Had it for a year now, and it's my absolute favorite jacket. Been using almost everyday. Even as a winter jacket, only my lack of proper mid layer stopped me from wearing it as it got too cold.
Can't wait to get my hands on this jacket.
Great review, I own his jacket and have used it for nearly a year. Its tremendous, agree with all you said. Not a replacement for a hardshell but I find myself wearing 90 percent of the time. I hope your binoculars still work afer dropping them!! Atb.
J Bradshaw what colour did you get?
hi Paul, great review, however I disagree with you on the water resistance of the jacket. in my experience the jacket has little or no water resistance and needs to be supplemented with a poncho. waxing the jacket with Greenland wax met with very limited success. using a Barbour wax increased the resistance but unfortunately cut down on the jackets ability to breath.
Hi Louis, the waxing of these jackets is a bit of an art-form and works best if you apply thin layer by thin layer. I have this particular jacket myself and have found it to be as water resistant as a softshell jacket provided you apply several thin layers. Regards, Harry.
I've experienced that as well, that it doesn't repel the way it does here, but as stated, you need to hone your waxing skills. My first go at it made it stiff as a wooden floor. I applied too much wax, and it took some discolouring. However with wear and tear, it looks right again.
Yes, even with wax water resistance is not a strongest part of this jacket. I had to use it with poncho during my rainy hikes. Next time i will try use multiple thin layers of wax instead of one and thick.
In my opinion, the Skogso is not very good value for money in terms of what it offers. I decided on the Kaipak (similar price) which is much better value and has more features as well as offering better protection. I just felt the Skogso was too basic. Also, it has relatively long sleeves and press stud adjustment which didn't suit me at all. The Skogso padded jacket, on the other hand, is much better value and really is worth the money. By the way, never pay full price for Fjallraven - you can always find big discounts.
I purchased my first Skogsö back in 2013 and wore it every day till the summer of 2019. Even in the dead of winter in Northern Canada with a hooded sweater as a second layer. I recently had to purchase a new Skogsö because after six years of wearing a backpack when I’m hiking or biking and the constant rubbing has worn a sizeable hole on the lower back of the jacket. However, I love the fit and versatility of it. Here’s to another six years!
They are certainly built to last! Thanks for watching.
Hole after 6 years? I dont like that.....
Why not just get it repaired? 🤔
Fjällräven warranty sent two G1000 swatches. After sewing, my back is triple layered!!
I'm having trouble seeing the difference between this and the Sten jacket. Fjallraven needs to a better job describing what makes their jackets different. As they are often far too similar, at least from just pictures.
Mainly fit. The Sten is more everyday focused whereas the Skogso is an everyday/trekking jacket. From what I remember, the Skogso is also longer, but I'm afraid we haven't stocked the Sten in a while. Harry
I lost my woggle some time ago and have been cursed with bad luck ever since.
I have managed to retain my woggle, even though it's been many decades since it was last used in anger.
Thanks for a great review! I'm between Skogso and Kaipak jackets, but not a big fan of the stretch panels since I'm afraid it'll reduce windproofness, since I intend to use it for casual wearing and lighter hikes in the forest. I haven't found comparisons in the web, but noticed you've helped people with different questions. What's the difference between G1000/G1000 Lite used on Skogso and G1000 Eco used on Kaipak?
G-1000 Eco feels and performs exactly the same as regular G-1000, it just uses recycled polyester and organic cotton. G-1000 Lite isn't massively lighter than regular G-1000 in actual use, so both the Kaipak and Skogso will both be great jackets for what you'll be using it for. They both fit very differently though, with the Skogso being longer and slimmer and the Kaipak a little roomier all round. Kind regards, Harry.
I realy liked the jacket but only after 1,5 years the sleeve wear off on the inner side of the upper arm. On one spot even a little hole appear. I dont like the G1000 lite. I think its not very sturdy. I wish the whole jacket would be out of regular G1000.
Hi Gieszkanne, that's a real shame about your jacket, it sounds like it was a particularly localised wear issue. But the big advantage of G1000 is that it can be easily repaired, unlike other modern technical fabrics. Paul.
@@trekitt I am in contact with Fjällräven its an open case yet. Because its a wear issue maybe I get warranty.
I bought one of these jackets from Trekit after watching this video.
It's a really nice jacket, the sort of thing that you want to wear everyday, but it is in no way 'waterproof' or "highly water resistant".
