Sad to see that happen to this rig. I have a 2002 with 205k miles, and still running strong. I replaced the radiator at about 170k because the plastic for the upper hose had rotted away. Just bought one of these. Exact model and color. It had a small misfire at idle initially and was leaking some oil around the valve cover. Went full home-gamer on it and did the timing cover gasket and timing chain (while I was in there). It had just an obscene amount of crusty sludge in it. Buttoned it back up to find the miss at idle had gotten worse over the couple of weeks it sat apart. The thing drove but just really had a hate for the idling. Long story short, she's getting an engine. Previous owner toasted it just the to the brink of death and sold it with a small miss at idle. I'm playing the very expensive fool, but it would have been more fun if mine had blown smoke rings out of the coolant reservoir...
We had the Taurus do this (not as bad) but the head gaskets blew and it was smoking out the tail pipe pretty bad. We had run it not knowing this until I did an extensive amount of work on it, and found water in the oil. We parked it with the intention of replacing the motor along with a few other parts but decided to buy a different car and scrap the Ford. It was a real nice car and only had 145K but I think it had a problem (head gaskets) that was covered up before. The wife is happy with her newer and lower mileage'd Elantra though. So we won in the end. Timing Belt replacement is next for that car though.
Hi Eric just want to say I love your videos you have awesome content! I am a little bit of a mechanic myself want to open my own shop one day. Thanks for all you do there are things you have helped me understand like diagnostic work with electrical I really want to know more and get experience in it
Blown head gasket and bad radiator. There is no way they didn't notice the temp light but they just kept on driving until it blew. It got hot because of the big hole in the radiator which eventually blew the head gasket. They will salvage that car instead of crushing it.
Rebuilt tranny just got toasted with the massive overheat. Even if it feels ok right now I am positive that it won't feel very good in a couple of 1000 miles. That kinda Temps would burn up the tranny in no time
Ford Escape...number one on car complaints.com. Sad for the owner but seeing smoke signals was fun. Thanks for the follow up. It's kind of cool to get the whole story.
We have an 04 Mazda tribute, my wife's son smoked the engine. We spent $4500 on a remand from NAPA. Took a week, and he just got back from a 2 month excursion putting 11000 miles driving around the country.
Don't know what part of the country your shop is,but my 2003 escape still on the hoof ,2019. Red rig, yellow rear hatch with a dash of rust all over. She has 409 thousand km's, had it since 200,000. 130 kilometers every day for work, runs well, leaks bit oil on back valve cover. Bought a /12,but still prefer old ketchup and mustard as my daughter calls her. God bless,Merry Christmas from 🇨🇦🎄
Back when I was still doing mostly line work as a younger tech, we had an Escape of similar vintage towed into the shop. They had hit some sort of wildlife out on a back road the night before and apparently didn't even stop until the vehicle forced them to. They bent the condenser into a C and broke the bottom of the radiator off, then continued to drive until the engine died. By the time it got to us, the engine had no compression on any cylinder. Not low compression, none. On any cylinder. The oil smelled like a fire pit and the coolant reservoir smelled like a gas tank. Escapes were still relatively new at that point, so their insurance paid to put in a new engine directly from Ford. I've seen lots of nuked engines and blown head gaskets since then, but that's the only time I've seen someone overheat an engine so badly that it lost all of its sealing ability.
These engines are awesome. I have over 200k on my 3.0 DOHC and she is still running strong. In a 2000 taurus with original transmission. All depends on how you treat them.
Upstate new york junk yards all over with cars with good motors and rusty body why not put in a motor can buy one for a song with a tran's for about $800.00
I have had to do one just like it from overheating but it had no compression left. Not to bad once you figure out how to support the drivetrain where you can split it apart. You may have something better than i had to work with. Good luck it looks clean
It will live on.......The parts alone are worth it... I'm sure someone will take advantage. Heck, these things are all over our local pick and pull yards. Nip a used engine for about 150 and roll the dice....
HAHAHA! 23:4 with the booster case was fantastic!! :D :D :D Man, that thing was fried to a cinder! I've been around engines a long, long time, and have never seen one that bad EVER. One time I overheated my '86 Grand Marquis after a coolant flush without removing the t-stat. Thing got so hot the oil turned to milk from the coolant that shot past the head gasket! I was watching the upper hose start to blister, when my cat-like reflexes pulled the Lever-Vent cap and avoided catastrophe. Changed the oil, and the following week I towed a U-Haul trailer 2,400 miles to Phoenix, AZ without a hiccup ... aside from a blown heater hose. A 7/16" deep socket fixed that one. :D 21st century manufacturing for ya. I'm afraid they're trying to put us out of business by making all vehicles throw-aways ... :o
The engine swap and tear down and analysis of the old engine would have made a good video series. Do the fords typically have head gasket problems? If the radiator was cracked it would be reasonable to say that the coolant leaked out and then the engine overheated. A little leak in antifreeze can be an expensive repair when the engine is fried from overheating.
