Could you still be happy if you were dirt poor & homeless?

  • I recently watched an encounter between two strangers that really touched my heart. It prompted me to contact one of the individuals He iwas a man who appeared to be homeless perhaps living or camping on the streets living in poverty with little to nothing as far as material goods. Yet he displayed a joy that was hard to understand given his apparent circumstances. Inwas determined tonfund out why. I was determined to find out how someone in his situation could exude such joy. After my brief encounter with him I concluded that this man knew the true meaning of gratitude, even for the smallest things in life. Even a gift as small as a container of fruit. I left from my interaction with him determined to try to be more grateful for what I have instead of focusing on what I don't have. I hope this videonwill be an encouragement to all who watch it. If it is to you let.me know in the comments. And.hit that LIKE button to help.me to continue bringing you thought filled content like this.

I had gone into Aldi to buy several pounds of grapes because they were on sale. When I came out there was a Spanish speaking lady and her beautiful daughter (9 or 10). She had a sign that they needed help, I pulled out a couple pounds of grapes, and gave them to the child and she was delighted. My feel good moment for the day.

The joy of the Lord is my strength! There was a time when I had money and I didn’t pray much anymore. One day the Lord spoke to my heart and said, you don’t talk to me anymore, I thought oh well. Then again the Lord spoke to me and said, you don’t talk to me anymore, and I still just pushed it off until about a year later (2008)when my husband lost most of his business. Guess who was talking to God then? All the money in the world will not bring happiness, but a relationship with Jesus Christ, and being filled with holy spirit will bring great peace and joy to your soul!

I think when you’re poor you’re unencumbered from stress. It can be liberating to be free from responsibility and bills. There’s a LOT of unhappy rich people. I’ve become very fond of the saying “I don’t have everything I want, but I have everything I need”. For a lot of people, having everything they need can actually be very little. Doesn’t that sound refreshing to be free from the trappings of our materialistic society?

The man who gave him the watermelon gave him what the bible describes as "and then they gave much". As little as it was to him the meal you feed him was equal you gave him in his heart I bet. The best way, I can explain why somebody with nothing can be joyful, and you said happy is that their joy comes from Jesus, who is deep down inside of him, and is a fountain of joy in a believer’s heart. Happiness can be a Chinese meal or a smoothie, or a good circumstance at the moment, but happiness can come and go. Joy, however, is deeper And Derek seemed to have a fountain of joy that never runs dry, Jesus!

I love sharing bagels, waffles, fresh fruit. I usually make extra sandwiches and extra soup and drop it by a few families from my school who are residing in short term hotels.
There is a church that partners with my school and they drop off grocery bags of snacks and instant pop top ravioli, mac & cheese, breakfast bars, etc (about 10 items) in about 60 grocery bags on Thursdays for our counselors to pass to those students that are the most vulnerable. Right now we have about 12 families that are homeless, one of which got burned out the first day of spring break. So we didn't know until they got back in school.
The homeless students get double bags. And then the students that are in kinship caregiver status (raised by relatives but no CPS involved), then foster children.
The church that delivers them puts together a reusable freezer bag for the extended Christmas holiday. They filled the bag with holiday things and then there's usually a gift card for about 15 dollars to the grocery store for meat or something else for the meal.
We really don't realize how close some of us are to one crisis leading to poverty.
So much is taken for granted.

Another thing that really bothers me is why don't churches open up ALL their buildings to the homeless and feed them instead of expecting other organizations or the government to do it. They could also open up ALL their big parking lots to at least older citizens that live in vans and cars for a safe place to sleep at night. Most church parking lots are empty at night. Sundays could be spent feeding the homeless instead of entertaining people with a great sermon and amazing music. If not on Sunday then do it on Monday or every day. People are sooo generous I'm sure they would be happy to bring the food and help serve it. Get an exact cost to keep the building open and everyone share the cost. I'm sorry but I think like Paul who was a tent maker Pastors can work like everyone else. If they want a sermon or music let those that support that church lead music and get up and share God's word. That is more how the first churches were. Sorry for the rant.😂

I agree that churches that profess to preach Christ should be taking the lead. There is one church in El Cajon that actually built tiny houses on their parking lot to house homeless single moms and their children. But other churches could do so much more, especially as you noted by opening up their parking lots. I did speak with one pastor. But he claimed insurance would probably be an issue. As far as I know he didn't inquire i with the church's insurance company to see if that was actually the case. Clearly this was not something he wanted to do.

We have an older tiny church that has a clothing donation drop & they make sure anyone in need receives it, & sells any leftovers for $1 a bag. There’s another that’s slightly larger that handles food donations & partners with a resale for pet food donations. Then there’s one that opens its doors whenever the weather’s severe, the pastor ask police not to bother anyone who is asleep on the steeps or parking lot. All 3 barely have any parking. But just half a mile down, there’s door to door mega churches for at least an 11 mile stretch, & with 1-3 acre landscaped parking lots that are barricaded 156 hours a week. The oldest actually has 12 RV hookups… reserved for family.

@@sunshine3914 great to hear some are doing some good. It does Amaze me how many churches there are in every town you go to. If they would just ALL coordinate with each other they could really make a difference in the world.

Why is the government handing out millions of dollars in cash and debit cards, free cell phones, free food, free housing, etc to illegals while our own citizens go without?
How can we help this man? Is there anyway of contacting him again?

It isn't about help, it's about control in both cases. I recently discovered if a senior dies having accepted state aid before they die, the state will come after what little estate there is, even if it's $200.00 for charity.

@@margarethutchens5463 Yes the government will take whatever there is to be compensated for monies spent. I think if there is a surviving spouse they may be able to remain in the house. Not sure. I do not believe this is the case with illegal aliens. Doesn't seem fair somehow.