The 1st time I wore it, it was fairly water resistant, but the second time, it leaked badly. I waxed it twice, and it was far less waterproof than an average softshell jacket.
In the end, I used nikwax to clean and waterproof it, I've tested it in the shower, time will tell how well it's worked.
If you're happy to spend half an hour waxing it every other time it gets wet, and are more successful than I was with it, then maybe you'll get on ok with it👎👍
Hi Casper. The Skogso isn't designed to be "waterproof" and the level of water resistance will solely depend on how much Greenland Wax that you apply. It's bets to apply the wax in thin, multiple layers and build them up gradually until you get the resistance you require. Looked after well, and maintained correctly, the Skogso jacket will last for decades; far longer than your average softshell. Thanks for watching. Paul.
@@trekitt
Thanks Paul, it is a really nice jacket, I just feel that it gets sold as being capable of more than it is designed for.
Thanks for the reply, I may be making another trip from Gloucester for a pair of Meindl's👍
Hi Paul, great video. I was wondering what color the jacket is?
Thanks. The colour is olive, if you follow the link in the description you will be able to see the other 2 colours that we have in stock.
Hi, this colour is Dark Olive. Regards, Harry.
Hi Sir. I'm about to buy this jacket from your online store. Just wanted to ask what size should i choose? I'm 185cm in height, 83kg in weight, fit and flat belly. Thank you.
Rio Ve xl if you you want som layers under! Am 185 and 88kg with a little beer belly! A perfect 3 season jacket👍
i saw it today. i wore it. very nice and comfi. but giving 240 euros for a product made in vietnam? i mean i have a german army flecktarn , 65% cotton,35% polyester, made in germany for only 30 euros. plus i can use it near fire. i donno, i think is better value for money and more comfortable.
I’m glad Dominic Cummins is back on employment.
Great rewiew! :)
As a daily user of the Skogsö jacket, have you noticed any major differences between the G-1000 and the G-1000 lite fabric? I really like the design of the Skogsö jacket, but worry about the weather resistance of the lite version of the fabric!
Hi Joel, the weather resistance is barely noticeable as Fjallraven products require wax to repel wind and water, the only major difference is the durability. G-1000 is tougher and will put up more of a fight towards brambles and general abrasion, however from 4 years of owning this jacket, neither fabric shows any sign of wear.
maybe i missed it but - how tall are you and what size are you wearing?
Paul is 6ft 3" and wears a size large.
@@trekitt thank you :)
Completely useless in even a light shower, not at all water resistant
Watching from the US! Great video thank you!
Hi, I have the Skogso, brilliant jacket, how does the Sten jacket compare in terms of size and as an all round jacket in comparison to the Skogso? Thanks
The Sten is quite a bit shorter in the body, but features the same slim fit. It isn't aimed at trekking and mountainous use so much as well, more along the lines of travel, everyday use and a little casual walking here and there. The fabric is the same and features a similar pocket layout, so it'll be very similar to your Skogso apart from the fit and intended end use. Regards, Harry.
Trekitt Mountain Sports Thanks, that's very helpful. Are the length of the sleeves similar to the Skogso as I have long arms and the Skogso is a really good fit?
I'm afraid I can't check on that one; we did used to stock the Sten but it was a few years ago and I can't remember if the sleeves are the same length.
Trekitt Mountain Sports Ok, thanks for your help.
I currently have a Sten and had a Skogso that gave to my girlfriend...the Sten is shorter in both overall length and sleeves but both are slim fitting compared to another Fjallraven jacket I have called the Oban, which is like a hoodless Greenland jacket. You have to go a size up on either a Sten or Skogso to get the same fit as a Greenland.
Hi there. What size is the jacket and what is your height-weight?
Hi, Paul is 6ft 3, has a 42" chest, a 34" waist and is wearing a size large. Unfortunately I don't know his weight! Regards, Harry.
thanx
Is this a slim/trim fit or "normal" (roomier) fit? I'm 1.85m, about 210pounds with a 44 inch chest and not much of a protruding gut. I guess "athletic" in build. Thanks.
It's fairly long and slim. Slimmer than most of Fjallraven's outerwear.
what size are you wearing? is it true to size?
Large. Paul wears a large in every brand we stock, so I'd say it's pretty accurate size wise.
