks but all doors lock when I push the lock button. I went to the dealer and the master tech said there is no central locking reset procedure; it might be the BCM which I think is bs . I replaced the latching assembly for the hatch and nothing changed. Is there a central locking reset procedure for an 04 Mazda 3 Hatchback and if there is how?
That’s a very important ground that ford cheaped on. Are the 2011 econoline stripped chassis like this or no because I may check out the one on our 16 foot box truck which is a 2011 e350 frame with a Dual rear axle. Also I’ve never seen rust that bad on a newer van

I saw a video that said, you have to make sure your ground from frame to body like you did, then frame to motor then body to block. In my 93 E150 i changed out all theRelays cause never done it, put ground from block were egr valve mounts to it and fram under hood were it atraches to left whedl well. Checked it with meter & have Gd connectivity but still DON'T start jyyst cranks. Will try the one in your video to see.
I love the addition of the washers, super smart!! How many times have we all used screws to mount those connections to something with the impact without a washer and it just twists the cable around and weakens the crimped connection or pulls it out if you don't quite hold it right.
hi boss, i have a 2007 ford e-450 6.8 v10 box truck, my truck when it's hot and i'm driving on the freeway starts some strange behavior and starts to slow down, it stays between 40-50 mph and farts already change the maf or mass sensor and the throttle body but it's still the same, what do you think is the problem?
While researching my engine flooding problem on my 1996 E150 I came across a video [ 94 Ford f150 fuel problems] That mentions Fords F150's around the same year to have the same problem with the grounds. the poor grounds supposedl;y gives a false reading to the computer which somwhow contributes to the flooding. Thanks for your time and effort, it's certainly worth checking into.

Dude thanks! My work van was down and it just sputtered out and stopped working, it also would only sit in idle rough with starter spray to get it going. As soon as you gave it gas it died. Literally it was because of that ground. Weird how funny electronics act without a good ground

I think this is another reason people say they are being gouged to death when they get their bill and it includes things like fuel pumps etc and the problem is the ground. You can't buy experience and it sure paid off here.
I also notice that the turnover speed is Faster when the pump is Not running, and the compression sound, cadence is absent. Presume it to the difference between compressing Vapor vs Air only. BUT HELP, do you know of other reasons that the pump will just Stop, either while driving or after parked.. But then start again after a while?.... Having that issue my 96 Econoline Van 351...

Fuel gauge wasn't reading either before the ground strap repair.

These are pretty thick wires they are not your standard thin wires they just look small on camera

I've had those braided ground straps break on just about every vehicle I've owned, no matter what manufacturers they were made by! Terrible design flaw.
I use tweed and coat it with bulldozer grease.

Thanks so much after fixing 2 corroded wires and a corroded and cracked module. The van I was working on came back 2 weeks later with the same issue. Spent at least 5 hrs rechecking everything never even saw that ground being related to the circuit. You saved my ass thanks

An excellent video, and for me a reminder. Years ago, after long blocking an E-Series, I ran into this very issue when attempting to start the engine and noticed very quickly the fuel pump not working. It was actually by accident that I discovered I had forgotten to reconnect that ground, when I saw it arcing on the frame as I touched it, and heard the fuel pump cycle at the same time. BTW, that is some nasty frame and body rot happening there, on that otherwise low mileage at least fourteen model year old van.
I was going to say the same thing about how badly that underbody looks with rust peeling off everywhere. The outside looks perfect which leads me to believe that during winter they keep it washed all the time, but that underbody sits with salt on it and rusts year-round.
Salt will eat off electrical connections like nothing. A few years back my Grand Marquis which is used as my winter car would not even crank the starter. Turns out that the connector on the wire to the starter was completely corroded off. Even though I oil spray the car every spring, obviously the slush washed the oil off that connector because the starter sits down lower on the engine. I am now using a heavier grade of oil for the underbody to try and prevent wash off like that.

@@hajileserpud9539 Here in Canada I prefer Krown oil spray for the interior body panels since it has excellent creeping action. My Mustang, which has not been oil sprayed for over four years, still has oil creeping out from around the door locks. I do not drive it in winter, so only oil spray it every few years.
I started using Rust Check brand oil spray for the underbody a few years ago that is thicker and stickier so it does not wash off.
If your work van is already being eaten by rust, oil spray may stop it at the point it is in, but the oil spray works great when you put it on a nice new vehicle with no rust at the very start. And if it is going to be winter driven, then I suggest each spring that you use an underbody cleaner with a pressure washer cranked up to the top psi in order to flush of all the crud and built up salt from underneath. Then have it oil sprayed right after it is dry from washing.

Just wanted to comment this was a confirmed fix for me, 2014 e350 crank no start. No fuel pressure very failt pump noise until I went to this ground strap. Replaced and back to 100% thank you sir!

I had this same issue on my 03 F250. I was having an issue with my power windows and radio wouldn't work until I bounced down the road a bit. I noticed the ground rotting away when doing an oil change, I like to look the bottom of my vehicles over while laying under them. I put a new ground wire on and problem solved.
The old air cooled VW had problems with the fuel injection system when the grounds were bad. A lot of the grounds cane together by the battery box and often suffered corrosion issues. Clean the body and wires where they came together and that often solved the problem. Similarly, if a clutch job or the transaxle came down, they forgot to re-connect or replace the ground to transaxle cable. They would burn up the contact points for the FI in the distributor. Fixing these item(s) often repaired many running issues with the vehicle.
I just had the same issue on my 2011 E150, had no fuel because of a broken (frame to body) ground strap. Thanks for posting this.

