"If you want your trees branches to reach heaven, it's roots must touch hell." -old saying
I love this, kind of sounds like the original “if you can’t handle me at my worst, you don’t deserve me at my best” so I might have to steal that 🤣
Think it was Carl Jung who said it
@@kitetalesit was originally that and Carl Jung...
Marika reminded me of Tiamat from Enuma Elish - she gave birth to many minor gods, who started a war between themselves.
That sounds right!!
Melina like all of the “Fire Maidens” of the Soulsborne series is based on the Irish goddess Brigid, however there is an interesting part of the myths of Brigid which claims here to be one of the Cailleach, and over the course of the year which go from being a maiden goddess of spring and fire to the old crone of winter and ice. Which is interesting because in the myth of Brigid and the Cailleach, a hero is able kiss the Cailleach and she transforms back into Brigid, and the two are married. Brigid’s name being the etymology of the English word bride, you marry Ranni at the end of the quest line and become her “consort eternal”. Brigid is also associated with type of dolls made from straw which visual are like how the joints of Ranni’s body are and like with Ranni, Brigid’s dolls were supposed to be a place for the goddess to be able to inhabit. All of this is interesting to think about when you think about all of the theories about Melina and Ranni being connected in some ways, like that they are two halves of a single person.
Also, the Fun thing I don’t think I have seen anyone mention, there the two of them are fire an ice…like a song of ice and fire, the book series George R.R. Martin is famous for
Honestly, Gideon was very much an Odin figure. A ruthless collector of information, enforcing his stay by means of lesser brutes, and partaking in all kinds of magic. A person not worth liking, but at least someone you’d want to have on your side.
Or how Radagon is a red-haired, hammer wielding fellow with lighting in hand reminds me a lot of Thor.
Yes!! That’s such a great connection, the All-Father who sees all and has eyes and ears everywhere… 👁️👁️
@@kitetales Ong. Gideon would be a perfect Odin.
And tbh I don’t know if this is on purpose, but the three Carian children are kinda similar to Loki’s three children. He had a large wolf, a venomous serpent, and a half-dead child. Rennala had the “red lion”, the serpent king, and the bodiless soul (half dead Ranni). It may be a stretch tbh.
OH MY GOSH!! Yes!! I love that comparison so much and I totally see it, especially considering Loki was half-giant. Okay clearly you and I are on the same page about this, next time there is anything mythos related I'm working on I'll have to pick your brain!
@@kitetales Oh, please do 🕺💨 I love mythology, and it would be so cool to help out.
Most notably, the whole Valkyrie situation. I’ll have to do some re reading, but Valkyries are the spirits of deceased shield maidens, and upon their deaths are reborn as norn-like figures who personally choose slain warriors, flying with their featured cloaks.
For Malenia’s daughters to become Valkyries, they must first die, to where they may be reborn as winged warriors in service of their mother, the Goddess. Similar to how these dead warrior women are employed by Odin. Now, Malenia is nothing like Odin, but the idea of feminine powers and death relating to a Valkyrie is definitely there.
To boot, Valkyries fly with their magical swan fathered cloaks. Malenia can fly, similarly derived from a real flying animal, with the use of butterflies.
@@kitetales Another parallel was Loki’s parentage. Loki is half-giant on his father’s side, and is thus regarded to have inherited his destructive nature. Because his mother was a Goddess, presumably of the Æsir, Loki would therefor adopt her name into is surname. Hence Laufey-son.
Radagon was considerably a nobody - a mere red-haired warrior who partook in fundamentalism. Loki’s father was a nobody, whose name denotes to a very dangerous fighter - that being Farbauti. Loki only became known because of his mother, similarly to how the three children of Rennala make up the Carian family, a royal house that she established even before their births. Rennala was a Queen, Radagon a mere warrior. Laufey a Goddess, Farbauti a mere giant.
And of course Loki was a child of three, along with his two brothers Helblindi and Byleistr.
I’d say the world building is what I admire most about Elden Ring, it does feel like a distinct world overflowing with its own history. The way FromSoftware draws from Western mythologies is unique even among Japanese game developers known for reinterpreting Western culture in interesting new ways (I.e. Metal Gear).
Yeah it’s incredible how they’ve made their own intensive history in just one game; usually world building to that extent can take a series.
Renala, Rani and Rena are clearly inspired by Hecate. Who is the goddess of magic and witchcraft, represented in 3 forms (elderly, young and adult) also related to the phases of the moon.
She was also greatly adored by the Carians in Anatolia. which justifies them being from the Carian house in the game.
Freya and Frig started off as the same person. Freya by some accounts meant “Lady” and was a title. Historians and linguists believe that the evolution of the title Freya became her own person over time. Loki does at one point insult all the gods and Freya and Frig get their own turn of insults. Freya and Frig also refer to each other, so they definitely were separate gods at some point, but some believe that they started out as the same god due to the word Freya meaning “Lady” as a title.
