  • Here in Northeast Ohio, the Steelhead season is in full effect and in this video, our volunteer Fabio Malaspina shows you how to tie the "Crystal Meth" fly which should be a staple in your fly boxes. This is a flashy version of a sucker spawn fly.
This is an egg pattern that you can use to target steelhead (sizes 12 - 16) and trout. You can fish this fly under an indicator together with a nymph or a woolly bugger. With clear and low water use size 16 and pale colors braid. Always check your local fishing regulations as to how many flies you can use.
    Materials list:
Thread: 70 denier pink, red or other color
Hook: Curved-shank caddis hook, sizes 8 down to 16. In the video I used a size 10 Tiemco 2457 hook.
Bead: Gold or copper to match hook size
Body: Sparkle braid Fl. Fire Orange. Other colors: pink, cream, red, blue, chartreuse, white. Scale down the amount of material as you use smaller hooks.
    Optional: Tail: Pearl crystal flash
Fly tying skill set rating = Easy