@@trekitt ok, thank you. and what is approxiamate height? i guees within 6 feet, right?
@@Vakhtang_Magradze 6ft 3, 42" chest, 34" waist. Weighs around 85kg.
@@trekitt thank you kindly!
Hi Paul
Can you use this for European late winters ... I mean 1 - 5 degrees centigrade?
Or do you have to sheel out the extra for the padded jacket?
It's not insulated, so really depends what you're using it for in your layering system. I've used it as an outer over insulated layers to act as a windproof barrier and it works well.
Hi Paul,
Do you find the skogso jacket is sized similar to the Vidda pro jacket?
The Skogso is slimmer than the Vidda. The Vidda has a much squarer shape. Harry
Great review…
What is the diference between sten jacket vs ksosgo jacket…
I want to know your opinion ..
thanks
Sten is aimed more at everyday use whereas the Skogso has a more trekking-orientated design. The Skogso is also a bit longer in the body.
Thank you for making really great reviews. Looks very nice in the nature. The background looks like Norwegian or swedish landscape.
You're welcome, it is a nice location. Unfortunately not in Norway or Sweden, although I wish it was! Harry
Hello 👋🏼 hope you’re still replying to comments. I read somewhere that these jackets are a bit larger than normal sizing. I’m an extra large normally and worry that if I buy xl it’ll be to big. Can you comment on this please?
Hmm, I wouldn't say they are. I'm normally a large and would opt for a large; Paul (in the video) also did the same. The sleeves & body are relatively long, but not enough to size down.
@@trekitt Thank you for your reply, it was helpful.
I love impregnating my jackets.
It's an underrated experience indeed! Thanks for watching. Paul.
Nice review! what colour is taht? it looks great
Dark Olive.
Never went for a dog walk without water filter.
That's great to know, thanks for watching.
Great review, thanks.
I have 41" chest would you recommend a large or a medium. I usually wear a size medium or large in craghoppers depending if I want a warm layer underneath. Thanks
I'd recommend having a look at Fjallraven's sizing chart where you'll be able to compare a few other measurements too and hopefully get a more accurate prediction: www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/customer-service/size-chart
@@trekitt Thanks for this 👍
I have thew Greenland and the skogsö Jacket here. Both in size L and the skogsö is shorter and a bit tighter around the chest. That threw me off a bit. Because i thought it was longer. Will order skogsö in xl . I already have a Greenland Winter Jacket that serves me well .
The Skogso is definitely slimmer, although I'm surprised it's also shorter. Perhaps the waist is rising as it's too snug in the chest/shoulders. Harry
@@trekitt it is a weird cut. L is to tight and xl feels to bulky around the mid section. I think ill go with the Greenland
What size is this you look about like my size
Size large.
Apart from lacking the ventilation under the arms, what is the difference between Skogso and Kep? Anything that...let's say matters?
Keb doesn't have hand pockets, just large zips which open up to your other layers underneath. It also has a far bigger, more voluminous hood and a series of softshell panels around the chest, back and arms. The Skogso is far simpler.
@@trekitt Thanks! Would you then recommend that one or the other be worn in some certain conditions? Like: Keb - summer, light wind, and Skogso - autumn, stronger wind?
@@sebastiansimankowicz3209 Personally, I would opt for the Keb as a more mountain-focused piece and the Skogso for walking/trekking.
Nice review im still torn between this jacket and the greenland. I feel like the greenland is a bulkier cut but it feels a bit more sturdy. And i have noticed you don´t carry the jacket in your shop anymore. Thanks for the nice video
The Greenland, from what I remember, is much 'boxier' fit. Both are more than sturdy enough for daily use and feel a lot tougher than most insulated jackets. Harry
@@trekitt thank you Harry.
Hi Paul, watching this video I am wondering how do you wax your jacket exactly. The repellent effect looks like a new unused jacket. I would be glad to give my G1000 garments a wax impregnation which looks and funtioned like yours seems to do. Thank you, Fred.
There are two main ways to do it; iron it on or use a hairdryer. Both ways are fairly simple, just rub the wax over the jacket in straight lines and then melt it in using one of the two methods. Ironing tends to work a little better, however using a hairdryer is super quick and easy. We'd recommend applying lots of thin layers, one over the other, until you've reached the amount of weather resistance you require. Personally I just apply the wax to the shoulders and hood, leaving the rest of the jacket unwaxed and more breathable. There's also a video by Fjallraven demonstrating their method which I'll pop below. Kind regards, Harry.
ruclips.net/video/7nZuLkNORVQ/видео.html
@@trekitt Yes, lots of thin layers, that's the key I think. I will try that. Thank you very much for your quick response! Keep on your good, short AND very informative videos!
