In the studio, they usually needed just ONE TAKE for a song. Amazing. Give her brother a lot of credit, he did the arranging.

Karen and her brother Richard on the keyboards did all of the background vocals to their songs except the last song Karen recorded , "Now" which was released after her death. Karen is always on in the top 10 of greatest vocalist lists. Her voice was just so smooth with no apparent break between head and chest voice. Her lower range is stunning with perfect control of her breathing and viibrato. Her loss is still felt by all of us who grew up listening to their music. There will never be another Karen Carpenter!

“Close to You” & “Top of the World” \ she thought her real talent was at drums & her mom only showed love to the son in documentaries. I remember everyone sang their songs on the bus for school. She was a tortured soul but we never knew. Most people feel bad learning that after she died. Because we loved what she gave to our lives. Sweet memories. ❤

This song was written by Paul Williams, who wrote several of their hits. He once said, "I thought my songs would never be on any album, but then an angel (Karen) sang my song, and changed my life forever."
John Bettis, who played in a jazz trio with Richard and Karen before they became The Carpenters, was asked, "What did she sound like when you first heard her?" His answer was, "She sounded just like you hear her today. She was 16 years old, and already had that voice, and she didn't work on it. It was a God-given gift that she was born with." John also wrote 38 of their hits with Richard.
I first heard her voice 50 years ago, and I have yet to hear any other voice, female or male, that can touch the soul like Karen does. No one comes close.

I loved all the Carpenters’ songs, and they had so many. Back in the day, as a teenaged girl, if I was feeling kind of down, I could just go in my room and listen to that music and even sing along, and somehow it just helped me to get through whatever was bothering me. Happy upbeat music can do that too, but there was something therapeutic about listening to beautiful music sometimes that just kind of felt healing! Glad to know that young people are discovering some of the great music from the past! To name just a few songs I liked - Top of the World, Sing (Sing a Song), Superstar.😮

Richard Carpenter was really overshadowed by his amazing sister...but he's amazingly talented. A genius at "arrangements". The Carpenters did their own backup vocals...and those amazing little instrumental "solos" in many of their songs was mainly Richard's touch.

Thank you for acknowledging that we had great music in the 70s. Karen Carpenter, OMG! The collective "we" fell in love with her, for good reason. What great vocal control in the lower register, and what passion! Yes, that is her brother Richard on keyboards. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He was the arranger for most of their work. Wrote a few of their hits, and was an exceptional piano player/keyboardist.

It was sad that she didn't think too highly of herself. She thought she was too fat and overweight. She really didn't think she could sing that good; and she thought of herself as a drummer first. Her short life (1950-1983) was a sad one: she never had found that ONE LOVE that she wanted in her life. The song, "Goodbye to Love" is kind of a mirror to her life. She was very special.

He was the musical arranger and they both sang the background vocals on their recordings...Karen is absolutely "The Voice" I will always love her and she will never be forgotten, but I also give a huge "Shout-Out" to Richard for all of his diligent work & the part he played in all of their success too!!! A wonderfully insightful singer. If you're looking for a truly in depth singer you should explore Judy Garland's work. Of course "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is inimitable and surely her signature song but I'd recommend starting with either "The Man Who Got Away" from her version of A Star is Born or "Old Man River" from her 60's television variety show. Amazing performances but that's true of everything she sang.

Karen had about 15 big hit songs in only 13 years, then God needed her back in Heaven. So glad her voice is still here on Earth today for all future generations. Nobody sings like this today. Maybe Alison Krauss comes close on her best days, but not that bass.

I love "Mr Guder", the quality isn't the best but there are live recordings from Budokan that showcase her fun style and drumming. :)

Please consider Barry White singing "Can't get enough of your love babe" He's 70's! Jimmy Johns, also black, was 60's, first to falsetto in "Cause you got timimg" and "Im your handiman". Enjoy the music!

Yes I agree with you. Karen was born to sing. Whitney Houston was too. Seems you were too. Blessing… aren’t you just that.

Frank Sinatra, who was a famous vocalist and movie actor( in the 50's), begged his way on just to play harmonica on one of Karen's records.
