What kind of black magic is this?! Who has handwriting THAT good.
Wow!! Don't know why I waited so long to watch this!!!
Why doesn't Rachel do more videos?
She did a great job!!
It would definitely be great if she did some videos regularly.
Rachel rocks
it's 2020 and here we are enjoying this video Thanks Rachel
Hey now, that's my wife you're talking about there ;) The 6.0mm is cool but HUGE, the 1.5mm or 2.4mm are a little more 'useable' day to day.
Great video Rachel. I am glad Brian mentioned it today in the Q & A. I am going to pick up a pair of these pens, they look fun! Thank you.
Rachel, the was an excellent video! You have a nice clear voice and your instructions were very understandable. I really enjoyed your solo. You should do more! Ready to try the parallel!
Yeah, I wish they made a smaller one, too. The nibs are really smooth though, I've used a bunch of them and I'll stand by that statement. They do have to be held in a specific way though, and it can take some getting used to.
Well I'll be darned, that's the first I've heard of that! Neat.
Always great to see Rachel
@sewn3 Yes it is on our site. I can't link to it here (RUclips won't let me), but it's the No. 16 Rhodia Dotpad.
@fiberdrunk, I've heard of others converting these to eyedropper pens as well. I wouldn't recommend it for carrying around, but it would work if it's going to be a desk pen.
@TheSt777n, these are cool pens, I think you'll enjoy it.
I will be getting one and injecting the cartridge with Apache sunset
I think it depends on the ink...some 'china ink' or 'india ink' is really just a water-based ink made to look very black like the traditional inks do (Pelikan Fount India is a good example) and those will work okay. Truly traditional inks will generally be made with something much thicker than water (often shellac) and those you'll want to keep out of your fountain pens since they won't flow properly and can clog them terribly if they dry inside.
@LotusSitar Yes, you definitely can. You'll need two pens if you want to be able to do that cool color transitioning effect, though.
@MyTrueStory85 If you're using the Pilot Mixable cartridges, then it's as easy as popping a new one in. If you want to use other inks, you can either refill empty cartridges, or you can grease up the threads and fill the whole body with ink (eyedropper conversion).
Excellent video. A great explanation of how the parallel pens work.
nice vid! I went to a store but they didnt have one so I ordered one and bought a pilot con 50 cartridge.
"My handwriting is not fabulous"
I think is looks pretty good.
You did well for a first video.
Rachel, loved this video, your voice and writing are so nice. Now I just need to get those parallel pens. Next order?
They're nifty little pens. Especially if you're wanting to get into calligraphy and/or letter without the mess of dip pens. I just order the 1.5mm version! - Colin
Thanks the best review of the pilot parallel pen yet in youtube
I am a professional calligrapher of 35 years. The Pilot Parallel pens were designed for calligraphy, and they are the most versatile calligraphy fountain pens on the market. I have a set but seldom use them because you cannot use pigmented inks in them. Therefore, I tend to stay with Speedball dip pens.
The converter CAN be used for bottled inks, even though the instructions say it is for cleaning only. In fact, this is the exact same converter that comes with the Pilot Metropolitan. It must be pushed in firmly to seat it.
The nib on my 2.4mm is kinda "separated", like a "V", when see it from the side way. I'm guessing it's because I put too much pressure on either side of the nib when I try to get the ink to flow after leave them for a couple days (I use W&N Calligraphy ink to fill the barrel instead of cartridge). I was wondering if there is anyway possible to get the 2 plates of the nib to be "close together" again. I have little/no problem writing with it on 2.4mm sides but couldn't write w/ thin parallel part
What size would you recommend for highlighting? Is 6 mm too broad or is it just enough to highlight a line with just one stroke?
A vacuum :) My wife and I were working out of our house at the time, and we had to shoot all our videos in our bedroom. Hence, the floor lamp and vacuum in the background. Turn 90 degrees and you would see a pile of dirty laundry in the corner ;)
You can refill cartridges, sure...but I have no idea what 'normal chinese ink' is. As long as you're using ink intended for fountain pens, you'll be good.
Hi! I know this video is really old, but I just discovered these pens, and I wanna know if they can be refilled with normal fountain pen ink.
Thanks!
Yes.
@@x-changex-outx-oner8224 thank you very much!
You can find some customized ones with 1mm, 2mm, 3mm and 4.5mm nibs. I believe John Neal is one of them. I also don't have any flow problems with mines.
Excellent!!!! I've got to order 2 of these!
Great idea, the blending trick is a lot of fun. - Colin
Thanks for sharing this informational video.
@mokmmo23, thanks! It's a bit confusing trying to talk intelligently, demo a pen and work the camera while straddling a tripod between your legs!
@TheVincentmc, thank you! They are some unique pens, definitely benefit by showing a video
That is so cool! Thanks for this video!
yeahh your right i just got done using my rainbow color set.. good feel to the pen on the 6mm made me waste all of them now i have to buy more at ebay..
Each pen is $10, and we just used the cartridges that came with them, so this setup was $20. A pack of cartridges will run you a few more bucks...that's all you need!
Great video, this helped me a lot :D
Sure thing, Dave! -Brian Goulet
I know this is a stupid question, but i was wondering if you can switch out different cartriges on the same pen?
