This was a quick and helpful video. I figured that little disc inside the cartridge would pose an obstacle to refilling (possibly that was Pilot's intent?) so it was good to see how you circumvent it. Thanks!
Thanks for uploading and it is very useful to refill pilot parallel pen with ink instead of buying the cartridges which sometime is difficult to buy unless though on line.
This is true and a useful suggestion. However, I don't do this for two reasons. One, I tend to switch colors often so a large reservoir is not a big plus for me. More importantly, I have found that the plastic that these pens are made from becomes brittle over time and stress cracks form around the connection between the barrel and the nib. This could lead to leaks.
@@TeamFish15 No. I've just found that the barrel eventually starts developing stress cracks in the thread area. This could easily just be my heavy handed usage causing this but I figured I'd mention it as it could become an issue.
Thanks for another great video, Uvulus! Do we have to make sure the flap closes after re-filling? And how full should we fill the cartridge - all the way to the flap, or making sure not to go past the flap? :)
Hi Uvulus, your calligraphy is great and I hugely admire it. But I was wondering whether we can achieve the graduated colour variation in the pilot parallel pen using other inks as well or that is achieved only by the pilots ink cartridges only. Thank you.
+Asna Amoodi I have had success doing this with fountain pen inks, india inks, water, and watercolor paints. A quick dip of the nib in the other ink is all it takes. For watercolor I use a loaded brush.
My pilot parallel pins often skip/dry out slightly on one side when i am at the end of a long stroke. I'm using 'caligraphy paper' and i note it happens less than on normal paper but it still happens. I try to correct for this by pressing harder and sometimes I am successful. But it's very annoying, am I doing something wrong or could it be faulty pens? (i have all 4 pen sizes and they all do this).
It sounds like maybe you are putting a bit more pressure on one side as you end the stroke. You don't need to use more pressure. Less is better actually. Also check that the nib isn't getting clogged.
Very helpful vid nice one! Just purchased some Diamine ink (as u mentioned it in a previous comment) my main concern is avoiding clogging of the pen tips, is the Diamine ink suitable without diluting the ink? if not in your experience what percentage do you recommend filling ink to water? e.g 95% ink 5% water..
According to you, any fountain black ink can be used but when I used black fountain ink in parallel pen it created dull and grey lettering n i m confused which brands i need to go for , please tell me the best dark black inks n other coloured inks which I can use in pilot parallel pen. Can I go for pilot iroshizuku black n coloured variants ?
I've seen reviews of the Iroshizuki inks that are good. I haven't tried them myself though. The black that I use is Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin. It works well for me.
Hey there, i just got my parallel pen and i wanted to ask, is it okay to refill it with Staedtler mars matic 745 ink? I use that for refilling my rapitographs which have much smaller tip so i guess it should be fine, but i just want to make myself sure :) Awesome video btw.
In my experience, technical pen inks don't work very well in the parallel pens. Although my experience is with the koh-i-noor inks, they seemed to clog pretty quickly.
I had just received a Pilot Parallel Pen as a gift, but I find that I'm using up a lot of ink already. Should I be buying 36 cartridges for around $15 or should I buy standard fountain ink for $10?
+Yiding Yang I think that in the long run it will be cheaper to buy bottled ink and refill. The Pilot ink is really nice but at the rate these pens go through ink it would get expensive buying cartridges all the time.
***** Thanks for your feedback. I went to Michael's and got some Speedball ink of 2 oz. I got blue, gold, and black. Instead of an eyedropper I'm using an old medicinal syringe because the cleaner that came with the pen isn't smaller than the cartridge. I'm actually very surprised by how active you are and I admire you for that! Many RUclipsrs won't respond to comments, so I must congratulate you!
Hello...i'm new to calligraphy and found pilot parallel pens just recently and ordered one online...i'm not familiar with inks yet but i have a water based ink that says its for manga...can i use it to refill the pilot prll pen?thnks...
Uvulus the name of the manga ink i was talking about was kuretake...i've been watching a lot of your videos and others...i noticed most of you guys use ecoline...it made me a little sad that i can't really get those easily from where i come from...anyways i already subscribed weeks ago...keep it up man...i really like your style and ideas...motivates me to practice and do more calligraphy...
+Sangamesh P I believe the converter works with these pens though I haven't tried it myself. You can fill the barrel. I don't do that because the barrel tends to come loose while I'm working and I'd hate to have a spill. I have seen others do it though.
I have used it in them without much trouble. Some colors work better than others. My purple works pretty well but the metallic inks tend to clog pretty quickly. I usually dilute them with a bit of water and this seems to help.
***** I have 2 more questions, is the container you fill up with ink in this video one of the cartridges that come with the pens? And I noticed you used noodler's ink in this, so I assume this : www.amazon.com/Noodlers-Black-Waterproof-Fountain-Pen/dp/B000MVZ2E6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1420825975&sr=8-6&keywords=fountain+pen+ink would be safe to use? Thanks.
Yes, those are the cartridges that come with the pens. I use www.gouletpens.com/N19061/p/N19061 (Bad Black Maccasin) and it works well. I also use Bad Blue Heron wuite a bit with no adverse effects (aside from a bit of staining of the plastic). Noodler's Black should work fine.
+Uvulus Oh okay. But I've found that in my country shipping the nibblers ink is more expensive than just buying new cartridges. But thanks for the anwer.
Inks designed for fountain pens work best. You can use other inks but you may need to clean your pens more often. I mostly use inks from Noodlers, Diamine, and J. Herbin. I also use Ecoline liquid watercolors.
This works pretty well for me. :) Also, I tear it all down every time it runs out to change ink anyway. A converter doesn't seem like it would make things all that much easier to really justify getting one.
I just ED straight onto the nib when I get lazy, which is often. Have you ever tried popping one color into the cart and dipping the nib in another color?
Any fountain pen inks work. India inks work as well but should be cleaned more often. I've even used thinned gauche in them. They are very versatile. J Herbin and Diamine are a couple of other brands of fountain pen ink that I've used. Dr Ph Martin's makes some nice watercolor dyes and india inks too.
I have used sumi e ink and yes it definitely clogs the pens. a good rinse and clean and you are good to go with other inks though. I haven't tried diluting the sumi e ink though... that might work.

