Could you still be happy if you were dirt poor & homeless?

- I recently watched an encounter between two strangers that really touched my heart. It prompted me to contact one of the individuals He iwas a man who appeared to be homeless perhaps living or camping on the streets living in poverty with little to nothing as far as material goods. Yet he displayed a joy that was hard to understand given his apparent circumstances. Inwas determined tonfund out why. I was determined to find out how someone in his situation could exude such joy. After my brief encounter with him I concluded that this man knew the true meaning of gratitude, even for the smallest things in life. Even a gift as small as a container of fruit. I left from my interaction with him determined to try to be more grateful for what I have instead of focusing on what I don't have. I hope this videonwill be an encouragement to all who watch it. Thank you, Carol, for caring enough to give us the privilege of meeting Derrick. I know he walked away from the encounter with dignity and a renewed faith that God is there walking by his side. I'd describe your meeting as one earth bound angel running into another angel. God's grace is everywhere..........................
Thank you Maria. It truly was my privilege to meet Derek and be given a reminder of what faith and gratitude look like.
I'd also rather give food than money to people asking for help. I'm in my backyard early this morning feeling gratitude for my beautiful backyard and listening to the birds.
Me too
Kindness can go a long long way
When you give to the least of man you give to me. Jesus! When you have nothing you have nothing to lose. Sometimes we are alone, hungry, homeless or ill to draw us closer to God. God bless! 🙏❤️
Sometimes we entertain angels unaware.
He brought tears to my eyes. What a kind soul.

A TRUE FOLLOWER OF CHRIST JESUS.😊 🫂✝️
I grew up really poor, but my mom gave us so much love that I didn’t realize I was poor until I got in the junior high. Thanks for sharing.
Never knew I was poor growing up until the other kids at school let me know! ❤️

We see evidence of prayer at work every day and everywhere around us. The power of prayer is there. I'll pray for Derrick and for those souls who are being effected by weather conditions in the Houston area.
Am praying for them.
@@justmaria5806 True. We were just praying for rain a week ago…
*not me… I’ve been through too many Houston floods.
I think people happy with so little are filled with the Holy Spirit. I would have liked to hear him sing. 💖💖💖
His singing certainly blessed me.
Great vid Carol.
We all have to be thankful for each thing we have, so many do not.
Hugs
What a guy! In his heart, he has learned what is very valuable and what is not.....I hope I can learn that more than I ever have. Thanks Carol for bringing this very valuable video to us. Thank you
I had gone into Aldi to buy several pounds of grapes because they were on sale. When I came out there was a Spanish speaking lady and her beautiful daughter (9 or 10). She had a sign that they needed help, I pulled out a couple pounds of grapes, and gave them to the child and she was delighted. My feel good moment for the day.
Be careful, I delt with street dwellers on a daily basis, they can be charmers.
Always be guided by the Holy Spirit in helping others then you will know whether to help or not and how to help.
The joy of the Lord is my strength! There was a time when I had money and I didn’t pray much anymore. One day the Lord spoke to my heart and said, you don’t talk to me anymore, I thought oh well. Then again the Lord spoke to me and said, you don’t talk to me anymore, and I still just pushed it off until about a year later (2008)when my husband lost most of his business. Guess who was talking to God then? All the money in the world will not bring happiness, but a relationship with Jesus Christ, and being filled with holy spirit will bring great peace and joy to your soul!
Amen. Sometimes it takes a lot to bring us closer to God.
The Joy of the Lord can transcend life's challenges 🙏🏾
It can indeed
He has peace within himself for whatever he is seeking for the answer. I too, found that out of peace within myself.
You are blessed to have found such a peace.
Derek was filled w/joy and gratitude to receive watermelon, a smoothie, and a hot meal. Look how many people his joy and gratitude has touched watching this vid!! When you have done without, you appreciate even the smallest of things. Nothing is promised, not even Life. Live each moment in kindness, Love and gratitude.
"This Joy that I have, The world didn't give it to me.
The world didn't give it, The world can't take it away!" ~ old gospel song
Derek's outlook on life is really an example.
I love hearing stories about people helping others especially those that are less fortunate. It is such a heart warming story. I Love this.. Thank you for this video.. ❤❤❤
Yes,good food, good music,,a kind soul, singing,,,that makes me happy too.Thnx Carole and Derek make makes me
Carol, so nice of you to buy him a meal and music💕
He actually was the one blessing me😊
My happiness is not based on how much I have, but on how little I need. Great topic, Carol!
