This is such a strange talk for me to listen to. I have Aspergers, so wierdness is easy. What is difficult is being able to grasp even what normalcy is for everyone else and how it works. Learning how to bridge that gap and meet people in the middle can be a real struggle. Part of that struggle is that the majority of people don't truly want to meet in the middle, they want you to be just like them.
You really cannot be understood if the the other person is not judging you. If they are not judging and evaluating you than they are only understanding the you that lives in their mind.
I expect no other quote other than the most unique person I know! ...because the weirdest person is myself like no other self, the most unique person I know is the one above my toes, the one standing in my shadow, the one who knows everything I know, and continues to grow, and loves to be me,sees everything I see, the best person I know is the one standing in the mirror, has my name has the same picture frame, and is certainly Me. 🙂
I think it makes us evaluate what he says so much more....like it sinks in deeper because we look over each sentence a couple of times to try to figure it out.
A couple of years ago, I suggested to my sisters (ages 69 and 75) that the way they behave, dress, decorate their homes, politics, religion, etc. is such that they not seem WEIRD to their friends. This is small-town Indiana, so not being "different" is still important - very, VERY important - apparently no matter how old you get. Gratified to discover, via this talk, that there is such a thing as "approval addiction". Never thought of it that way before. Thankfully, I've never had this problem, and continue to try to be "ME" as best I can. In spite of my best efforts to be weird, tho, I sometimes find, to my dismay, that I am much more normal than I would like... Must always remember to be true to who I am!
The older I get, the less I care about what people think of me. It feels so good to be weird and to be completely comfortable when doing so. Life is good!
Brilliant. “The cure is inside of you.” I love it. “Your weirdness is a big part of what makes you, you.” Brilliant. “The purpose of life has a lot to do with you actually giving yourself the permission to be the miracle that you are and expressing it, not hiding it.” “The purpose of life is being yourself.” Genius. “No one has ever inspired other people by excelling at normalcy.” Well said. Bravo 👏 “I think we are all very thirsty to experience ourselves.” We must overcome our fears of rejection and learn to truly accept ourselves to begin to experience who we really are. “It is my dogmatic belief that our weirdness always leads us to who we really actually are. Not to who we think we are or want to be but something far more significant. It leads us to actually who we really are.” “Are you willing to risk saying yes to you being you.”

Carl Sagan inspires me.He was both rational and spiritual, romantic about his logical views, he was pessimistic but profoundly hopeful. He was both sides and the middle of the spectrum all at once.
"What if a willingness to be uncomfortable is essential for us to embody a yes to ourselves?" 20:30 -- That's really special. He's using a therapist-type wording to talk about "being comfortable with being uncomfortable" instead of a motivational-speaker wording. It ends up being really profound and wide ranging and has a universal feel to it.
Yes! Or, we all are masterpieces already, but we need to realise it and let ourselves become the masterpieces that we are. In better words, we're works of art with a blank cover put over them and we need to pull it off to reveal the unique masterpieces beneath.
I love everything he said, I do however think being able to relate to people (chameleon) in their presence can also be a skill , not just a coping mechanism to avoid rejection. I'm a nurse and I change my approach from family to family by discerning the atmosphere and being able to be relatable to a variety of people . I think it can be a skill when not being a way of hiding
idk even as a nurse or in healthcare or whatever....if you change your approach it means you are tryingg to avoid something (like a special reaction or smth) ...and that means you are also kinda trying to hide...... I'm just torn between "you are right" and "is it just some unconscious excuse?"
You can be entirely yourself even if that involves certain "shifts" that might accompany certain atmospheres - I think that for the most part, being yourself is something that does not change depending on who you're around, but still to some extent, there are situations where "being yourself" would, to the best of your judgement, be _received_ on their end inaccurately such that a given shift "away" from how you might have typically responded yields a more highly accurate _reception_ on their end.