Oh that’s super interesting! I read a few different explanations of her and no one even mentioned the definition, thank you for that!
@@kitetales If you are curious, this is where I learned it from. ruclips.net/video/5eN3wNgPARM/видео.html
I always saw visual parallels between Malenia and Radahn's stalemate, and the evolution of cults around Athena and Ares as sibling gods of war. Radahn ultimately is reduced to a bloodlust beast just swinging at anything, while Malenia is the "blade who's never known defeat" and renown for both her swordsmanship and battle tactics, in line with the image of Athena (who is frequently depicted with a flowing red cape.) There was an actual culture war around their cults due to Athena having such prominence in Greek society, philosophy, and law, while the Romans in their conquest and appropriation of Greek lands and art minimized the importance of Athena/Minerva and placed greater emphasis on Ares/Mars as a representative of the perfect soldier and general, the emblem of war.
Athena was born from Zeus' cracked skull fully formed. She's also one of the divine virgin goddesses that populate a lot of Greek myths and stories (a la her sister Artemis, who is an eternal maiden/child and associated with the moonlit night). The strange sisters Gowyn discovers in the swamp of Caelid after the bloom of the Scarlet Aeonia (Millicent, Polyana, & co) may have been born fully formed from the flower, like spores that took root. Possibly actual daughters of Malenia, reproduced asexually from the bloom like actual flowers? Which would, if Malenia is inspired by Athena, retain her divine virgin goddess status.
Omg wait Miquella = Artemis comparisons. Miquella being this pretty, eternal gender-ambiguous child, the power to eclipse the sun and bring about a false night, while Artemis is associated with the night and hunting under moonlight, also St. Trina's priests used special arrows to spread her teachings and it's likely St. Trina is Miquella's female persona. Moonlight archery goddess? Hmmmmmmmmm.
I always love to hear about Irish mythology. It's not something you see enough but alot of the stories are really cool. Funny to see the parallels in a game I wouldn't expect.
It seems like such a fun mythology! I hadn't known much about it at all until reading this article which I highly recommend for more connections: www.inverse.com/gaming/elden-ring-irish-mythology
George Martin draws heavily from Irish myths in all of his stuff. Since he was involved in making the background lore of Elden ring, it’s not too surprising to see it here. I agree that it’s fascinating stuff and it’s a shame that the stories aren’t as widely known and shared. And although there are obvious parallels with Yggdrasil and the Erd Tree, there’s good reason to suspect that the real inspiration is Bíle, the Celtic variation of the tree myth. Or maybe it’s some combination of them I guess.
I'm not too familiar with his work (watching Game of Thrones doesn't count, right??) but I heard he loves to incorporate references to historical events in his story. It's a great way to get people reading about the source material!
@@schonmp A _lot_ of fantasy writers draw from it, even if subconsciously (say taking inspiration from another writer that they themselves took inspiration from it, Tolkien for instance) however as we all know -at least those of us embroiled in the nerdery- Irish/Celtic lore is a very deep and very confusing mythos to directly adapt -let alone pronounce- however it's a treasure trove of interpretation and inspiration. The instant we came across Blaidd (literally just "wolf") and Siofra -- I had a pretty good idea what kind of weirdness and beauty we were in store for. I swear that's got to be a Boudicca reference in this game somewhere, I just don't know where yet....
@@kitetales I mean I'd say having watched GoT counts enough that if you look at it with a specific Celtic lens many things will jump out in a "oh, hey wait a second!" sort of way. I've never watched the show myself (an episode or two doesn't count) but having heard of it just through third-party babble and the zeitgeist a lot of things ping -- dire wolves for example and the "brother/sister" bond of them, the Woman in Red (I think she was called something else but you get the idea), the ice wall, the White Walkers (more Norse but close enough).
I love these game/lore videos. Especially the Forrest ones you did a while back. These are great!!! Thank you.
Awww thank you so much!! I’m so excited to return to The Forest with their game in February!!
I enjoyed this video a lot! Thank you for the time and effort for making and sharing it with us! 💙
Awww thank you for much for your lovely comment! 🥰
I had no Idea about most of these, great video!
Thank you!! 😊
Really fun video, thanks for making it
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
This video is so interesting and cool, great job!
Thank you so much! 😊
Eiglay = Eglė, the Queen of Serpents:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egl%C4%97_the_Queen_of_Serpents
So it looks like Rykard “married” the snake god, & they now share a body, just like Marika & Radagon? Does that make Rykard Eiglay’s “Elden Lord”? So confusing, but I did like the Eglė mythology tucked away somewhat surreptitiously.
I know you made this vid like months ago, but I was just going through your ER playlist, & this entry reminded me of the Serpent Queen folk tale (from Lithuania, maybe?). So I hope you find it fun.
