i love the comedic flair that this version of Emma has.
um ok I actually think the gwenyth Paltrow /Jeremy northem is the funniest one.
def all the other versions seem to focus very heavily on the romance aspect and completely ignore the comedic aspect of the novel, which in my opinion was the best part. glad to see it represented well!
When reading the book I actually sensed that Jane Austen's focus was more on the comedy aspect rather than the romance.
To be fair the 1996 version was very funny too
Jane Austen focused on the comedic part in the novel, that's why this movie is so well done. I've read the book 3 times and this movie really gets it right.
Mr. Knightley really touched that nosebleed and the bloody handkerchief like it's not gross at all. That's true love y'all
Is a nose bleed gross?😂
It’s just blood 🩸
@@bettertodie27 blood is gross and potentially infectious. At least other people's blood.
@@SnorriSnibble It's real blood. The fake one didn't work and Anya started stress-bleeding herself
@@natgonzza uhm... that wasn't the topic, but ok...
Actresses: I can cry on cue
Anna Taylor Joy: BITCH PLEASE, I can BLEED on cue
Will you marry me?

This movie was AMAZING. Jane Austen made fun of these characters in her novel, and the movie gets that comedic side perfectly done. To me THIS is how you adapt corectly a Jane Austen book.
And then we have Netflix's Persuasion...
@@devilynroxen oh my i cringed soo hard while watching it
"as a friend" "as a FrIeNd" lmao his reaction gets me every time 😂
LMAO Knightley’s brain trying to calculate what Emma was trying to say about Harriet during the confession scene is amazing
Honestly buried in the dialogue of that scene is an AU I would be VERY down for
I feel like he started smiling out of shock/surprise at first not just because he was confused, but because he felt relieved. Like he was sincerely expecting her to disregard or pretty much reject him without a thought. And here she is instead yelling at him, it means that he does mean something to her. what she was shouting about hadnt registered yet but he was just happy bc this was not what he was expecting adn thats a good thing. Also that thing he said in the beginning "I wish for once emma's love was no requited so she would have to pine over something for once" and this time she genuinely thought her love wasn't requited so what he said came true
*I thought his collar was gonna swallow him*
The swallow look was very much in the fashion back then 😝
I laughed wayyy too hard at this lmaoooo 😂😂😂😂😂
It looked worse on Frank since the effect was worsened by his mountainous shoulders.
I thought the collars were ridiculous and over exaggerated then I looked it up and they're pretty period accurate.
The Pikachu faces were just too good 🤣
I know :v
I was laughing so hard
Oh no! This Emma is so awful. ( I meant the version of it)
@@bebitamira3054 it’s great actually, have you even seen the full film?
"Better to be without sense, altogether, than misapply it as you do" .. Such films has increased the sense of observing and learning .. eloquent English!
It's a direct quote from the book! :)
ai Yes even more good, I wish all of the western world spoke in similar fashion .. 🙂
@@ia490 oh really? I've the books translated to my native language as it's easier for me to understand and enjoy it like light reading. Once im done with these awful exams i want to read them in the original
Emma is supposed to be a comedy. She is a queen bee. Knightley gets really happy when he finally makes her lose her composure over him.
She started the movie opening her eyes and ended it closing them avsghsgsnahsvsjsksgsvsndj I love happy endings
Buena observación ❤
Harriet is so pure and cute
Harriet needs eyebrows. Constant distraction. Great job tearing up 6 or 8 times though.
@@jre617 the actress has bare brows like that IRL too, I guess she didn’t let them draw her a pair 😩
@@jre617 I think people without obvious eyebrows have a unique charm to their faces
This was perfect....except for the omission of Emma literally dragging Mr Knightley when he rolls on his floor frustrated

