I've lived in London, Paris and several cities in the north of Spain. Madrid really is the city that never sleeps: you go out on a Wednesday to have a drink with a friend, meet other people and have a fun night out and get home at 7am. Wonderful city.

Just would be nice to add Plaza Santa Ana, Plaza Espana with Cervantes and Don Quixote, Templo do Debod and Chueca area for those who don't know this city yet. Just as another main tourists points on this city. And actually you're not right to say Gran Via is the biggest shopping because it's not. There is a Primark, Zara, H&M and shoes stores but the biggest shopping area is just from Plaza Callao through El Corte Ingles until Puerta del Sol when you can find hundreds of shops with all famous marks and names. And also more shops than Gran Via is at Hortaleza - one of blocks from Gran Via and it's typical shopping street. Just be correct if you talk about something.
Well im from Madrid and just for a little tip jajaj but san Miguel Market is soooooo expensive is better to go to malasaña or streets near gran via. They will be more cheap, but if you dont mind to pay a little bit more mercado de san miguel is your place, the quality is sooooo good.

Hi Anna, it is very easy to get to the centre of Madrid via metro or autobus from practically anywhere in the surrounding areas. It is super well connected. I will be there in a couple of weeks & also in December, but have rented a room in a flat via airbnb as it's a lot cheaper & I get to stay with locals! I lived there almost 7 years ago now and travel, food and rent was very cheap. Of course it has changed quite a bit but I believe it hasn't changed that much. I'll find out when I go back!

anna mp No problem! Yes February is pretty cold. I remember I moved there in October and it was still pretty nice weather up until November. I was very shocked at how cold the winter months were as I expected it to still be warm somehow. It was even colder than London at the time and rained and snowed pretty bad but that didn't take away from the experience one bit. If you can, take a day trip to Madrid once you're in Barcelona. You will get a better sense of it