I was wondering if these.pens work well with shimmer inks or sheening ones in the converter? Or with that clog it and should stick with "normal" inks
great review, but where did u get that notepad is it on your site?
Rachel is Adorable
What kind of notebook is it? I can't find paper with that kind of dots.
Hey great video, one question though, it is possible to refill the cartridges with normal chinese ink?
Off topic question: what is the red handled thing with the buttons and a speaker that is leaning up against the wall (seen at the end of the video)?
I think he means the pigmented black india ink. I tried that once and it clogs the pen real easily, but if one does do that, it is very easy to take the pen apart and clean it :D.
Hi looking at buying the caligraphy set of these pens and wanted to get convertors and in the video they call the appropriate converter the Pilot Con-50 but I only see Con-40 and Con-70 on your site would those work as well?
The Con-40 is the way to go. It's the new version of the Con-50 that fits the Parallel as well. Con-70 is too large. - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company thank you so much!
are these pens still available in the UK
Not Fabulous? I'd kill to have handwriting that nice! Are the ink cartridges universal size or proprietary? I know the Pilot Con-50 cartridge converter will work but will these pens accept standard universal ink cartridges? Just wondering. Thanks.
Hey there! I am sooooo confused on what is the proper kind of ink to use on each kind of pen.! I mean I've heard you can't do Calligraphy with fountain pen ink. But, is it the same if you use ink for Calligraphy on a fountain pen? And anyways how are these types of ink called? Could you guys please help me?
+Zefy P. "calligraphy" is a term that's thrown around pretty loosely. "Real" calligraphy (and often how things are marketing) is often done with dip pens, which use a type of thicker ink that's not good for fountain pens. These products are usually found in art stores. Fountain pens need fountain pen ink, and will never use ink marketed as "calligraphy", "India", or "lawyers" ink. -Brian Goulet
Wow...now it seems pretty clear to me.You really helped me! Thanks a lot! :D
Just got the 1.5mm. I wish they would make a thinner one :/ Anyways, the review is almost completely accurate- the only thing is that it doesn't flow as smoothly as you imply in this video. For the most part, though; 20 dollars for a pen and a pack of mixable colors is a great deal!
Rachel, this is an older video so now, would you still recommend this pen for beginners or another one now? Thanks!
Not Rachel, but the Parallels are really easy to use & learn lettering techniques. Even mixing the ink like she show's here is easy. Great for beginners. - Colin
Thanks for sharing! Please can you recommend a lightfast ink for the PPP?
Noodler's has a number of eternal/fade-resistant/lightfast inks. Bad Belted Kingfisher is a favorite of mine: www.gouletpens.com/products/noodlers-bad-belted-kingfisher-3oz-bottled-ink . You can see the full ink properties chart for Noodler's here: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2603/2528/files/noodlers-ink-properties.pdf - Colin
HOW MUCH DID YOU GET THE WHOLE SET FOR?
May not be a pro with the camera yet, but her handwriting is utterly perfect, especially compared to Brian's handwriting.
can we fill ordinary ink in the cartridge
Melven Castelino yes, absolutely. If you want to mix the inks in the pen tips you might have to take some of the inks you use into consideration, but there's nothing about these pens that'll be different about any other pens when you're inking them up. -Brian Goulet
Or as beginner, just start with one pen and practice?
I would start with 1 pen to get the hang of it. If you wanted to try the 2 pen ink mixing, get the same size. - Colin
Could you please tell me what the "converter" thing is that you can use to refill the pens?
Con-50
what is the best nib size for beginner calligraphy??
PaperBat999 I personally like the 1.5 and 2.4 mm and find them the easiest to use :) -Margaret
GIRLS JUST LOVE TO TALK.. :) EVERYONE WAS ALL SERIOUS IN THE LAST VIDEOS IVE SEEN. THEN I SEE HER AND I AM LIKE DAAAM!!.. LOL GOOD VIDEO I JUS GOT THE 6.0 MM PEN BUT I SHOULD OF BOUGHT THE 2.4 MM OR 1.5 MM LESS INK..
Very cute!
can that converter be used to clean other fountain pens as well? instead of a bulb syringe (cant get any where i live)
It may randomly work for some, but I just tried it with a handful of pens & it doesn't fit. Seems specifically designed for the Parallel. - Colin
ahh what a shame, thanx for finding out for me, need to find other alternatives, do u have any recomendations?
Not sure of any alternatives, but you may be able to find bulb syringes at a pharmacy. It's helpful with both babies & ear health, just happens to be perfect with fountain pens. You could also find them online, either through our store or Amazon. - Colin
Is that Brian's wife? She has a good voice for videos.
Yeah it is, I wonder why she doesn't do more videos? I agree she has a good voice for videos
It's a shame they don't have 1.9 :(
Ha. I thought it was a funky electronic musical instrument. :-)
Whats that converter called?
ItsGin Pilot calls it the 'cleaning converter', though it's the same one that comes with a Pilot Metropolitan. It's essentially a more bare-bones Con-20. -Brian Goulet
The name is at the very top of the paper: Rhodia.
Haha, no, just a boring old vacuum ;)
