- "Growing up in Disneyland" is part biography about Ron's father, Broadway, movie, and TV star, Don DeFore, and his own autobiography. Don DeFore earned a star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame and was a household name in the 1950s and 60s. He co-starred in numerous feature films with many Hollywood legends, TV shows, and live theater. He is best known for "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" in which he played the next-door-neighbor, "Thorny," and his co-starring role as "Mr. B" in the 1960s TV series, "Hazel." The book includes much of Don's unpublished autobiography, "Hollywood-DeFore 'n After."
Enjoying ‘It Happened on 5th Avenue’ right now. Merry Christmas 🎄
I am a baby boomer and grew up in the sixties.I could hardly wait for Hazel to come on .Still watch it on reruns.
At 0:55 if you look to the right over Hazel’s head you will see a white picket fence. That’s Mr. Wilson’s house from the TV show Dennis the Menace and to the left of that fence is the Partridge Family House. Judging from where this scene is being filmed, the Baxter house is the house to the left of the Bewitched house.
Hi Ron, I just wanted to say that I have always been a super fan of your Dad since I was a little girl!! He was so totally an amazing talent! I have recently been “soaking up” all of your Dad’s videos on RUclips from his appearances on “Ozzie and Harriet”, “Hazel” as well as any other appearances and biographies! He always epitomized a good guy that was smart, handsome, and with an air of seriousness yet he was able to melt and completely do a U-turn like in many episodes of Hazel. I research the Golden Age of Hollywood Motion Pictures, TV, and Radio and oftentimes once you start delving into great beloved actors, one is sometimes disappointed at how they really were in real life. With your Dad, I found the opposite to be true……he was such a fine man in real life! I have been watching your channel chronicling your successes as well as well as your Dad’s! I know he is looking down proudly at you! Sending you many blessings!
Enjoying your book and thank you for composing it to include your father’s writings, too. Your voice sounds strikingly like your father’s!
It’s been said before, but you do sound so much like your father. Such a nice voice! He has been my longtime favorite as I am an avid Hazel watcher. You must’ve had an amazing childhood.!
Don defore was my all time favorite actor so underated and so very talented rip o great one with love and admiration anne my dad jimmy loved him too
Ron sounds a lot like his dad.
I don't remember the Silver Banjo restaurant. Interesting to know it was Don Defore's restaurant since I used to watch "Hazel" as a kid in the early 1960s. It was and still is one of my favorite TV shows. Living in Southern California, we went to Disneyland every year, the first time was probably 1961, and we always ate lunch on what we called the "tuna boat" which was the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship restaurant. It was probably my mother's idea the first time we ate there, but my sister and I liked it so we wanted to eat there every time we went to Disneyland. Not sure when the Silver Banjo closed, but I have learned about other restaurants and attractions at Disneyland that were there since opening day but I was never aware of, so those places must have closed sometime in the early to mid 1960s.
Just loved Mr. Don DeFore, such a funny great actor. I always thought he was Superman from The Adventures of Superman until my Mama told me different.
fantastico Ron!
I love to have that book.

Thanks for posting. Do U have any clips with your dad and Joe Kerns (Mr. Wilson) from Dennis the Menace ?
Love it!
I didn't know about the Silver Banjo, your book sounds very interesting. I am now subscribed.
For those who met or know the author or his siblings, many would be curious on what it is like growing up in Hollywood or Disneyland. Ron DeFore's book, Growing Up in Disneyland, gives us great insight on his life experiences and the life of his dad Don DeFore, a beloved actor of Hollywood's Golden Age and the new age of television of the 1950's. Ron, thank you for sharing your life and your Dad's and family's life with fans, friends and fellow Americans. God bless.... Jeanette 🙂
Been watching your dad on my newly purchased Ozzie and Harriett DVD set. Your father is so freakin cool and funny! Why did he leave the show?
To pursue other interests, particularly a show where he could star or co-star as he did in "Hazel" in 1961. He left O&H in 1957 the year he opened his own restaurant in Disneyland - "Don DeFore's Silver Banjo Barbecue" in Frontierland 1957-1962.
Hazel 🌞🌞🌞🌞🥧
Hi Ron, I have always wondered, why did your dad leave ozzie and harriet? I always liked his character on that show and was a little miffed when he was no longer in it....but I have been unable to search out anything online that explains why he left. Thanks and as a few people noted, you do sound incredibly like your father and look like him too.
Sorry for the delay. After five great years on the Ozzie and Harriet series (1952-57), Dad was ready to move on. As was very common in those early days of television, if you did very well in a supporting role in a popular sitcom (he was nominated for an Emmy), you and your agent would agree it was time to get "your own series." Although he did eventually get a co-starring role in the 1960s sitcom, Hazel, by the time he left O&H he had his hands full with an equally great accomplishment - Walt Disney asked him to open his own restaurant in Disneyland. Don DeFore is the only person to ever own a food establishment in the Park bearing the name of a real live person, "Don DeFore's Silver Banjo Barbecue" in Frontierland 1957-1962.

Was you on a episode of hazel? Imdb makes it look like you was on the first episode
Yes I was on the first episode of Hazel in the very last scene in the park. I'm one of Harold's football buddies. I got some of my friends to join in including Dick Van Dyke's youngest son, Barry.
Did Don's autobiography ever get published?
Some of Dad's autobiography is incorporated into my book but was never published on its own.
Yes, I know. Left me wanting more.
@@willardarmbruster8111 I could publish more, and am currently testing the waters to gauge the interest in a sequel.
@Ron Defore. I, for one, would love it. As my screen name implies, I’m a big fan.
