    Just home from a 950km trip in two days in the Sth Island of New Zealand on my 1999 Mille , the old girl has never missed a beat in the 82000km I have had it since 2000.Still puts a smile on the dial everytime I ride it,and most reliable bike I have owned in over 50 odd years of riding ,it will go down the hole with me.
    Have had many different bikes over the years as well but my Mille has always stayed .

    Absolutely love the video Griff, watched it a couple of times, it's Richard Scobie here from Rathfriland in N. Ireland, I bought a few things from you and spoke to you on the phone the other day, just waiting on the new rear sprocket arriving and brake pads, my 2000 RSVR Mille has just done over 41000 and is still running ok, I must come over later this year and visit you all, by the way the valve clearance has never been done, so it's about time I came over, and I will be 78 in December :), Thanks for just being there

    Just bought one last Friday, An 09/2002 RSV 1000 Mille. I am 63 now and lusted after one of these for years.
    She has done 15 700 miles in 23 years. Checked over everything, one year she done 0 miles, another over 2000 miles the rest very low average, serviced on time and dripping with carbon bits, front and rear mudguards, chain guard, air scoops. entire air box and intake conversion in carbon with Piper X Cross renegade filter. MIVV pipe (Carbon) the bike is originally from Denmark. Not sure what has been done with ecu or engine, will try and find out. Any info welcome if you know the bike.
    Only been out once. where the hell has Spring gone????? Your right, that engine stirs the soul..........cant wait for some sunny days.

    Wrote my 2006 reg 2000 mile gen one tuono off 16yrs ago,it was stuck in my garage basically as a frame engine and various boxes of bits and pieces, a week ago last Monday I decided to build it all back together, after 6 days and late nights I got it all done with Mille top yoke clipons and cables period race seat etc (looks mean as fxxk )put it in the van,took it to a very wet and windy Pembrey Circuit last Sunday thrashed the shite out of it all day, it never missed a beat, best fun I’ve had in years.

    Did Scotland on my 03 rsv a couple of yrs ago, best 1000 miles done in such a short time . Is it just me or are they bloody great on wet roads to.? The road between green welly to Oban is what there made for, (A85) amongst over great roads to. and still doesn't hang around with 50k miles ,
    Gutted I turned a edwards rep down a good few yrs ago for £4500 at a dealer. Another great video and good to see the squirrel live another day 👍👍

    My favourite ever bike and one I regret selling. Know exactly how you feel Griff as I giggled like a girl when I took my latest and third rsvr gen1 out a few weeks ago for the first time. That engine! The brakes are stonking good and that chassis more capable than the riders...mostly. I'm an old knackered git now and was worried about another rsv but love it to bits. It became the centre of attention on a ride out to the classic motor hub in Bibury...they're just loved by bike geeks like us and non bike geeks alike. Never ridden anything newer I liked better. Amazing thinking it's a 20 year old bike and my first was bought 20 years ago! You're right about Ape owners and clubs...best guys and gals ever....'specially that AP place in Tammy😉

  • @Lowfliers

    Great video! 👍Perhaps I would have liked some more info on the known issues. For example, does the Mille have the same problem with the stator as the generation after it? Because I had one of those, and now I am looking to pick up a Mille on the cheap because I love that engine so much, but I can't mentally - and financially! - cope with changing the stator, rectifier and battery every 5,000 miles.

    • @pauln6803
      @pauln6803 2 года назад +2

      Stator isn't really a problem on gen 1.
      Keep an eye on the oil level, they all lose a bit.
      According to internet knowledge (in other words could be bullshit) the Rotax V60 doesn't "burn" oil, it's the crankcase breather arrangement that spits it out.
      There's a pipe on the oil tank (dry sump) for checking the level and there's a little cut out on the side fairing but it's easier with the panel removed - Oil should be 1/2 way up the pipe when warm.
      Keep the battery in good condition or the starter motor will be lunched.
      AP covered the suspension linkage in another vid and tank deformation in another.
      Showa forks on a Mille are pretty solid but the Ohlins on the R are very susceptible to cracking at the base if the pinch bolts are over tightened and is the primary culprit of the reputation for leaky seals.
      Oil pressure sensors aren't the best but not expensive or difficult to replace but it's alarming to see the oil pressure light on your dash!
      It's a big V, so clutches get worn by frequent slipping in traffic.
      Billet slave cylinders reduce lever pull force and 1 tooth smaller front sprocket not only gives better acceleration but makes traffic less torturous.
      Brembo calipers are fantastic but the pistons need tlc or can corrode.
      Rear brake master cylinder is mounted on the side of the engine with predictable results and is a nightmare to bleed.
      Buy or make a heat shield and fit a banjo bleed combo bolt to bleed at the master cylinder for much reduced brake maintenance.
      They all look as if they were put together on a Friday after a vino heavy Italian lunch but the paint and panels are of a quality you don't really see anymore.
      Airbox kits are worth it, short exhausts are not - big V power pulses will destroy cheap cans in short order.
      Beware the sidestand it a bit too long, so be careful where you park up.
      Really they're pretty solid overall and not difficult to work on if home maintenance is your thing.

      @@pauln6803 Wow, thanks for the comprehensive write-up! More than I could have wished for!
      Sounds like I will have to intensify my search for a fine example of a Mille ... 😋

    • @ReferenceFidelityComponents
      @ReferenceFidelityComponents 2 года назад +1

      not really a problem on the Gen1. The issue with the Gen 2 is reportedly the power rating of the windings. How true this is I don't know but interweb lore is that sooner or later the ignition windings suffer as the heat from the current demand for ignition/starting damages insulation in the windings and they can short out = new stator. I've heard of the odd one going on a Gen 1 but you'd have to be one of the very few very unlucky ones. Sprag clutches are the more realistic problem and if owners don't uprate the starter solenoids to a decent 150A one then that's asking for trouble (AP workshops stock them). Uprate the solenoid and keep the battery on a tender to keep it fully charged and you'll have no problems. I'm on my 3rd RSV and bought without hesitation. Motors are generally bullet proof if regularly maintained.

    • @Lowfliers
      @Lowfliers 2 года назад

      @@ReferenceFidelityComponents Thanks for the valuable advice! Yes, I replaced the stator on my Gen 2 twice and then sold it on because I saw no end in sight. I now know of the expensive 370w-replacement proposed by Aprilia at the time (and now offered by AP), but I needed something a bit more reliable, mostly because I used the Gen 2 on track, and wringing its neck did it no good. But I really enjoyed it and I would like a "trouble free" (or sth close) alternative for the road. Hence my quest for a Mille.