Damn. It's pretty hard to blow the head gaskets on these Duratec motors. If only people had the slight common sense to watch their temperature gauge and react to it when it's deep into the red. I wonder how many miles this kid drove with no coolant in it, lmao. I'm amazed it will even start after that. I also don't blame you for not wanting to pull the heads. Who knows what horror show you'd find after getting into it. It's also a big pain to do head gaskets on a DOHC motor anyway.
You know, there should be some sort of alarm that goes off when the motor gets hot. I have to admit, I don't always keep my eyes on the gauges. Most kids don't know the alternator from a Sunbeam Mixmaster.
Joseph Tucci I think back at the 1970's motor's then could take some heat block was real heavy head's were thick but even then somebody found a way to hurt it.
bg147 They do have that it dings my car dings when gas is low dings if temperature gets too high dings when a lights out. Just people are stupid cars are literally idiot prof but people still find a way to destroy them
tell the wife you learn form watching this channel so you can fix the family car yourself..that means money saved not going to mechanic can be money for her to go shopping...always bring it back to shopping and she wont complain.
I've had them pulse out the coolant tank but not that bad but that was cool. No combustion leak detection required for that one. When you were cranking it I was laughing. What came first the chicken or the egg but either way that baby is cooked. When you gave the last rights before it was laid to rest I about spit my coffee out. It was a nice touch :-)
Random Repair Just watched your vid on the pro trailer option on a Ford... dunno if I love it or hate it haha not even sure what to say. Does the world really need help backing up a trailer?
Random Repair Lol ouch haha no it is ok but I am just thinking that vehicles have so much crap on them what is next? I want one that I can just take a nap and let it drive and it wakes me up to back the trailer in haha
You can't escape in a "Ford Escape" guaranteed! I still own a 2013 Ford Escape SE with 65K miles on it, and it has been in the shop at least thirty times. I have called the wrecker service thirteen or fourteen to get out of my home drive-way. I left it in Puerta Palomas, Mexico, for three days, and nobody stoled it. Had to haul it back home on a car trailer. I had it fix about two weeks ago, and Ford Dealership has for eleven days, and between the repairs and car rental, it cost me $1400. Now, it has broken down again a week after Ford did there so-called fix.
Reminds me of when a local used car dealer was buying auction vehicles and was having them dropped at my shop sight unseen he sent over a Charger with a 5.7l Hemi. It was obvious that it was overheated and no compression on 7 of 8 cylinders. I had a hunch that it wasn't the rings and likely the valve seats fell out of the head. Turns out I was right after I pulled the heads and found valve seats hanging off the valves. Obviously the pistons had very slight imprints from hitting them. Customer was adamant on fixing it so slapped new heads waterpump and misc gaskets and hoses and because I am a performance tech I gasket matched ported and polished the heads and put it all together. Ran nicely and at first shifted nice. I had already done the fluid and filter on the tranny as it was burnt but still ok and I was confident that it was just from overheating and not an already dying tranny. A few weeks later I found the car in my driveway and a note. .... it read you were right the tranny was ok till yesterday and now it has permanent nuteral in all positions. Whats it going to cost to fix.... he learned a very valuable 2500$ lesson. When engine was severely overheated odds are that the tranny is hurt badly and may as well figure that it will need a new one shortly after repairs to engine are done
when you said it had overheated and it was no start condition and then the first time I heard you try to start it I knew it was a blown head gasket and a bad one at that. I had a radiator hose split on me on my 96 Maxima and it showed none of the symptoms it just started making noise and that was the first morning I had that something was wrong. I immediately pulled over but it was too late the damage was done.

Nice send off Eric, it was touching.....
I am surprised the owner gave up on it.
I find it unlikely you could find a used car in as good a shape as that was for the price of a doner engine.
Hell I’d put another engine n radiator in it an d keep rolling. Damn thing already has a rebuilt transmission.
Sent to the crusher!!! SHIIIIIIIIIIT!!!! I CAN GET A 94k mile motor for $300 or so. That would be a great little ride.
I'm so sad for that car
Where can you get a motor with 90k for $300?🤔
@@jimh.412 Well I don't know where he would get it but I would get it from the internet, or a junkyard
We have an 04 Mazda tribute, my wife's son smoked the engine. We spent $4500 on a remand from NAPA. Took a week, and he just got back from a 2 month excursion putting 11000 miles driving around the country.
If all else in good shape someone would pay 500 or more to fix it up themselves. I certainly would. Escapes are dang good SUV's.
God bless,Merry Christmas from 🇨🇦🎄
Mrs. O , beautiful as usual.
you fixed it eric you got it running
I think I would have gone with "drive through the valley off death..." And "rod and piston..." In my prayer for it lol
Well worth fixing. Engines are plentiful and cheap for these. Too bad she overheated, I see plenty of these with very high mileage.
