Absolutely useless in the rain even when waxed. Fjallraven is designed for Scandinavian weather so is perfect for snow. Love the style but would not trust this in UK wet weather. I’ve been caught out and drenched.
Tested in -15C Canadian Winter
Fit:- Many of the reviews I have read about Fjallraven jackets say to size down. I am glad that I sized down from Small to Extra Small (for reference I’m 5’6”, weight 140 lbs). I was initially afraid sizing down to XS size would not let me layer sweaters, however the XS let’s me layer up to three layers under the jacket no problem. If you have an average weight to height ratio I strongly recommend you size down for Fjallraven jackets. If you have above average weight, bust, or belly I would recommend you choose your normal size in Fjallraven jackets. Fjallraven jackets appear to be made for a Scandinavian lanky build with longer torso and generally speaking your normal size is just going to look way too big if you do not fit this local body build.
Style:- I would say this is a “rustic style” or “Nordic timelessly simple but defined quality style”, my wife said it’s a “nice dad style” on me. My impression is Fjallraven is not a “modern style” or “city commuter refined style” like Canada Goose incase that is what you are looking for.
Warmth:- Tested on a 15 min walk in mid-January Canadian winter sunny day at -15C (5F) with no wind outside (note - I also wore thermal top + bottom long base layer underwear + thick material long sleave mid layer top + denim pants + thick gloves, thick socks and fur lined insulated winter hat). - It kept me warm and comfortable during my 15 min walk. I have no doubt the Skogso jacket will be warm and comfortable with just a shirt up to -5C (23F) anything below that or during cold windy days you will have to layer up appropriately.
Jacket sleeve:- As mentioned by other reviewers yes the sleeve is long. However I sized down and the sleeve isn’t much of an issue. The slightly longer sleeve does help when you stretch your arm and the material isn’t riding up. There is a Velcro to tighten it at your wrist.
Zipper:- As mentioned by other reviewers the zipper is on the other side (European?) and it also requires me to keep it perfectly straight with the bottom zipper tab when zipping up. It is a bit weird but I don’t think it’s a big issue and something I will get used to. The jacket comes with a twin bottom zipper which I find useful to undo when I am seated in the car. There are plenty of pockets on this jacket…the outer pockets all have zippers.
Hood:- lightly insulated hood is a great feature that kept me warm in the very coldest temperature.
Bottomline: if you are looking for a winter jacket with warmth as your primary objective there are plenty of other brands like North Face that offer better warmth for a much better price than Fjallraven. If you are looking for a “modern style” or “city commuter refined style” AND you are willing to pay double the price material quality and name I would recommend Canada Goose. If you are looking for a “rustic style” or “Nordic timelessly simple but defined quality style” AND you are willing to pay more for the quality I would recommend Fjallraven.
I was looking for a different style than Canada Goose and I was willing to pay more for the style and quality of material - I went with the Fjallraven Skogso Padded Jacket and I would recommend this jacket for sub-zero Canadian winter weather with layering when appropriate.

And I disagree about Canada Goose.. I find that label to be pedestrian like Roots used to be before they became trash.. Fjällräven is more refined and your girlfriend doesn't know what's she's talking about

I bought the skogsö padded jacket for the coming winter in denmark. I own many products from Fjällräven, but lacked a proper winter jacket. Thanks for a good explanation of the jacket. By the way, Fjällräven means mountain fox, and Skogsö means forest lake.