Me, I’m still trying to find out why Tanith wears a mask, so … back to the Theory Mines for some more digging!
I like your work. Subbed. Thank you. 😊🙏💜
Hell yeah new video!!!😊
You know it Leat!! 😊
This was an amazing video! I am playing god of war ragnorok and you referencing Baldur really hyped me up
Thank you so much!! And ME TOO!! Love how Baldur looks in GoW; they were super creative with the depiction of the Norse gods.
Great video I'm not too big or familiar with elden ring but this was informative and educational. Also love that background looks nice. 😊
Thank you so much!! That’s a mural I installed, really classes up my office 😊
@@kitetales Oh nice 👌 definitely different and unique! Very artistic too!🙂
What's most interesting to me is how they paired the mythology with a strong basis in Jungian psychology. Seeing as the Lands Between is really just an Inner-World inside of either Marika's, Radagon's, or even Miquella's psyche.
Its nuts when you realize that
A few of these connections, I've made on my own. Some, I have not. I'll be subscribing now. Good work.
Thank you very much! 😊
amazing amazing video 🎉🙌🙏
Thank you so much! 🥰
Great video!
Thank you very much! 😊
I love it!
Thank you!!
Love how your still making videos on Elden Ring. As a mythology buff I've always been intrigued by by the Norse and Greek Mythos.
I really love Norse mythology!! Just finished reading Neil Gaiman’s book on it and found it so enjoyable.
If you don't already do it, you need to consider voice acting. You've got a smooth unique voice and even if you didn't "act" with it, you've got a nak for reading and speaking in a measured, calm tone that lends itself well to audiobook-style content.
Also brilliant content! Just stumbled across your channel and I'm loving it, very informative. I ADORE Elden Ring so your content has hit the spot, really filling in a lot of gaps in my searching for story/lore in-game.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I was just thinking last night that I really want to start a channel for narration, so I’m taking your kind comment as my sign! 🥲
Your content, voice, and demeanor are all so spectacular. I would be so happy if VaatiVidya stumbled across your channel and asked to collaborate with you on an Elden Ring video, so you can finally get the amount of attention and views that your channel deserves
Thank you so much for your comment and taking the time to leave me such a nice reply, I really appreciate your words. 😊 It’s funny but years ago, Vaati and I were meant to work on a video together but plans fell through; would love to be able to revisit that with him if he ever was looking for someone to work with again down the line!
I love your Elden Ring videos and the lore of the game in general. Just yesterday I stumbled on a picture of a tree that I thought looked a lot like the minor erdtrees, minus the shining golden leaves of course. I think the erdtree is at least partially based on the English Yew tree, otherwise known as the tree of the dead. Give it a Google. I think you'll find it at least mildly interesting! 😉
Great video! Can you tell me the name of the music during the Rykard segment please?
Thank you, James! And yes certainly: it's "Argonne" by Zachary Hickman! ruclips.net/video/s1HJjdlAOEs/видео.html
Love these real world Lore inspirations. And it's totally in GRRMs wheelhouse to pull from them. I'd be remiss not to mention Jörmungandr, the world eating serpent from Norse mythology as a possible inspiration for George and FromSoft.
It’s been a lot of fun learning more about mythology and seeing all of the many inspirations!
I'm not a fan of the game but I'm a fan of your soothing voice for sure, watched the whole video without understanding what it's about 😆
Awwww i love you so much thank you!! 🥰
The story of Baldr goes much deeper in Elden Ring. This all ties back to Rennala, who is Rindr (Rinda and Rind), who gets tricked by Odin, resulting in a child called Vali/Bous. This whole thing ties back to the killer of Hodr who actually killed Baldr, and the killing of Rindr's children. This all ties back to Radagon, Blaidd and Alecto.
Another source for the world building that I don't see enough people talking about is Der Ring des Nibelungen.
4:33 I'm pretty sure it's just George RR Martin's fetish to constantly have incestuous twins featured in his writing.
Our queen!
Whoa, I accept this coronation!
@@kitetales now to wait till I’m knighted by her majesty.
I am officially knighting you! Permission to cause chaos whenever needed
@@kitetales oh hellll yeah. Let’s rage 😎
And Turtle Pope was based on the pope... obviously.
There is A LOT motives from mythology, folklore, real history. When I was playing elden ring, I always had this feeling, that I know this story. Unfortunately I didn't write this motives down, so I can't remind myself anything.
Oh yeah there is a TON. It’s pretty neat how it’s all over the game but remixed.
"Devouring the sun"... Kaathe?!
100% YES. 👏
Kite Tales!
Ordinal!
@@kitetales SelatEtik!
How about Morgott and Mohg?
Oh there are a ton of connections available to make, I just looked at a small handful here.