"She's just a friend" -Adrien Agreste
@@alicevicariously2396 Adrien gets it from his father 😂
Miraculous fan here that word HURTS😭😭😭
I just adore the way mr Knightley says "Emma". Its so darn cute
You missed the best burn, when he sat next to Emma when Jane was playing. He said it, than looked shocked at how mad Emma looked and than surprised because she genuinely looked like he had hurt her feelings.
I feel like that wasn't included because it *had* genuinely hurt her feelings. And if im not wrong he noticed that he had gone too far as well. Gotta check the book for that one
yeah, he was really mean for that, poor emma.
They're not 'textbook' pretty and handsome basicallu...the lead male exudes charisma and sexiness in his own right, and Anya just pure unique.... which add the quirkiness to the setting/storyline/costumes. Reminds me of Audrey Hepburn! Please be aware that most of the gestures and facial expression in this movie are complicated one, not just about everyone can do it! You have to be downright photogenic, let's face it. Also the whole story have fairytale vibes... It's just adorable
I agree that mr. knightly is not textbook handsome, but Anya is absolutely gorgeous.
@@thaliakittycake8496 my husband finds her odd looking while i think she is just lovely. I think there must be something about her that does strike some people odd. A uniqueness maybe
@@therealfinnaspring8585 I feel like she is a bit odd looking as well, although I know she is gorgeous! I don't know what it is
Anya??? 😶
@@therealfinnaspring8585 It's the eyes. I think she is beautiful but my mom for example doesn't think she is so pretty because she doesn't like people with eyes that have a wide gap. Which Anya does
Hands down best proposal scene 😂
Yes yes yes, this movie changed my mind and they are the best Austen romance now
elizabeth bennet and mr darcy are the best couple ever and nobody can change that!!!
Oh no, them's fightin' words! XD No really though, this movie made me appreciate these two on a whole new level, I didn't think I'd love an Austen movie as much as Pride and Prejudice but this one was just too exquisite.
Let me preface that I love Mr. Knightley. But have you read/seen Persuasion? Captain Wentworth's letter is the most romantic thing ever written.
@@betheroo2397 mr darcy will always be my fave daddy lol
Anne and Captain Wentworth loved LONGEST!!!!!!!! Lol I love Jane Austen 😇
This version of emma was so perfect!!!
Bill Nighy in his fort of screens is a MOOD
Harriet is like a lost puppy 🥺she’s so adorable
AS A FRIEND!
“as a fRiEnd” and the “i can not” part (with him trying to understand what is she saying) killed me 😂😂😂😂
I haven't even watched the movie yet, but that Piano scene surprised me so much that I dropped my phone and I burst out laughing 😂😆
The portrait scene always confused me. Correct me if I'm wrong: Knightley called Emma's drawing of Harriet too tall to be sarcastic because what's really wrong with it is that it's ridiculous, right? And her father saying that they should frame it when it's done, that was an unintentional burn because Emma was already done and her dad couldn't tell, right?
They didn't think the painting was good. It's a scene to demonstrate how Emma thinks a lot about herself, since she considers herself a good artist and she is just average.
I checked the book and there is the impression that he is laughing a bit at the circle of flatterers Emma has. Also, this gem:
"You have made her too tall, Emma," said Mr. Knightley.
Emma knew that she had, but would not own it.
xd
It's clearer in the book that Emma did draw Harriet too tall. Knightley is not prone to flattering Emma as everyone else is so he says it. While Emma knows it she is too stubborn to admit it, especially to Knightley.
And yes, bless her Dad. Trying to be supportive but the painting is already done which is why Knightley laughs at the unintentional burn.
I love how the father just there not to be bother by their constant bickering 🤣
This adaptation made me snort several times it's comedic timing is flawless
Emma’s dad will always be my favorite.
Do you guys feel a draft?... just above the knees?
"a chill and sickly draft"
a chill and s i c k l y d r a f t
i mean i wish my dad was like that
get her jane!
I’m not joking, BISH! 😂
the actress that plays emma actually really does have a pretty soprano voice
this movie was so good!!!! and also way sexier(?) than I envisioned the story when reading the book! Mr. Knightley looks so starkly different from my mental image of him - his face is much puffier, and he's more raggedy looking, and he's blonde, and I understand why he's attractive while at the same time not finding him especially attractive.
I'm 72 and I think Johnny Flynn is one of the MOST HANDSOME men I've ever seen! His lips have a perfect shape. His eyes are grayish light blue. His nose is kind of pointed and very masculine. The shape of his head is oval. When the camera is pointed at his face when he stands in place at the wedding, that shot showed how precious and perfect his face is
I wish I was 35 years younger, I would travel the world just to be able to breathe in his essence...And he can sing and write music and poetry.
@@cherylrobinson3256 You have impeccable taste, ma'am :)
He's not male model handsome, but his rugged looks combined with his charisma, sensitivity, humour and honour make him very attractive indeed.
"The end is so perfect." Agreed