You're welcome. :)
Thank you so much. I was wondering till date about buying the ink cartridges. But i got to know how to fill them and what ink needs to be used
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
Put silicone grease on the threads and turn the pen into an eye dropper. Fill the whole barrel full. Massively increase your ink capacity.

Uvulus so you’re saying that ink in contact with the barrel degrades it over time?
@@TeamFish15 No. I've just found that the barrel eventually starts developing stress cracks in the thread area. This could easily just be my heavy handed usage causing this but I figured I'd mention it as it could become an issue.

The flap will close on it's own as you use the pen. I fill up to the line about a centimeter from the top.
Also how to use less ink, i mean my cartridges get used up fast. What to do ??
Can you tell me how can i stop my ink from getting spilled ? Like when i do strokes, the ink get spilled ?
Can i refill it with fountain ink ??? i think its washable but im not sure and confused too..
Fountain pen ink is fine. That's mostly what I use.

Do you think the Daler Rowney calligraphy ink can harm the nib, because it's based on acrylic ? I can find only this near by..
+Borislav Alexandrov If it's acrylic (water based) it should not be harmful to the nib. It may clog though if it's a highly pigmented ink.
Well after a lot of search i found a ECOLINE and i think they are better choice. And thank you for you reply ;)
Can I use "china" ink ? (I ain't sure how in english it's called like)
Elia1995 Maybe. I haven't tried it myself. It's worth a try. The pens are easy to clean if it doesn't work well.
Elia1995 i used china ink and it works :)
Excellent!

Diamine, or any other ink that is designed for fountain pens, will work fine without dilution. :)
***** thanks
hey! thanks for the idea, but i work a lot with watercolor, any waterproof ink (or inks) you can suggest for this pen? thanks beforehand
Noodler's makes quite a few waterproof inks. I have some J. Herbin 1670 inks that seem to hold up well. Test on scrap first of course.
Moises Chavez, what kind of a watercolor? Do you have some email for send me a photo?

