Money is just money. It is a means of human symbolic exchange. All relationships involve some form of exchange of energy. Money is trees made flat and metal made round.
We humans attribute so many things to money. The important thing is to know that you can have everything and have nothing or have nothing and have everything. I'm rich and no little or great amount of money changes that. The things I am rich in money can't buy and lack of money can't remove.

I really want to do this....not because I can't find a job, I am resourcefull, not because I can't afford my living, I can manage a low income with all the "luxury" benefits included (clothes, going out, a vacation once in a while). I want this life because this is living. I can barely accept the fact that the work I do revolves around money, buying and selling stuff to people that do the same. I feel this is certain death. You can't truly live those 8 hours a day you work for a company. You are dead. You don't see, smell, taste or interract with free will, you are "working" and live in your "spare time". 8 hours a day you are not living, therefore you could say you are dead

Sketch Meyer I want to live off the grid so bad. I will eventually. I hate being in the matrix. I've just applied for a job that I really don't want. But I have a debt to pay. I made some dumb choices at 18 19 20. I've learned from those mistakes but now I'm paying for it literally. I have this fuck it mentality, I don't wanna pay back shit. lol but how silly is that. I have to take responsibility. sigh. I've never liked working. I've always felt it was a waste of my life. No freedom I have to plan my life around my job. Ask for time off. Ask for someone to cover my shift. It's obsurd. Plus dealing with a large variety of people through the day gives me anxiety. The stress and negativity that comes with the job drags me down. It sucks the life from me. It pisses me off that I have to pay back money that someone created out of thin air. But then again it was my actions. I just wish I knew then what I know now. I would have never borrowed money. I would have never bought a car. So now I have to sell my soul for a good year or two to pay this money back. Going to do my best to stay positive and motivated. I hope the world does change though. I hope one day money will be a thing of the past.

why would it be difficult in this day and age? it was only 12 years ago! lol! I did the same thing twice, before I was 25 and now I'm thinking of doing it again. The hardest part is letting go.. I came back because I missed the easy life and now I miss the free life. It's your own choice, no one else to blame. In the city I get depressed but in nature I miss my heater and the comfort of running water and lightning with a single push on a button. "This day and age" lol. Stop blaming other things. I could do it when I was 14 and when I was 21. I chose to live in and from nature and I chose to come back, willing to be a slave to society for an easy and lazy life. Good to know the 14 year old me was less of a crybaby than most people. I didn't blame it on anyone. You can leave anytime you want. Pack your bags and go. "This day and age" hahahhaah

I so totally agree with and love Daniel's description of living in faith and how everything comes as we need it!
I love how he speaks of the natural economy of the earth, how beneficial, freely giving happens constantly in nature, and to live in gratitude. So inspiring! Thank you!
I have been immersed in the Coast Salish "Native American'" culture for over 25 years. The traditional economy of this culture is based on the peschelt, also known as 'potlatching.' This is an economy centered around 'giving.'
This traditional economy was intentionally outlawed and literally made illegal in the US (Along with First Peoples being forbidden and physically punished at boarding schools when children attempted to speak their traditional languages.
First People's were legally banned from practicing this traditional way of sharing and giving. In Coast Salish peschelt culture (Also called potlatch culture) people accumulate things by harvest, handcrafting, trading. and buying necessities such as food, blankets and housewares in addition to other gifts in order to store these up in preparation for giving to others through potlatch celebrations.
Hereditary chiefs, community leaders, have the biggest responsibility to give to the community. Material things are seen to be merely representative of spiritual wealth and love. What is most important is how one gives to others. Giving and receiving is an art form.
In this traditional peschelt economy, status and wealth comes not by what a person accumulates, rather but by how you contribute to community.
In traditional Salish language, there is no word in the culture for "I" there is only the word "we." Different tones are used to communicate who is being referred to.
The core understanding is that 'we' are together as an interdependent community. where giving and receiving is part of the natural flow of living.

im 16 and that thought just hit me that you shouldnt waste your life doing work for someone else to earn money money and more money, i wanna live freely and peacfuly but im scared that this thought will fly away and i become another one in this horrible system. i really dont want to care what i will wear what hearstyle should i have but somehow something forces me to be like everybody in this sociality and to make someone like my clothes or flex on somebody.. but its really doesnt matter how can't everybody see this. its sad that every parent teaches their kids from young age and puts in their heads that 'you should be part of this system'. its sad and im so lucky to get that in so young age. thank you

This is great what this guy has done. But people need to learn and get their terms and definitions correct.
We don't have or use Money - We have and are forced to use Currency. Money will retain its value through time, Currency does not. The Federal Reserve (not Federal or a reserve) Notes you use every day have no true value, its all perceived. And They have lost 98% of their value since 1913 via Inflation (hidden Tax). Gold and Silver have retained their value - 20 oz today will still buy what it did back in the 1910's and before - That is money.
Unless you were born before 1913 You have never had or used Money - Only Debt Slave notes made up out of thin air by criminal bankers.