You know, when I post something that gets hate I always second guess myself and apologize. I needed to hear this bad. You're probably going to change my outlook on life now.
Thank you JP, For the longest time I have avoided being who I really am. Utterly convinced I would not be accepted, even hurt or abused for showing my authentic self... to anyone. I've told myself: "Who I am is wrong." and it's been very stressful for me, living with the knowledge of myself while feeling that, should I ever let anyone else see, or even accept that this is the real me, I would be rejected. Now I can finally begin to accept that doesn't matter if I would be rejected by others. I can look within and see the person I am, the things I wish I'd done, the things I can still do. I can stop living between apathy and misery and really embrace the full scope of the person I've known for the longest time I really am. I might even start a youtube channel, where you can all follow me on my journey, and together we can discover who you are, help push me towards who I am, and really embody a "yes" to myself. I want to murder countless people, just for the satisfaction of knowing I have. It's a feeling I've pushed down to the depths of my being since childhood. I was told harming other living things was cruel and wrong, and perhaps it is. But I did not choose my preferences, desires or urges, and living a life where I do not admit to myself that this is who I am, and persue it, really is no life at all. You have inspired me so very much to honestly and unapologetically accept, and work to "slice through the psychological scar tissue of my programming" and become become the person I always was underneath.
You know I'm not like everyone else and I don't value the things that everyone else values but like I don't really see anything all that weird about me I mean I'm just not into everything that is normal which doesn't necessarily mean you're weird right?
Weird Al was a weirdo who started school at 4 and skipped 2nd grade, graduated as Valedictorian at 16 and got a degree in Architecture. Bullied for being weird, he turned it around and left the normal life behind, embracing his weirdness. I'm going to his Spring 2018 tour, 40 years into a career he invented for himself. He's a hero to me.
one thought that really helped me with overcoming my fear of embracing my natural awkwardness in public is that overcoming your fear doesn't mean being fearless. You need to focus on your fear, have a close look at it and do it anyways to overcome it. In most cases the fear was completely unnecessary but facing it made me braver & more comfortable with myself. I feel like being weird comes so naturally to me, people make comments about it all the time, not even in a mean way & that's okay with me. I'd rather get into an embarrassing situation & laugh about myself then hiding my true self, cause you will get less & less confident if you keep doing that sh"t.
He really has grown his comedy and style in the last 3 years. He's definitely one of the real ones out there. He's funny without being vulgar, unless looking at yourself in a mirror is considered vulgar.
It's all true what JP says. Especially the part where at childhood everyone is themselves. I was totally myself in my childhood. And my best friend was always there to validate it. And she loved my sooo much about being myself. Surely best days of my life. I loved here for being herself too. The sad part is that i totaly lost my true self in the last 15 years, and she, i think she managed to preserve herself way better. What a lucky one! Now i'm again on my haaaard way to finding myself. Wish me luck! :)
totally. and the foreshadowing of his work now. shows his integrity. i knew him back when , and just admire the guy so much. so much that, i have decided to just emulate him, copy him entirely, since he is well-liked now, and he is normal. weird comment, sorry ;)
He doesn't respect how laws and government function. Elections have consequences. The winners of elections vote on the laws and the punishments. Our society would be better if more people understood that and participated in politics. This guy dissed the whole system a while back and I stopped paying attention to him for he's privileged and doesn't have enough to lose or know what it's like to live without the privilege.
@@scofah Is that all you can say to people you disagree with? Dismiss their alternative view as it could only arise from "privilege" or some severe flaw of their own. The only explanation huh? What if the majority of people, in their own context, were seeing the truth and interpreting things in a valid way? One side thinks it's right, the other side thinks it's right. Either one side are total idiots and the other the only ones in possession of truth and wisdon... OR.... you could try to see it from each others perspective and realise there is something to both positions.