Ahh, thanks for the answer, I'll buy new ink just to make sure everything's fine :) I thought i could use mine but I'm not gonna risk it :)

Which ink did u refill
Can ordinary fountain pen ink be used or no. Pl suggest the right ink for refilling
Melven Castelino Yes, I use regular fountain pen ink.
Tnx for the reply
You're welcome. :) Also, I believe the ink used here is Noodler's Apache Sunset.
Thank you for this idea. May I ask where you get an eye dropper like that?
Most drug stores should carry them, I think.
***** Thank you very much, I'll check there.
can i use " Pilot Fountain Pen CON-50 Converter " with Pilot parallel pens?
or can i put ink directly into barrel?
+Sangamesh P I believe the converter works with these pens though I haven't tried it myself. You can fill the barrel. I don't do that because the barrel tends to come loose while I'm working and I'd hate to have a spill. I have seen others do it though.
good demonstrative video. What's name of your bgm?
Thanks. Music is called Hydra by Huma-Huma
Can I use dilute Palace Sumi ink, to refill Pilot Parallel pen?
I haven't tried sumi ok in the pens but i think it will probably clog.
@@Uvulus1 thanks for your respond.
It works with watercolors? or is there some other "homemade" ink to refill?
I use fountain pen inks to refill. Some watercolors may work but you'd need to try them out.
Would Speedball India ink be safe to place in these pens?
I have used it in them without much trouble. Some colors work better than others. My purple works pretty well but the metallic inks tend to clog pretty quickly. I usually dilute them with a bit of water and this seems to help.

No problem. :)
Lorenzo Natale was it 10 cents he tipped u XD jk
can i refill it with ecoline ink ? it work ?
I've seen people use Ecoline in these pens. It should work. Been meaning to get some myself.
can a pentel pen ink be used as a refill to that?
If it's fountain pen ink then yes. If you're talking about pentel cartridges, I'm not sure. haven't tried them.
what I meant about pentel pen ink are those inks that Pilot uses for their markers?
I'm not sure. Marker ink is probably heavily pigmented and may clog the pen. I haven't tried it though so I don't really know.
Thank youd very much for your reply.
Nice
Большое спасибо! Все получилось!👍🤩
can I use normal camlin fountain ink?
Yes, from what I have seen Camlin ink is fine to use. Have not tried it myself though.
What ink you use ?
I use fountain pen inks (Noodler's and Diamine mostly) and Ecoline liquid watercolors.
Can I use india/chinese ink or it can produce future problems? Thanks
Those types of inks do not work well in these pens. They tend to clog the nib.
Why not a CON-20 or CON-50? Although I do this too. :)
This works pretty well for me. :) Also, I tear it all down every time it runs out to change ink anyway. A converter doesn't seem like it would make things all that much easier to really justify getting one.

Thank you very much! I really like your work as well. :)
What kind of ink do you use? Thanks.
I use fountain pen inks. Noodler's, Pilot, Diamine, J. Herbin are some of the brands that I have used.
Thanks, in México is very difficult to find those brands.
put it in description or pop-up window on the video

Yes. Fountain pen inks work the best in these pens.
thanks so much!!
Are you listening to EITS "those who tell the truth..." in the background?
Nah. It's music from the RUclips creator library.
Thanks for saving me money.
You're welcome. :)
can i use permanent ink ?
Yes, there are some permanent fountain pen inks available. Other types of ink will probably work but may clog the pen and make writing difficult.
+Uvulus thank you for reply
Uvulus can you name some brands of ink or put a link where to find permanent waterproof ink to refill these with?
How much do those cost
They're about 10 dollars each on Amazon.
Can i use chinese ink to refill my pilot pen?
It will probably clog the nib and not write very well. Highly pigmented inks don't work very well with these pens.
Uvulus Ok, thanks for reply :B
you can mix it with water. 1/2 water 1/2 ink
works great for me
im so confused bc the ink looked blue yet it was orange !?!?
The ink is orange. The plastic parts of the pen are stained from a blue ink I was using for a while,

I have used sumi e ink and yes it definitely clogs the pens. a good rinse and clean and you are good to go with other inks though. I haven't tried diluting the sumi e ink though... that might work.
thank you for video.
it is easier to do with syringe for me though
Syringe works well too. This is what I had available and have gotten used to using.
You all can use syringe
can i use an inkjet ink as refill?
I had never thought to try that so I'm not sure.