Great review! I stand between the Skogsö and the Greenland winter jacket (or the Greenland winter parka). What would you take for really cold conditions? (Below 0 degrees Celsius). I currently tend towards the skogsö jacket. The skogsö has 145g/m2 off the Supreme microloft insulation - the Greenland winter jacket 115g/m2 supreme Microloft plus the fleece insulation - I don’t know which one is better - also the skogsö is only g1000 light and Greenland the more durable (and warmer?) g1000 eco... hard decision
I recently bought the same jacket and it's great! Kept we warm while walking in the woods on a cold morning and super comfy.
I have one as well and the arms are long. Also the jacket isn't really a proper winter jacket. For me, its best for 0deg to maybe -6. At -6 and on I have to start wearing a sweater or sweater and a puff jacket underneath. It was -20 deg celcius here in Toronto yesterday, and I had to wear a sweater and a lite down puff jacket (from uniqlo) underneath to keep me warm. Though I have been hating the cold lately.
Question. I used the Greenland wax and ironed it. But I find that the water does not bead off. I applied a lot of wax and ironed it off. Any suggestions? I know it's water resistant not waterproof, but I thought it would bead off and not be damp.
I personally found the best method is to apply the wax with a hairdryer. Rub a small amount of wax in the desired area, use the heat of the hairdryer to melt the wax in and then repeat with layers. This should allow the water to bead off nicely! Regards, Harry.

It is dark navy, and I personally found it more than warm enough with just a t-shirt/baselayer underneath for everyday use. Harry

You could, but I personally wouldn't. You'd be baking. A midweight fleece would be a more suitable midlayer with this.

@@OneBrokeBloke Not really. I've tried both and they're not a million miles apart in outright warmth; the Skogso is just meant for less arduous activities (light walking, everyday use, etc).
Can you please make more of this kind of reviews from brands? I'm looking for a warm and weather proof jacket not to long and looks to wear it most of the time for casual and walking(and some winter camp trips) what is your advice? :) I hope you can help me..

Hey I wanted to know it this jacket suited for trekking and mountaineering?
We wouldn't recommend the Skogso padded for trekking and mountaineering, for that we would point you more towards the Keb and Bergtagen products from Fjallraven, they are more geared towards those activities, the Skogso Padded is a fairly heavy winter jacket better suited to more casual pursuits and bushcraft where the weight and pack-size are not an issue.
Does jacket wash well? Or does padding mat together? I desire to remove strong wood smoke fire smell.
As long as you follow the washing instructions you shouldn't run into any issues with It coming out in good condition.
Great review. How do you think the Skogso Padded would hold up to colder temps? I'm Calgary, Alberta and temps were around -20 degrees Celsius over the weekend with a wind chill of -30. I know its all quite subjective. For reference I tend to wear a HH rain jacket over an Arcteryx fleece or Patagonia Nano Puff in these types of conditions and find that to be quite warm. Assuming the Skogso is waxed and can block most of the wind I think it should be fairly warm, right...thoughts?
Based on what you currently wear, the Skogso Padded will be a great option for you. Here in the UK we don't tend to get temperatures that cold, however we're comfortable around -5 degrees Celsius with just a t-shirt or lightweight baselayer underneath. If you find that you need to add another layer underneath (which I doubt you will!) it has a roomy enough cut to allow you to fit your Arc'teryx fleece underneath. Kind regards, Harry.
Thanks Harry! I ended up picking up the Skogso Padded and tried it out in some -15c weather the other day. With just a t-shirt I was surprisingly warm while walking around. Dare I say I overheated a little while shovelling the snow. Its a great jacket to say the least. All the pockets are smart and useful, looks sharp and fits well (Medium) with enough a room for sweater or fleece underneath. Very happy with the purchase. Hi, I'm located in Toronto with tempature that occasionally gets to -20 wind. In saying that I typically run quite warm in body temperature and would sweat with a big down filled jacket. My question is regarding the snow, will this keep me dry for those snowdays we get?

Great video and great review! I am interested in getting this Padded Skogso, but I'm afraid that it will be too warm for my winter climate! Within what temperature range would you say this jacket can be worn? I live in the desert of the southwestern United States and it gets between 30F to 65F in winter here. (-1C to 18C)
It's difficult to say as it depends what you're wearing underneath, how fast you're moving, how warm you are as a person, etc. For everyday use around 0°C, it'll be about right, but for walking/hiking you'll find it too warm.
Great review, I have one too. Amazing jacket with pretty much everything I need. Beware of the sizing, I found it is quite roomy. I usually wear a jacket in size Large, but this one Medium fits perfectly for me. (42inch chest)

Good day Paul. I have a question about the Skogso (not the padded version), and I know you own one. Does the hood and interior of the coat have any type of lining or does the G-1000 touch your skin directly? I know the padded version comes with a lovely lining that's very soft to touch. I was hoping for a similar or identical lining on the non-padded version.
Hi Chris, Paul rarely looks on RUclips, however I also have a Skogso, (as do many of Trekitt's staff members), and can confirm that the standard Skogso does not have a lining of any sort, it's the same on the inner as it is on the outer. I've never found the G-1000 touching skin to be a problem. Regards, Harry.