Excellent point. I may have to "borrow" that one!
🙏🏽Thank you for sharing ✌️💖🤟
Keeping it simple and count your blessings
Good Afternoon Carol, Thank You for speaking to this man and Being so Kind to Him. God made Us All in Different Ways in His Own Image. Some People like to judge from what they see on the outside and Doesn't know their story. God Love Us "Good or Bad" and He's the only one to Judge Us. Thank You Again Enjoyed and Blessings 🙏❤️🥰😇 From Pennsylvania,USA
This almost made me cry! I've been listening to Christian radio and they were talking about having joy in spite of our circumstances. It's been hard dealing with my situation but I'm learning not to let it bring me down. Being thankful for all that I have.
Listening to uplifting messages does have an impact.on us for sure.
It's called true gratitude. Bless him. 🙏
Hi Carol, hope you are having a good day and weekend ❤️.
Sometimes little things mean so much. Thank you kind sir.
What a beautiful and inspiring story. Watching this man be grateful is a life lesson for all of us.💜😇🌹🥀
It is certainly a wonderful lesson.
Brought tears of joy to my heart. Thank you Carol and Derek 💋🙏🙏❣️
Kindness, that is what makes “some people” happy! It takes so little to extend and yet the recipients are so grateful and happy.
He truly knows the worth of his alabaster box, hallelujah, hallelujah, glory be to God Almighty. May the Lord truly continue to follow him and bless him in Jesus name. Thank you Carol blessings to you in Jesus name
God Bless Deric, what a beautiful soul!
Bless you sweetie for all things you do
This almost made me cry
We should be soooooo thankful
I'm crying. What an amazing encounter!
It really touched me as well
Just like Job!! HALLELUJAH!! Bless him Lord!
I was laughed in unbelief to the fact that the smallest gift was the biggest one of all. I told them. Ive had struggles I had enough then over abundance to nothing at all and even with onlyvwhat was necessary and it was okay . Through it all I was in continuación grateful when I'd receive the smallest thing that was needed.
OK CAROL, I'm over here balling all over my meal.... What an awesome encounter to witness & have... I wholeheartedly believe that Derrick will bounce back eventually.
Me, too! I'm like, well, at least now I don't have to add salt to my soup because my tears have done that!😭
This really touched my heart.
I guess this is the ol’ Half empty or half full.
There are angels among us. Thank you Carol to recognizing one.
Derek had such a spirit ot gratitude that made me have to rethink all my meaningless complaints!
❤❤ love you Derek. Thank you
I think Derek's faith is real and fills his heart with comfort and joy. Thanks for sharing this, Carol (wish I could have heard him sing -- but copyright rules, I know).
I really wanted to video.him singing but I would have gotten a copyright strike as you noted😒
Thanks for sharing Carol!
What a touching and humbling time in Derrick's day❤..stayed Blessed Carol... we ❤and appreciate your stories...
Love Jim and Dawn Turner aka The Turners On The Road
Thank you. These videos do not get nearly as many views as my other videos. But these videos are so meaningful to me and I love sharing them.
I believe Derek never lost his innocence..that's what makes him happy and closer to God...❤
Amen🙏🤍 Praise God!
Carol, what a kind video! We need to treat homeless persons with compassion. They are at the bottom 😊of their lives! Sometimes we just want get on with our business and not be bothered with it. In reality I could happen to any one of us. If every one of us could help, maybe there would not be people on the street!
Imagine if every pe4rson who could helped to the extent they could homelessness would be solved!!
I think when you’re poor you’re unencumbered from stress. It can be liberating to be free from responsibility and bills. There’s a LOT of unhappy rich people. I’ve become very fond of the saying “I don’t have everything I want, but I have everything I need”. For a lot of people, having everything they need can actually be very little. Doesn’t that sound refreshing to be free from the trappings of our materialistic society?
There are many kinds of freedom. Material freedom is certainly one of them
I love when you do touching stuff like this. I know how that feels when you're homeless and someone gives you something. You can't believe it. He'll sleep good tonight with a full belly.
I love doing videos like this. They don't get that many views, but that's OK. I believe is important to share content like this.
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I feel that way about the close to heart work I do too! 👍
Wonderful man!
Stuff often leads to stress, in my opinion. If I choose to look for joy in my life, I start by looking for all that I am grateful for, and I have a lot to be grateful for!