I think it's clear that Daniel's choice reflects well thought out values. His main message seems to be that money shouldn't be our motivation, but rather we should have a more direct relation with our world and each other that reflects what we really are. The belief that money is value actually diminishes our satisfaction in life, as opposed to the conventional belief that says more money = more hapiness.
Of course the lifestyle that he chose does not and cannot change the whole system in which we live. So yes, money was still involved somewhere along the line when it comes to the things he needs to survive (except those gotten directly from nature). But this fact does not invalidate the values he has and is expressing through his lifestyle. Also, if our system is going to change, then it will take people like Daniel who are first willing to go against the grain (not necessarily do the exact same thing he's doing).
So it seems the people here who are saying he's just hypocritical or unrealistic simply aren't understanding the message or perhaps feel their own values are being threatened.

You have to shift value and reassign it in order to access control. Our values dictate our actions. Having our values redirected since birth allows an installment of a false belief in hierarchy. Instead of seeing the truth, that all things on Earth are part of a balance and therefore have equal importance and equal value to all other things, we place value on a false concept of hierarchy and shift our self value downward and place others above us. This is done intentionally. The root of all evil isn't money. It's the concept of hierarchy. Money is just a tool that supports dependencies on this hierarchy so that one group can control resources and control access to those resources over another group.

Love it when he says: "When you realize that you didn't earn anything, that everything is a gift then you have a sense of gratitude" That sums up my religion right there. Are you thankful for what God has done for you or are you arrogant?! When you realize that you didn't earn salvation, that salvation is a gift then you have a sense of gratitude. Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." You can only boast if you rely on your own efforts and there is no real sense of gratitude in that but only arrogance.