These engines are awesome. I have over 200k on my 3.0 DOHC and she is still running strong. In a 2000 taurus with original transmission. All depends on how you treat them.
Your right i would fix it.
This is the most comically blown head gasket I've seen! LMAO 😂
South Main and Rainman Ray are my favorite youtube mechanics.
Hello Eric, you sounded like a preacher when you were quoting the Bible. That was cool. The lady made a good choice by letting the car go.
It will live on.......The parts alone are worth it... I'm sure someone will take advantage. Heck, these things are all over our local pick and pull yards. Nip a used engine for about 150 and roll the dice....
Well, at least we know that the starter motor was very good😂
Good point.
She got a new aftermarket stack! Cut out thru the hood cool hoodstacks
Amazing it started. Another Ford that doesn't want to die but been so abused. It is so sad.
It's sad. But this was your funniest video yet, Eric.
HAHAHA! 23:4 with the booster case was fantastic!! :D :D :D
Man, that thing was fried to a cinder! :D
21st century manufacturing for ya.
Ill take my escape well done!!
I love the ending you gave to the late Escape. It was great. THANKS FRIEND
IMO Escapes are good cars, my uncle had one he put 180k on in 3 years, without any problems... Then he hit a deer
Found On Road Dead (FORD)! Luv your stuff!
Motor get's hot i don't fool with new late model motor's they can't take heat block is to thin i will alway go with a motor.
That is spot on my friend.
Just people are stupid cars are literally idiot prof but people still find a way to destroy them
I trust you and old Scotty. Y'all help us shade trees out
The owner only wanted $200??? Tires are worth probably $500... Buy for $200 then sell it for $400-$500 as a "mechanic's dream."
For sure i would.
Could part that thing out, and over time probably get yourself a couple grand or more.
What a comedy act....you guys are great!!
I would try that blue devil stuff, surely can't hurt.
I don't know what's wrong with me but this just keeps getting funnier every time I watch it.
14:37 I almost spit my coffee! Ahahah nice video as usual Eric O.
Man I swear I love this channel...... its very addictive...... gets me in trouble with my wife a lot of times...........
tell the wife you learn form watching this channel so you can fix the family car yourself..that means money saved not going to mechanic can be money for her to go shopping...always bring it back to shopping and she wont complain.
At 14:37, I laughed so hard I sprayed my breakfast all over the desk. Great video. Thumbs up!
That's one way to help relieve your exhaust back pressure. I like the SOS pulsed smoke signals out the coolant tank to help the tow truck find it.
I know right? Have you seen one puff that bad before?
I've had them pulse out the coolant tank but not that bad but that was cool. No combustion leak detection required for that one. When you were cranking it I was laughing. What came first the chicken or the egg but either way that baby is cooked. When you gave the last rights before it was laid to rest I about spit my coffee out. It was a nice touch :-)
Love how you are just starting it for fun :) Looks like it made your day
Yep I thought it was pretty cool so why not :)
+South Main Auto Repair keep doing what you do
Random Repair Just watched your vid on the pro trailer option on a Ford... dunno if I love it or hate it haha not even sure what to say. Does the world really need help backing up a trailer?
+South Main Auto Repair I was going to visit you this year... now I don't know. haha
Shame of it is, a friend of mine has an engine for that from a low mileage wreck sitting in his shop here in South Jersey.
Ford said "SOS" smoke signal.
Ford R.I.P.
As bad as I feel, that is funny as hell. Smoke out of the reservoir!!!!!
Lol reading it's last rights had me laughing hard
The chicken came first...there is a protein in the egg shell that is only produced by the chicken and is found no where else......great video :)
"Thy Crank Rod and Shifter Staff, they comfort me..."
Blue smoke of Head Gasket Death Ouch surprised she started Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? It was the rooster that came first.
when you said it had overheated and it was no start condition and then the first time I heard you try to start it I knew it was a blown head gasket and a bad one at that. I had a radiator hose split on me on my 96 Maxima and it showed none of the symptoms it just started making noise and that was the first morning I had that something was wrong. I immediately pulled over but it was too late the damage was done.
haha "got it set on nuclear" man you make my day!
Unfortunately, he said "nukular" :((
Love the finale & the background music, Eternal Father - Naval Hymn. Great video as usual.
hard to care about the project when Mrs O is on screen!!
Dr. O - Patient pronounced at 10:39 a.m. T.O.D. - No further resuscitation necessary -
Coroner's inquest: Vehicle driven while overheating causing catastrophic failure to the engine and ancillary cooling system.
Father O - presided over the service shortly thereafter -
A beautiful service padre........
The puffs through the res. put me in mind of a steam locomotive chugging along. I'd say the kiddies were beating on daddy's car, maybe? Easy enough diag. I loved the ending, send it home, back to the earth whence it came or china, which ever pays the most. Thanks for the video.
Your prayers on this engine made me really laugh ERIC !
Thank you and I buy you a beer
