@@Leverguns50 its magical. Im 32 my first guns gonna be either a .357 marlin or a 45-70 marlin (45-90 maybe??) Havent figured it out quite yet. I do wanna deer hunt with it and have meat left on the deer lol
The 4 leverguns that is still in my list of wants. Winchester Model 88 in 358, savage 99 in 250-3000, Winchester 1895 in 30-06, and a Winchester 94 big bore in .356 win
Adequately demonstrating why I think the Model 1895/.405 is the best lever rifle/cartridge ever. Though the Model 71/.348 is my favorite. I have an original of both and a Miroku made repro of both. Mine were made in the 1990s (model 71) and 2002 (Model 1895). When they both were drilled and tapped for receiver sights and no unnecessary crossbolt safety. I like the case coloring on your 1895. That was not available when I bought mine.
I would have really liked to have gotten an 1895 405 like yours with the color case hardened receiver, but when I was looking for one, the only one I could find at the time was the Teddy Roosevelt commemorative model, the one with the silver receiver. I was looking for a "using" model but the price was right and Teddy would have approved. The rifle does have pretty wood and all the engraving is nice too. Best of all, the rifle shoots well and took a real nice 13 inch antelope buck. I would like to get a deer with it now. I was tempted to take it on a moose hunt but my tag was a "once in a lifetime" affair and I decided something with a bit more reach would be better. My favorite 30-06 served nicely. I would still love to take the 405 on an elk, moose, or bear hunt, but with my advancing age and deteriorating health, a deer would be more likely.
😁 watching a gel block flip flops and flying 👍. I made a comment to a guy that said he liked the way the gel block giggles and I told him to check you out .
Good morning Leverguns happy 4th of July. I have never had the pleasure of shooting the ballistic gel. Would you happen to know what one of the blocks of gel weighs? If memory serves me right, the 1895 was Teddy Roosevelts favorite rifle, for Africa, and large and dangerous game. Thanks, Tiefastman
They weigh A little more than 17 pounds, I would definitely say it was one of his favorite caliber rifle combo, I know one of his favorite was also the 1876 in 45-75 WCF
It absolutely TOSSED it. Like armor or no.. do you even live through the energy exchange? Does it knock you out if you actually do live? Entire torso = deeply bruised. Lol damnnnn
Wow, that 405 is really moving. I would like to see how your brothers uberti 50-95 with the 300 barnes would do with the gel !!! Awesome videos. Thanks
Hello again, I love these two weapons as well as these two calibers and have watched this wonderful comparison numerous times as well as left laudatory comments. A thought came to me as I was watching the outstanding penetration of the .405; have you ever compared the 40-82 Winchester using full loads of smokeless powders in a strong action to the .405? Just curious. Thanks in advance for your kind reply and God Bless!
I would be disinclined to be the shaking block of jelly at the receiving end of either but am happy I have the 405 1895 as it appears to be a bit more traumatic. TR's lion medicine. In optimization of both calibers I am going to go with John Browning's assessment that the spire type bullet will give appreciably better performance.
That 1895 is one beautiful looking rifle - appreciate you taking the trouble to run these tests - we all learn a lot from your penetration testing. I wonder how hard cast projectiles would hold up in that ballistic gel fired from some of your collection. Thanks again.
Iv always wanted a .405 Win 1895 Win rifle. I know there are bigger badder guns, small cuter tamer , but the .405 has always been like that gun that just really hit my fancy. 1895 in 7.62x54R as well. I have yet to find a 1895 Win in the calibers I want in my budget range though. I figure it isn't going to get any better with the current political environment.
Really liked the video, would be even better if the blocks had been at 100 yds, or 150 yds. I think it would show something more pertinent to a hunting scenario.
Simply amazing how much energy is delivered at the target! Always loved the 405, and 45/90 thx for sharing, I would love to see how the big 405 does at a higher velocity with the TSX bullets?
I'd love to see you get together with Scott AKA: Kentucky Ballistics and make a joint video. He's a big bore enthusiast just as you are. I'd love to see how your 45-90 and 50-110 stack up against his 458 Lott and 500NE.
As usual you produced an excellent lever gun video featuring big bores. As you know by now I love me some Big Bore Lever Guns for hunting purposes. Maybe I missed it, but if you ever run up on an original or reproduction Winchester in .40-60 (thanks a lot Tom Selleck), I would really like to know your opinion of the round. I'm considering having a gunsmith conversion to .40-60 done to one of my real Marlins but I'm just a bit reluctant to go that route since the .444 Marlin factory chambering works so well for me on hogs and deer. out to about 250 yards or so. Keep up the great Big Bore lever action videos/work! You are the best in my opinion!
I was watching the 55 gallon drum in the slo-mo. They both rocked it pretty good, all your stuff was bouncing around. I really like both of those rifles but that 45-90 is an awesome round.
Another outstanding comparison with impressive performance by both calibers. They performed just as you predicted with the longer .405 with great sectional density really penetrating deeply. I also agree that the 45-90 should have a heavier bullet because that also gives it greater sectional density. Thank you again for the great comparisons because they are very beneficial and very educational. Outstanding!

The 45-90 was originally a black powder load with lead bullet making velocities and energy way different than the handloads your using comparing it to the 405 which that was a smokeless loading. Can you put it through the real test??
The original factory Load was a 300 grain bullet doing 1530 FPS it come with soft lead it penetrated 13 boards a jacket soft point which penetrated 15 boards or a full metal jacket which penetrated 19, the 405 was a 300 grain bullet at 2200 FPS it had a soft point that penetrated 13 boards or a full metal jacket at penetrated 48 boards. according to original Winchester advertisement.

I liked watching the kinetic energy dance its dance. Shows you the raw power of the rifle/round combo. If tht was the belly of a beast (strapped down and not able to translate the energy into flying) im sure it would rip and tear more though.
I wish you'd get off all the solids and jacketed bullets and go back through your lever collection using casts only. Everyone would want to cast for you if you didn't have all the moulds you wanted to try. Don't take me wrong, I just have a special interest in the old'skool casts.
I personally based on your test would use the .405 on Boar and Buffalo. The .45-90 on Elk and Bear. Faster energy transfer on light skinned game and deeper penetration on heavier muscled game.
A new Model 1886 it’s rated for 50,000 psi in 45-70 The 92 Winchester in 454 is rated for 65000 psi which is a scale down model of the 1886 The bighorn armory model 89 is a slightly scale down model of the 86 or upscaled model of the 92 and it’s also a 65,000 psi gun, and that is the science behind what I’m doing here, making sure I’m well within the same pressure range
Normally a 405 which is a 300 grain bullet about 2300 FPS with modern powders that can be pushed a little bit faster about 3400 fps, The 45-90 with modern guns and modern powder can be pushed to 2600 FPS with a 300 grain Bullet
Love these older cartridges. Modern propellants and projectiles breathing new life into them.