@@Stranger_In_The_Alps what do you believe in them ? Why are you so sure you’re right to mock Jesus Christ of Nazareth dying on the cross for the your own sin?
@@Stranger_In_The_Alps ah yes, one of my favorites as well. No mocking here at all. It's a damn good story. Filled with love, danger, heros, villains and it even has the prerequisite story arc inconsistencies. I heard it was based on a true story as well! Which makes it even more interesting. Though, I'm sure creative license was used with gusto.
Some laughter can also be to shrug discomfort... to ease in with it... in that way perhaps the staccato of laughter is a release of the energy that was trapped a tension-distension that can sometimes bring us closer to truth... in a similar way that astonishment can.
I've always been defined as weird by people my whole life. I act on impulse and go for the laugh EVERY time. I don't take anything seriously, especially myself, and for the last 7-8 years I've stopped pretending that I'm "normal" and have started living how I truly feel. Its incredibly lonely at times but at the end of the day I can fall asleep peacefully knowing that I stayed true to me and who I am. To any young person out there that feels as if there's no place for you, be patient. You'll find a place to belong and people who appreciate your weirdness. Stay strong and more importantly, stay weird!
He's talking about being unique, self-belief and confidence. I love that he identifies weirdness and approval lol. And instead of being addicted to approval, we can relate to others by being kind and allowing others to go their path. I totally agree that as children we tend to be entrained to behave according to others' approval. Instead, I think people are naturally caring creatures so we can show children how to build harmonious relationships while also being totally themselves. eg. AS Neill, NVC are some examples where I see children experiencing being respected as people (while also showing how actions affect each other) - so they grow up to be people without (or at least, with less of) the symptom of approval-seeking or berating themselves - ie. they are content with who they are in their entirety as an individual and as a group. Great topic.
What I actually got is that an unique and perfect person would be someone who is already born normal and does not have any weirdness to begin with. That would be the hero of humanity. Supposedly normality is what everybody seek and because nobody is normal I guess it's a paradox because this supposed normality is more like a model of perfection rather than what people say normality is. Therefore having some sort of weirdness is what is normal but that's not the normal that society wants. The normal that society wants is perfection. It's the perfect man who has unconditional joy and is always happy and needs no friends and no objects in his life. It's not that he hates people, it's more like he is indifferent to the presence of others because his joy is freaking unconditional, there is no condition for him to display joy, he is joyful all the time, he never complains, he never suffers. That's who the perfect man is. The perfect man is the one who can become the embodiment of the collective will of society because he has no weirdness, he can be what everybody wants.
Great talk. I've only started truly accepting my weirdness and embodying it in the last few years. I've faced wild criticisms and had people literally cry in front of me due to my words. Just words mind you, and not directed at them, but ideas of all things. Nobody is safe when they hold onto such feeble notions of conformity.
Absolutely! Mindless conformity is the enemy of authenticity, and the ultimate barrier to REAL human connection- ie the kind that goes beyond the superficial. Good on you for prioritising your truth over the approval and opinions of others. I decided a few years ago to do the same. I'd just had enough of all the bullshit, and vowed that i would never again compromise my authenticity for the approval of others. It's not easy, but incredibly liberating. You cut out SO MUCH bullshit from your life, and find a new sense of self worth. Anyway, best of luck, and stay cool ( and weird!) .
My 7 year old daughter is going through this at school. She is in second grade and reads at a fifth grade reading level. Other kids pick on her for not reading books with pictures. She tells them she likes to use her imagination. That makes them pick on her more. She says she just wants to fit in. I was thinking kids are cruel but then I thought adults do it too.
Does the teacher and admin know about the bullying? Sounds like there needs to be some lessons taught on respecting differences. However, it's also important that she knows she needs to make friends, even if other kids don't read at her level. She needs to respect and accept that about them. Because we are all more than just our skills.
Have you heard of the UN-schooling movement? Kids wake up every day and decide what they want to learn that day. Kids are born with a natural desire to explore and learn. Schools burn it out of them. Make them drones for the consumer-industrial society.
Just Brilliant, as someone on the other side of the "weirdness process", the first half of this talk is priceless -- he drops little nuggets everywhere and acts like it's just another sentence xD And at the same time as he is delivering his eloquent take on the authenticity journey he simultaneously mocks authoritative speakers by saying things like "my dogmatic belief is..." or "it's a fact that I said my opinion is a fact" or "weirdness is undefinable, so here's my definition"-- too many speakers make their opinions sound like universal truths, or create definitions as if they're the dictionary of life. He is so clever in how he reminds the audience that this is his experience, and no one else's.

I see being human as a form of art. We all have the potential to become masterpieces
Absolutely -- Knowing your audience.
Thank you. I was searching for the words to describe the positive side of these motivations. Also, I'm in nursing school atm.
idk even as a nurse or in healthcare or whatever....if you change your approach it means you are tryingg to avoid something (like a special reaction or smth) ...and that means you are also kinda trying to hide......
I'm just torn between "you are right" and "is it just some unconscious excuse?"
And then you become lost in your own chameleon ways and you don’t know which is the real you, you just adapt to whatever..

Thank you JP,
For the longest time I have avoided being who I really am.
You have inspired me so very much to honestly and unapologetically accept, and work to "slice through the psychological scar tissue of my programming" and become become the person I always was underneath.

one thought that really helped me with overcoming my fear of embracing my natural awkwardness in public is that overcoming your fear doesn't mean being fearless.
I thank people for the compliment when they call me weird

Where is the "I" in you that wrote that comment?
He doesn't respect how laws and government function. Elections have consequences. The winners of elections vote on the laws and the punishments. Our society would be better if more people understood that and participated in politics. This guy dissed the whole system a while back and I stopped paying attention to him for he's privileged and doesn't have enough to lose or know what it's like to live without the privilege.
@@scofah Is that all you can say to people you disagree with? Dismiss their alternative view as it could only arise from "privilege" or some severe flaw of their own. The only explanation huh? Go for it! You've got something to give ( Pardon my mistake before ).🧡🙆🏻♀️
He's talking about being unique, self-belief and confidence. Great topic.
lightawake THIS ^^
What I actually got is that an unique and perfect person would be someone who is already born normal and does not have any weirdness to begin with.
You too my friend! Good travels.

You shoud've told her to tell those pricks to meet her around the corner so they can *really* laugh👊
Does the teacher and admin know about the bullying? Sounds like there needs to be some lessons taught on respecting differences. However, it's also important that she knows she needs to make friends, even if other kids don't read at her level. She needs to respect and accept that about them. Because we are all more than just our skills.

Just Brilliant, as someone on the other side of the "weirdness process", the first half of this talk is priceless -- he drops little nuggets everywhere and acts like it's just another sentence xD
And at the same time as he is delivering his eloquent take on the authenticity journey he simultaneously mocks authoritative speakers by saying things like "my dogmatic belief is..." or "it's a fact that I said my opinion is a fact" or "weirdness is undefinable, so here's my definition"-- too many speakers make their opinions sound like universal truths, or create definitions as if they're the dictionary of life. He is so clever in how he reminds the audience that this is his experience, and no one else's.