Absolutely. The more we look for things to be grateful for the more we find.
That brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for reminding us we are all God's children.
Awww 😆
What I love about you and your channel Carol is that you always talk about the deepest most real things in life. It's a pleasure to find a channel where issues of the soul and spirit are talked about thank you so much I'll see you at 3:00
❤See you at 3
Carol. what a touching encounter you had with Derick. I just knew in my heart before it came up on the video that you would do something for Derick so I wasn't surprised when you took him to lunch. When you told about him singing How great is our God, my eyes filled with tears. I think those who have very little seem to really appreciate small blessings.
This man though whatever got him on the streets houseless shows he has never turned his back on the Father as so many would. I'm a true believer in it's better to give. The man who gave him the watermelon gave him what the bible describes as "and then they gave much". As little as it was to him the meal you feed him was equal you gave him in his heart I bet. You gave him much and you will be blessed and so will the other man in return for it. I wish you could've played his singing. Blessings!
Hi Carol, I watched your live on the 4th. I was so hoping we could hear this man sing! Why he's so grateful, I would never try to guess, I don't know his story. 🙏❤️✌️
I wanted to share him singing but I would have gotten a copyright strike😒
I forgot about that, shucks 🌟
God Bless you for helping him.. ❤❤❤
❤ open heart ❤️
When one has nothing the only stresses in life are finding food and shelter. Then when we find a beautiful soul like yours GLOW we know there's still kindness in this world.
This video brought tears to my eyes as I am so close to being in the same situation and it scares me.
Given the current financial climate with rent and food costs you are not alone. Do you at least have a vehicle that you could use should you find yourself not having housing?
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 yes, I have a vehicle so I will at least have shelter.
I was homeless once. I hadn't eaten in 3 days, couldn't even get .99 cents for a hot dog. I would have been thrilled with watermelon. God bless him!
I hope you are in a better situation now. God bless Derek and you
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 Oh yes! full time nomad and loving life! Thank you
I am so happy to hear that 😊
Yes, God bless you both.
Godliness with contentment is great gain my Bible says ❤
Yes indeed.😇
Thank you for sharing, it has lifted up my heart🥰
I am so glad to hear that. It lifted mine as well.
My eyes are welling wiith tears seeing God's love shing through you both. Thank you for sharing this encounter.
Love is an action verb. Blessings to you and Derrick!
Bible says better to give than to receive... Naked we came in to this world... Naked we will leave out.... All the material things we hv or can hv... Can't take it with us when we leave this world...
We shall continue acknowledging God* 1st in Jesus name
Not enough of us appreciate the little things or to receive something without expectations. So many think more is better, it is not.
Derek's attitude really made me step back and reassess my attitude about some things.
Carol, knowing Jesus as your Savior
Happiness is a state of mind not dependent on my current, past, or future economic condition. For example, today I bought a soda and it brought happiness., I haven't had soda in years but I saw a grape crush today and bought it. It was refreshing and delightful and made me very happy. Ah, the simple things. You are such a beautiful blessing to everyone around you Carol, may God bless you as well always. A grateful heart is my answer to your question.
Thanks you so much ❤❤❤😢
The best way, I can explain why somebody with nothing can be joyful, and you said happy is that their joy comes from Jesus, who is deep down inside of him, and is a fountain of joy in a believer’s heart. Happiness can be a Chinese meal or a smoothie, or a good circumstance at the moment, but happiness can come and go. Joy, however, is deeper And Derek seemed to have a fountain of joy that never runs dry, Jesus!
Yes he did.
Jesus Christ died for our Sins according to the scriptures and that he was Buried and he rose Again the third day praise God praying for everyone everyday God bless you all
I love your videos, Carol. You should have a zillion views. You bring out the best in others.. You are a Blessing to me. Thank you.
Love this ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this video. I love you. Peace and love to you
😢 what a sad and what happened to america and its people? but im so happy to hear and watch him Glorifying Jesus ❤
As a country we are in a bad place currently. But yes, it was certainly uplifting to see despite everything gp8jg on in his life that Derek still glorifies Christ
I love sharing bagels, waffles, fresh fruit. I usually make extra sandwiches and extra soup and drop it by a few families from my school who are residing in short term hotels.
There is a church that partners with my school and they drop off grocery bags of snacks and instant pop top ravioli, mac & cheese, breakfast bars, etc (about 10 items) in about 60 grocery bags on Thursdays for our counselors to pass to those students that are the most vulnerable. Right now we have about 12 families that are homeless, one of which got burned out the first day of spring break. So we didn't know until they got back in school.