    Dear Editor:
Have you read the book, The Man Who Quit Money? I have. It was written by a man from Missoula, Montana, Mark Sundeen. In TMWQM, Mark Sundeen writes about Daniel Suelo who, supposedly, lives in a cave outside of Moab, Utah, without any income at all, using no money, of his own freewill, and survives! This is far from the truth. Daniel often goes to the public library in Moab to use the Internet. Daniel often hitches rides here and there using the public road and a Good Samaritan’s fuel. However, Daniel does not consider these activities as using money, even though he is consuming a public goods (library computer and Internet) and private goods (the Good Samaritan’s car and fuel.) Daniel Suelo has some mumbo-jumbo philosophy that allows him to consume all public goods and any private goods from “friends” as long as he accepts with gratitude. Let me make this clear: In Daniel Suelo’s mind, all the people in the world can live freely, as long as we give to one another and accept with gratitude. What a bunch of malarkey! If a person uses a public good (a road, the library, attending a museum, whatever), then that person is using money. This isn’t up for debate. Yes, the money is tax-payers’ money so the money is being consumed indirectly, in the form of taxes, but money is being consumed nonetheless. And, anyone who accepts “gifts” from others (private goods from “friends”) is still CONSUMING, even if he or she accepts with gratitude. Daniel Suelo cannot see these truths. Daniel Suelo still insists he uses no money. Thus, Daniel Suelo is delusional. Also, Daniel Suelo often “house sits” for friendly supporters, using their home, sleeping in their beds and eating their food while his supporters are elsewhere. But, according to Daniel, he is not using any money. Remember, this consumption is allowed, as long as he accepts with gratitude. Suelo’s delusional mind should be clear to rational people. What is terrible and very troubling is that Daniel Suelo, along with the help of writer Mark Sundeen, is spreading this delusional malarkey to other people. In effect, Daniel Suelo and Mark Sundeen are lying to these people, enticing these innocent and gullible individuals to give up the striving of life, to leave the money system, to live like the great one, Daniel Suelo, the prophet, free of money. This is disgusting. Daniel Suelo is an egomaniac perpetrating his myth into weak and impressionable people, not only in the USA but around the world. Why? Why do you think? To get a following. Once on his Facebook page, Daniel Suelo said that he remembers when he was five years old, standing in his crib, holding onto the bars. There, in that moment, he had a vision, a vision that said he was going to be a LEADER OF A MOVEMENT. Ha! I am not making this stuff up. It is there. Go to his FB page and research it. You might have to go back some time, circa spring 2013. Anyway, really, who sees such visions at five years old? Budding egomaniacs; that’s who, maybe a David Koresh. In writing his sympathetic biography of Daniel Suelo, TMWQM, Mark Sundeen has not only endorsed Daniel Suelo’s lies but romanticized his lifestyle and encouraged others to attempt to live thus, to attempt to live free of money. The writer Mark Sundeen knew and associated with Daniel Suelo BEFORE the writing of his book, TMWQM. This leads one to believe that Mark Sundeen knew good and well that Suelo’s ideas would be appealing to many, and this appeal would make Mark Sundeen much money. How ironic?!!! Mark Sundeed writes a book about a prophet who lives his life without money in order to make money for himself!! Now, I am not some Ayn Rand, selfish tea-bagger. I have been a lifelong liberal and understand the incredibly difficult path to becoming financially secure in this life. Even in today’s modern world, equality and opportunity are still myths. One’s birth is the greatest indicator of financial success, a greater indicator than ambition or even IQ. Nearly half of the world’s population lives on less than two dollars a day. About 40 percent of the USA population lives from one paycheck to the other. Considering these dismal truths, I would love for a human being to be able to live without money, to live in a beautiful utopian world, to live as John Lennon once sang in his song IMAGINE: nothing to kill of die for, with no heaven above us, no hell below, no possessions, in a brotherhood of man. Ha! Yea, John Lennon was a dreamer, beautiful, but a dreamer nonetheless. That life is just not going to happen. Even in the old Soviet Union the idea was not to live completely without money. Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky were not that stupid, so stupid to try to pull such a ridiculous idea over the heads of the people. Can you imagine Vladimir Lenin saying: “We can live free! Using no money!” The people would not have been deceived. So, Lenin and Trotsky told a partial live. “We can live equal!” This partial lie didn’t turn out too well, even though North Korea and Cuba (not China) are still continuing with such pretense. The world is rough, and this rough world is established on money. Money is the proof that we are physical beings. Money is proof that our existence is not only spiritual, as the prophet Daniel Suelo would like to convince people, people whom he hopes will become his new disciples. Once again, let me be very clear: An utopian society of life-without-money is complete BULLSH@#. There will never be a way to live COMPLETELY without money. If you use public goods, then you are using money indirectly. If you “house sit,” you are using someone else’s money. Sure, there are minimalist, people who choose to live with the bare essentials, (remember Henry David Thoreau), and there are people who just glean off of society, people whom John Lenin’s buddy, Paul McCartney, might have been referring to when Paul sang: got a good reason, for taking the easy way out… These people don’t bother me, either one, the minimalist or the person who has sort of just checked out. I understand they are fed up with the money system. However, do not lie to me and say you live with NO MONEY! In his book TMWQM, author Mark Sundeen did not ask any real difficult questions to Daniel Suelo. Sundeen was definitely not working as an objective journalist or and objective biographer. Remember, Daniel Suelo and Mark Sundeen have known each other for many years. They were friends before this book was written! Such a friendship automatically produces a biased book, a biased book in favor of Daniel Suelo’s mythical life. Sundeen’s angle was clear. He wanted to romanticize Daniel Suelo as much as he could in order to sell books. Someone in the Missoula community needs to contact Mr. Sundeen and ask him a simple question: “Do you really believe that Daniel Suelo is living without any money?” If Mark Sundeen says, yes, then Mark Sundeen is a liar. If Mark Sundeen says, no, then Mark Sundeen is knowingly glorifying a charlatan, a charlatan who is seducing young people from around the county into a fake life, a life that cannot be lived, a life where one day the convert will wake up and ask: “Why have I been wasting my life?” Of course, the prophet Daniel Suelo would say, “You are not wasting your life, you are living your life freely.” Yea, you are living your life “freely” if you can find some “friends” who will let you “house sit” during the winter months like the great guru, Daniel Suelo, does. People, do not be deceived! Do not join Daniel Seulo’s, Moneyless Tribe, his group of disciples who, day by day, are becoming just as delusional as their leader, accepting his indoctrination. The Moneyless Tribe is Daniel Suelo’s cult. Daniel Suelo’s Moneyless Tribe is not like Occupy Wall Street which was trying to bring attention to outrageous CEO pay and the corruption in the banking system. No, Daniel Suelo’s Moneyless Tribe just wants to live outside of the system, the system of money. There is a problem, NO ONE can exists COMPLETELY outside the system of money. Daniel Suelo is really a Freegan, a person who does not want to live in our consumerism society, a person who wants to glean off of the leftovers, the kind of person Beatle Paul McCartney sung about. This is fine with me. Just tell the truth. Stop with your malarkey. Stop with your lies.