The music in this film just helped the comedy so much more 😂
I am a huge Jane Austen fan. And loved the version with Emma Thompson and Jeremy Northam. Especially when he says "marry me my darling, lovely friend" it's just breathtaking. I was SURE I was going to detest this version. But it's so clever and funny. They did an excellent job. I really did enjoy this interpretation and the fact that it was true to the fact that Jane Austen did indeed write this as a comedic piece!
Yes, "Sense and Sensibility" with Emma Thompson was fabulous. This is my favorite of all the "Emma" versions.
I just watched this film because of your video and let me tell you I LOVED SO MUCH, thank you thank you so much for making these video that inspires me to watch the actual filme, bring me so much hapiness i can't thank you enough for real thank you so much and you're right the end was so perfect 😍😍

Honestly Emma works so well as a movie. Like in the novel you have to imagine everything from a third person perspective but this just shows you how funny and ironic it is. especially when Emma gets proved wrong over her silliness. my girl emma is dumb but i love her lmaooo
Finally a Mrs knightly that is actually good looking
You have clearly not seen the 2009 bbc mini series. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this knightley and emma really arent handsome imo
They're both attractive
Personally think 2009 is hot too but my standards are quite low (not 1996 low, however)
And fun! I always felt Mr Knightly was so boring.
I know he might not count but Paul Rudd is very gorgeous
The best ending ever :3
Watching this with no context is great
This video made my day. THANK YOU!
Hahaha that Pikachu stickers on their faces. You’re so funny
Perfect!
Gracias por este video, es demasiado bueno. Ja, ja. Me he reído tanto. Esta adaptación tiene un humor tan raro y original... lo de la hemorragia nasal fue inesperado y loco, pero cumplió totalmente para hacerlo divertido.
Por cierto, las caras de Pikachu lo fueron todo :P :3

I love the absolute ridiculousness of this movie
i just watched it and honestly i wasn't excited but I really liked it. It is soo good.
Ah, the very last movie I saw before we went into pandemic lockdown. It was so enjoyable, it was...perfection.
I've been obsessed with the actors since then. Luckily they've been in other productions I've been able to check out. In particular "Love Sick " and Queen's Gambit" have kept me happy in a hard time.
Stay well!
I just saw it last week, mostly because of Johnny Flynn... immediately afterwards I was like hmmm I guess I'm rewatching lovesick a fourth time as well haha. Anya Taylor joy was also sooo good, I'll check the queen's gambit sometime soon

Mr. Woodhouse is hilarious here :D
I first watched this movie not liking Mr Knightley, but then I loved him lol
Me too lol, i hated in the beginning and now i want a mr knightley or a mr darcy or both :v
Knightly says "Emma" 13 times on the grassy hill before, during and after the proposal.
And why doesn't Harriet have eyebrows?
The actress is a ginger so her eyebrows are really light
this is so funny 😂😂
Loved the movie!!🤣😂😍❤️❤️❤️
I need to watch this
Akjsjdjdjd the pikachu facess! I love this version of Emma
emma's dad is the best
I live for these Regency era savagery
I grew up with the Gwyneth Paltrow version, and normally I don't really like remakes NEARLY as much as whichever version I'm familiar with already... but _my goodness_ this adaption captures SO much more real human emotion! When in any other period drama have you seen such real, relatable moments as 2:10, or when he tosses off his jackets and flops on the floor?? 😂 But it's _so relatable._ And this adaption captures the absurd, ridiculous comedy of this story and its characters so much better than the other adaptions, as well.
Did you know this is also a musical. It's set in the 80s.... yeah
i love when she sang that song, i need a video with just that song 😣😣😣😣😣❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And John Knightley who looks pretty sturdy, is believed to not be able to make it alive bec of 1 inch snow!Bill Nigly as Mr Woodhouse stole every scene he was in.
Bravo!!
i absolutely loved this movie and fell in love with harriet/mia goth❤️
I was watching Lovesick at the same time this vid popped up in my recommendations
I still can’t believe she can nosebleed at command??? Like how??? 🤭😉 cos i wanna do it... make my friends panic hahahaha!
marella castillo she didn’t, it was an accident and they improvised through it
So fun fact it was actually planned, but I think she had a bad reaction to the faux nose bleed they were giving her and it caused a real one. This is info from the directors cut btw.