The homeless students get double bags. And then the students that are in kinship caregiver status (raised by relatives but no CPS involved), then foster children.
The church that delivers them puts together a reusable freezer bag for the extended Christmas holiday. They filled the bag with holiday things and then there's usually a gift card for about 15 dollars to the grocery store for meat or something else for the meal.
We really don't realize how close some of us are to one crisis leading to poverty.
So much is taken for granted.
What a wonderfully ministry. But for the grace of God it could be any of us.
I think Derek is so happy to see that there are good people. Like you in this world Carol.
Great share! You're very kind to help him, to spread the love & kindness.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. It really was a blessing to me to help Derek.
Hugs.
🙏❤️🙏😘
I'd say that I'm poor, & I'd also say that I'm relatively happy. 💁♀️
❤❤❤❤❤
I think knowing that God loves me
🥰🙏
It's simple, Jesus. HE wilk carry a perspn through the dark times which could be days, weeks, even years. Jesus has carried me through my darkest times between 16-20, which could have ended really tragic for me. Reagesless we one had the riches or only a few cents there is comfort in Jesus. I know because im living proof. Grewt vido as usual. God bl3ss youz your channek and family. In Jesus mighty name amen and amen.
Amen. I am so glad to hear He carried you thru amd you acknowledge Jesus
He must be in need of dental care as he said he can only chew soft food, 💔🙏
Another thing that really bothers me is why don't churches open up ALL their buildings to the homeless and feed them instead of expecting other organizations or the government to do it. They could also open up ALL their big parking lots to at least older citizens that live in vans and cars for a safe place to sleep at night. Most church parking lots are empty at night. Sundays could be spent feeding the homeless instead of entertaining people with a great sermon and amazing music. If not on Sunday then do it on Monday or every day. People are sooo generous I'm sure they would be happy to bring the food and help serve it. Get an exact cost to keep the building open and everyone share the cost. I'm sorry but I think like Paul who was a tent maker Pastors can work like everyone else. If they want a sermon or music let those that support that church lead music and get up and share God's word. That is more how the first churches were. Sorry for the rant.😂
I agree that churches that profess to preach Christ should be taking the lead. There is one church in El Cajon that actually built tiny houses on their parking lot to house homeless single moms and their children. But other churches could do so much more, especially as you noted by opening up their parking lots. I did speak with one pastor. But he claimed insurance would probably be an issue. As far as I know he didn't inquire i with the church's insurance company to see if that was actually the case. Clearly this was not something he wanted to do.
We have an older tiny church that has a clothing donation drop & they make sure anyone in need receives it, & sells any leftovers for $1 a bag. There’s another that’s slightly larger that handles food donations & partners with a resale for pet food donations. Then there’s one that opens its doors whenever the weather’s severe, the pastor ask police not to bother anyone who is asleep on the steeps or parking lot. All 3 barely have any parking. But just half a mile down, there’s door to door mega churches for at least an 11 mile stretch, & with 1-3 acre landscaped parking lots that are barricaded 156 hours a week. The oldest actually has 12 RV hookups… reserved for family.
@@sunshine3914 great to hear some are doing some good. It does Amaze me how many churches there are in every town you go to. If they would just ALL coordinate with each other they could really make a difference in the world.
We don't know whom Father God Angel's .
I'm first‼️hi Carol hi Jessica‼️
Why is the government handing out millions of dollars in cash and debit cards, free cell phones, free food, free housing, etc to illegals while our own citizens go without?
How can we help this man? Is there anyway of contacting him again?
Same in the UK 😢
It isn't about help, it's about control in both cases. I recently discovered if a senior dies having accepted state aid before they die, the state will come after what little estate there is, even if it's $200.00 for charity.
I can't answer the first question. I am asking that myself. As far as the second question, I don't know when I will see Derek again. But I certainly will inquire more about his circumstances if I encounter him again.
@@margarethutchens5463 Yes the government will take whatever there is to be compensated for monies spent. I think if there is a surviving spouse they may be able to remain in the house. Not sure. I do not believe this is the case with illegal aliens. Doesn't seem fair somehow.
What a grateful guy Jesus help him
His faith even in his circumstances was inspiring.
My son and his family are homeless. I hope people are kind towards them. I'm on the verge myself.