Just having an intermittent crank / no start on our E450 RV after it being stood over lockdown. I changed the fuel pump relay a few days ago and it seems to be ok but will definitely be checking this ground strap now.
Wow! This is something that many won't even check out. Had a 2000 Honda Accord that had interminted starting issues. Previous owner had a subwoofer grounded to the ground wires on the fuel pump. Just left it sort of hooked up. Removed what was left of subwoofer ground, cleaned everything up and tighted up the fuel pump grounds. A few years later all is still good. This was a accidental find by the way. Enjoy your videos!

Had this exact thing happen last week. Fleet shop it came from threw everything at it before having it towed over.
I have an 89 E150, all relays check good. Added ground to body at battery. 12v out of inertia switch. 0.14v at high pressure pump on frame. Just lost.. I'm going to try adding a ground as you did see if it works.
Before you replaced the cable, when you turned the key, could you hear the fuel pump engage for that breif second or two?

You are absolutely right I had a mechanic look at this thing he says it was a fuel pump I put a brand new fuel pump in it and he couldn't fix it it's a damn ground wire 20 cents $300 fuel pump. You're awesome

It would turn over but no start a couple times it started one time it was running and then cut off we had a mechanic come look at it he couldn't fix it. I'm currently out of town. I have an RV, built on an E-Super Duty frame, that I'm working on, at home. It's experiencing the same symptoms. Prior to viewing this video, my immediate plans were to change the fuel filter and pump. Now I can't wait to get home and check for a bad ground strap.

Had this exact problem on my 2005 e450 chassis rv a couple of years ago. Being an automobile tech and later service advisor i looked for the cause myself. Many weekend hours but i finally found poor ground from the electric fuel pump module to the frame. The module grounds through a steel bracket mounted on frame. Well it used to but there is now a good solid ground wire as well..had a couple cold ones after start up. Many hours but cost zero

great vid. this might be my friends problem on his hvac van. one thing i would recomend is to drill and tap my threads for a bolt or machine screw and not use a self tapper.

One thing not mentioned is that Ford likes to run wires/tube/hose on the inside of the frame rail ... be sure to check first before running a self-tapper ;)

Noticed the other day the ground from my transmission to the frame rail has like 3 threads of wire left. Gonna have to do this little trick tomorrow when I’m changing my rear diff out

I have a question regarding the central locking system on my 04 Mazda 3 Hatchback. When I press the unlock on the key fob, only the drivers door unlocks but all doors lock when I push the lock button. I went to the dealer and the master tech said there is no central locking reset procedure; it might be the BCM which I think is bs . I replaced the latching assembly for the hatch and nothing changed.
Is there a central locking reset procedure for an 04 Mazda 3 Hatchback and if there is how?

1st click is for driver door and second is for additional doors

That’s a very important ground that ford cheaped on. Are the 2011 econoline stripped chassis like this or no because I may check out the one on our 16 foot box truck which is a 2011 e350 frame with a Dual rear axle. Also I’ve never seen rust that bad on a newer van

I saw a video that said, you have to make sure your ground from frame to body like you did, then frame to motor then body to block.
In my 93 E150 i changed out all theRelays cause never done it, put ground from block were egr valve mounts to it and fram under hood were it atraches to left whedl well. Checked it with meter & have Gd connectivity but still DON'T start jyyst cranks.

I love the addition of the washers, super smart!! How many times have we all used screws to mount those connections to something with the impact without a washer and it just twists the cable around and weakens the crimped connection or pulls it out if you don't quite hold it right.
hi boss, i have a 2007 ford e-450 6.8 v10 box truck, my truck when it's hot and i'm driving on the freeway starts some strange behavior and starts to slow down, it stays between 40-50 mph and farts already change the maf or mass sensor and the throttle body but it's still the same, what do you think is the problem?
Tune up and check fuel pressure when warm
While researching my engine flooding problem on my 1996 E150 I came across a video [ 94 Ford f150 fuel problems] That mentions Fords F150's around the same year to have the same problem with the grounds. the poor grounds supposedl;y gives a false reading to the computer which somwhow contributes to the flooding. Thanks for your time and effort, it's certainly worth checking into.

Dude thanks! My work van was down and it just sputtered out and stopped working, it also would only sit in idle rough with starter spray to get it going. As soon as you gave it gas it died. Literally it was because of that ground. Weird how funny electronics act without a good ground

I separated the fuel line and turned key on. Fuel came out great. Pump works perfectly. But will the missing ground strap still make the not start?

I think this is another reason people say they are being gouged to death when they get their bill and it includes things like fuel pumps etc and the problem is the ground. You can't buy experience and it sure paid off here.

I also notice that the turnover speed is Faster when the pump is Not running, and the compression sound, cadence is absent. Presume it to the difference between compressing Vapor vs Air only. BUT HELP, do you know of other reasons that the pump will just Stop, either while driving or after parked.. But then start again after a while?.... Having that issue my 96 Econoline Van 351...

*QUESTION:* I have a 2015 Ford Escape 2.0L. I was planning to install a DIY sun/moonroof position indicator using a magnetic reed switch, indicator LED and magnet (all 12V compliant). Would I have any power issues, if I tapped into one of the dome light wires to make the circuit? Do you have any advice for the installation? Thanks in advance!