There is a bigger picture. Pretend money never existed as it once didn't. Everyone would be working to produce what the world needs and swapping good/services back and forth within a highly evolved logistics process. End of story.

Delbert, what you say may all be true, but he does have a message that has some validity. You think you could live as he does? I agree the main message that there is a problem with the money system the way it's organized now -- that is, capitalism. We would have a much better society if the greater reward for our efforts went to the good of all rather than our personal coffer. In other words, socialism, though this is over simplifying the issue, and creating a fair system in a socialist society is the challenge.

Tom Calarco You are a pure liberal, believing in socialism. I am not a pure liberal but lean strongly to your side. I am glad that you can see the many holes in anyone's claim that he or she lives completely without the use of money, directly or indirectly. The writer Mark Sundeen has deceived his readers with this promotional biography, TMWQM. I hope Sundeen makes lots of money with his book about a man who lives without money, irony of ironies. I do not buy Sundeen's romanticism of Daniel Suelo. If you want, Tom, find my book, "The Intellectual Bachelor, Part One" on Amazon. In it, I give the reader a more thorough description of how I see the world and human beings. Capitalism, in its purest form, is slavery and evil. This is how capitalism began in the USA, as a slave based economy. In the end, capitalism will destroy the world with its pollution and inequality. By 2050, the world population is to be 10 billion. There is no way the world system will support this many people. Hell, the world system doesn't support the people on earth now. They system will break. I say this inevitable breaking as a young man.

      Delbert/Dimitry:
I read your posting and wondered: do you know this man? Do you have a personal issue/grudge with him? Were you or a loved one harmed in the past by a cult? Cults are something to be aware of and watch out for for sure.
I have worked in mental health and counseling field for years for years doing assessments and intakes to determine people's status. From what I can see, there is zero risk of this man bringing on the kool-aide to others, harming anyone, nor of him amassing any obsequious followers.
Heck, if you read his personal webpage, it is obvious he has hermit tendencies. He put a 'moratorium' on more people coming to learn from him and he only had four people there staying with him! Few people have come and gone to his location, and those that came, left.
Your intense level of worry about this man as a cult leader is simply baseless.
From reading his writings and watching his video he has similar characteristics and beliefs as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Peace Pilgrim. He is a person who is doing his best to live according to how Jesus lived and he is sincere and earnest about this. His lifestyle is bound to be odious, repulsive and disgusting to some, idiosyncratic and Don Quixoteish to others, frightening to some, idealistic, spiritual and visionary to some, hopeful and inspirational to others.
Unless there is a bonafide collapse of civilization, there just aren't going to be huge hordes of people foaming at the mouth and getting in line to follow his example to feed themselves by dumpster diving, eating roadkill possum, snails and insects and dodging rangers in parks while living in caves without running water, microwaves, or TV! The reality is this: 99.9% of people who live with cars, have indoor heating, toilets, showers, clothes, computers, TV's, microwaves and who.shop in malls and grocery stores simply aren't going to be inspired to 'downsize' like this and choose this lifestyle.
On the other hand, there IS a long, robust spiritual tradition across many different religions of persons who throughout history who have chosen and still choose to live personally without money, whether these are monks from Buddhist tradition who beg for their food or Catholic orders where people who enter monasteries and convents devote their lives to God and give up claim to their money as part of spiritual renunciation by taking a vow of poverty.
Realistically, this type of living will be considered undesirable to a majority of persons. Each or us has to decide for ourselves how we want to live on this earth while we are here.
From what I observe,( never having met him,) this man is very disciplined and conscientious about living according to his values to the best of his ability. Also, he does work that is useful to/benefits others, he feeds himself from foraging, from what society considers 'waste.' and what is offered. He is doing his best to live according to spiritual principles. Because he isn't a part of monastery/religious group he faces a more grueling, challenging life as he doesn't have a stable community of like-minded persons for strength and support.

I think this is a lovely idea & the truth is that now is a great time to do it because you can have the peaceful life with the benefit of modern conveniences.