How can I properly clean it?
150ml of Nikwax Tech Wash/Grangers Performance Wash, 30°C in the washing machine. Nice and easy!
Are you same size in padded skogso
Hi Mark,
Thanks for getting in touch. That is a hard one as we longer stock the Skogso Padded in men's, and somehow I don't think the women's version would be a fair or flattering comparison for Paul to try on.
From what I can remember they are roughly the same fit but because the outer of the jacket doesn't change and the padded model contains the insulated lining so there is less room for layers underneath.
All the best,
Will
Hi Mark, just a quick update on your question. I also own a Skogso Padded and it's the same size as my un-padded Skogso. Paul.
Paul, great product, but do i go the Skogso or the Jacket 68? I'm looking for something to throw on to hike in the UK through all weathers, but also use when i'm in Norway and US Rockies. I plan to layer of course so how does the Skogso sizing work out?
They're very different jackets. The No.68 is a big, thick, heavy oversized jacket which provides protection in the worst weather, whereas the Skogso is far thinner, has a much slimmer fit and is more intended for year round trekking and travel use. For all year round use, go for the Skogso, for winter and foul weather, go for the No.86. Also bear in mind that neither of these is waterproof as such. Kind regards, Harry.
Harry, many thanks for the prompt reply. I was concerned about the weight of the 68 for all round use so your advice is spot on. If i wanted to go for an option with max rain protection would you choose a different jacket option?
These jackets are excellent all-rounders, they're water resistant, wind resistant, breathable, lovely to wear, but they're not fully waterproof or windproof, so for any situation where you need maximum protection from the elements I would recommend using a jacket which features Fjallraven's hydratic membrane rather than their standard G-1000.
OK, thanks again - great response and help.
This and the Keb jacket seem very similar.. But the Keb has the pit zips. Which do you prefer?
The main difference is that the Skogso is G-1000/G-1000 Lite all over, whereas the Keb features a mix of G-1000 and stretchy softshell panels. We'd recommend the Keb for active use (trekking, backpacking etc), and the Skogso for less arduous walks, bushcraft and everyday use.
Is this one warm enough for -15C
The Skogso features no insulation, it's purely a weather resistant outer layer. How warm you are will be a result of your insulative layers underneath. Kind regards, Harry.
Lol, this jacket ist for plus 15 degrees.
Hej Paul, thanks for sharing your experience! Did you try this jacket with subzero temperature? Or Do you think it would be better option to go for down parka ? Thanks!
Hi Vincent, the Skogso doesn't feature any insulation at all, therefore you'd need to wear some thick layers underneath to provide enough warmth for sub-zero temperatures. If you follow the link below you'll find our selection of Fjallraven insulation. Regards, Harry.
www.trekitt.co.uk/facetresults.aspx?Term=fjallraven
Thanks so much for the quick answer ! This is very good to know, I clicked on your link and recognized the Yupik Paka. This seems to be a great jacket but do you think it would still be a good choice when it comes to hiking ?
I completely forgot to mention that Fjallraven do make an insulated version of the Skogso! Below will take you to it. This would be far better for hiking due to the higher cut and better articulation.
www.trekitt.co.uk/33747/products/fjallraven-mens-skogso-padded-jacket-tarmac--dark-olive.aspx
Hoooo, I understand better now because I quickly saw it in shop and looked quite warm so I was very surprised about your answer ^^ Thank you so much for your time, I wish you the best for your futures adventures ;)
Does it have any problem with sparks or catching fire?
No, it's generally pretty good with sparks, especially when waxed.
Can you consider this a Windproof jacket?
It is virtually windproof from factory but can also be waxed to add a little more weather resistance.
Could I wear a thin rab kinetic under this to make it a waterproof bushcraft tough bit of kit?
Technically you could, but you'd be better off just waxing the hood/shoulders of the Skogso to increase its weather-resistance and durability. This won't be it absolutely waterproof, but if you're in woodland it'll provide the perfect amount of water-resistance and breathability. Kind regards, Harry.