The Skogso Padded and standard Skogso are almost identical size wise, the only difference is the Skogso Padded has slightly shorter arms.

tengo una de estas, de cuerpo me va holgada, me sobra para llevar debajo un jersey de lana grueso, de brazos esta muy estrecha, esta descompensada, tengo los brazos delgados y con el jersey debajo apreta en los brazos, la manga es muy estrecha comparado con el cuerpo. esta bien acabada y la tela interior es muy suave, pero el g-1000 se arruga mucho si la llevas doblada en maletero.
Are these super snug in the waist? I'm looking for a new jacket, I normally wear XL in most other brands to get a little more girth in the waist. I'm not fat, but I'm also not skinny, 230 pounds, 6 foot 2. Trying to get a feel for whether I should get a large or a XL.
Our sizing guide indicates that the Skogso in an XL would fit anyone with a 41.5-44.5" chest and a 36.5-41.5" waist. In terms of height, this size will be spot on too; I hope that helps!

Hello, nice review. I’m 5'8 187 lbs and usually wear a large on jackets. Do you think that the sleeves would be way too long for me since you tested this jacket at 6'3??
Possibly, but the simple solution is to tighten the velcro around your wrists. You probably won't notice a few centimetres of extra folded material between your shoulder and wrist. Harry
This jacket has a high "ape index", which means it will fit you better if you have longer arms than normal. I love this jacket, but because I've got normal lengthy arms I have to pass on it and look for something else.
Those Scandinavians with their long limbs!

Very nice review. How does this jacket compare to the Greenland Winter Jacket? I saw a nice discount for the Greenland version, but im not sure about how warm it is. (Im from The Netherlands)
The Skogso is a slimmer, more tapered fit and uses a synthetic insulation to provide warmth, whereas the Greenland Winter uses a pile lining and is much more of a 'square' cut. They're both quite similar in warmth, but the Greenland is definitely a little more everyday orientated.

I'm looking for a versatile jacket to take on those winter long weekend city trips around Europe's cold capitals (Oslo, Copenhagen, Cracow, etc). I understand that my needs are somehow different from those of a hiker in the wild. When walking around town you can shelter if it's pouring down whereas in the countryside you have to stand what the skies send you. Also, low cost airlines really limit the amount of luggage you can affordably carry. Layering is great in the wild, but a overkill around town I understand. You just don't want to strip off every time you get into the bus, museum or cafe. Hence my doubt choosing the right jacket.... I'd like something I can wear with a long sleeve t-shirt, a light jumper or alike and still be warm in -5ºC/+5ºC and look smart. That is windproof and can endure a light shower. That is Hooded and not too bulky or baggie. I'm 6" tall and 90kg, athletic complexion with a pretty broad back and long arms. Fjällräven Yupik Parka imho is a good starting point as I love the brand. What would be your top 3 recommendations? Have I made my point? Maybe this gives you an idea for another great video clip ;) My apologies as English isn't my mother tongue.

I bought one, best investment ever made. These jackets are made to last 10 years at least, if not longer. Super comfy, lot's of storage, excellent quality and placement for your hands.
The only thing that bothered me was it's a bit too long, but when I walk around I just fold the bottom a bit on the inside to fit my waist, and then it's perfect.
Glad to hear it's treating you well! The Scandinavians are a tall bunch, so their jackets tend to be a little longer than the average.
just got mine today, lovely jacket. love the abundance in pockets. usually I wear size L but I had to order a size M, in size L the sleeves were too long and it was somewhat roomy.
Agreed, especially the toasty hand pockets!
Bought my original Skogso jacket watching the Trekkit videos. I simply combine it with my Montane Prism or my Fjallraven fleece. I wish Fjallraven would do a more modular system of layering with jackets and insulation.

@@trekitt Yeah. North Face still do zip/click in I think. Years ago I had a North Face hard shell and a fleece that I could combine when needed. Had them for years. I'm a layering type of person, so I never commit to one bit of clothing to do it all. Just thought Fjallraven might have missed a trick. Anyway, bought my Skogso from you guys couple of years back. Superb jacket. Your gear videos and service are both first class.
@@davemcdave2169 Whilst Fjallraven don't delve into zip/click in layers, they do produce layers in the traditional sense. I.e, down & synthetic insulating layers, fleece midlayers, hardshells, softshells, etc.

can it be used as a ski jacket?

For a skiing holiday yes, this jackets can be used as a ski jacket for on-piste skiing and will keep you warm when walking around the resort. However, I would not use this jacket for any back-country or cross-country skiing activities.

It's a very heavy and not particularly packable piece; if you were to overheat you would be carrying around more weight than is necessary. It's more aimed at everyday use rather than active use, and as a result won't breathe as well as dedicated pieces too.

How does it compare the Kiruna for warmth?
Very similar, however if we had to choose it would probably be the Skogso Padded. The main difference is the fit; the Kiruna is very 'square', whereas the Skogso is a long, slim fit.

You say this is not waterproof yet teh Fjallraven website says it is water resistant ?
Hi, this jacket is water "resistant", but it is definitely not "waterproof". It will keep out light rain or snow for a time but eventually water will get in as there is no protective membrane or taped seams. Please do not rely on this jacket to keep you completely dry in really wet conditions.

G-1000 is not waterproof, even with wax I'm afraid. It will be more water-resistant, but to be fully waterproof you'd need to go for something with their Hydratic or Eco-Shell membrane.
How does the Kiruna Padded compare to the Skogso padded for warmth and fit? I saw you mentioned somewhere the Kiruna padded is as warm as the Skogso but more square cut? Is it as square as the greenland winter? Thx!
The Skogso has 145g/sqm of insulation compared to the Kiruna's 100g/sqm, so the Skogso Padded will be warmer. The Kiruna isn't as boxy as the Greenland Winter, but it's probably half way between the Skogso and the Greenland. Kind regards, Harry.

What would you recommend between the Ovik Lite and the Skogso Padded?
Hi Chris, this depends on your usage. The Skogso Padded features a synthetic insulation, therefore if it gets wet it will still maintain the majority of it's warmth. The Ovik Lite however uses down, so if you get caught out in a heavy shower and the down gets wet, you'll lose pretty much all of your warmth and will have to tumble dry the jacket when you get home. That being said, the Ovik Lite will pack down smaller than the Skogso.
Wet, cold winter conditions = Skogso Padded
Dry, autumn/spring conditions = Ovik Lite
What do you prefer between the Skogso Padded and the Greenland Winter?
Personally I prefer the Skogso as it's a slimmer fit, better suited towards trekking and general walking. The Greenland Winter jacket is a far bigger, more square cut, however it is bombproof and will most likely outlive the person wearing it! Regards, Harry.

Warmth and breathability are both in favour of the Skogso Padded. The main benefit to the Greenland Winter is it's incredible ability to never die!

This depends which size you need, the large which Paul was wearing has long arms to accommodate taller users, after all, Fjallraven are Scandinavian and the average male over there is around 5ft 11.
Trekitt Mountain Sports I'm 5'8 size small or medium and even the small jacket sleeves are 2/3 inches too long!
Unfortunately the Scandi's are a tall bunch. I'm 6ft 2, a slim build and wear the small Skogso and the sleeves are perfect - shows how long their jackets are!
I am 6ft 2ins, about 41" chest, medium build. Would I need to go medium or large? Also, I have the High Coast Padded Jacket which I really like - is the Skogso Padded likely to feel warmer than the High Coast? Thanks.
I would go for the medium. I'm 6ft 2, a 40" chest but a slim build and I opted for a small. In terms of warmth, the Skogso padded is far warmer. The Skogso has 145g of fill weight whereas the High Coast only has 45g.
