Dude! Keep them coming! We bought a fixer upper on a great lot in a great location, but it was poorly built and in need of repair. We are taking each room down to studs and redoing everything, and we are doing 90% of it ourselves, thanks to videos like yours. I especially appreciate the simple manner in which you explain things, and the fact that you include small tips to make things easier. Keep it up! We can't finish our home without you!

If you're having to cut the drywall while it's hung on the wall an awesome tool for that is a jigsaw, but you want to cut/snap your jigsaw blade to the thickness of the drywall (make sure to pull your blade all the way out before you measure and cut it to thickness of drywall), so it doesn't plunge too deep and hit NM cable. It cuts drywall very fast, and the cut edges are cut really clean and square, so you won't have to waste any time cleaning up the edges so new piece fits in. I saw a drywall crew that was cutting bottom 2 ft of drywall out of condos after hurricane using them and they said it's by far their preferred way b/c virtually no risk of cutting electric cable behind wall and when you feel the blade on top of a stud you just slightly lift on it, and it goes right over the stud and keeps cutting. Drywall cut out tools (the router tools) cut very fast too but they kick up so much dust and the bits snap every time you hit a nail/screw. Jigsaw hardly kicks up any dust the blade doesn't snap when you hit a nail/screw. You can use just a standard wood blade to sacrifice as a drywall blade, but it will cut miles of drywall with just one cheapo blade.

You've convinced me to give this a go! I went to the store and purchased a hawk and trowel yesterday with the intention of making beautiful drywall joints. Boy were you right about muscles! I made a heck of a mess! And I probably had the mud a little thick. So I'll keep practicing, experiment with mud consistency, and get better and better! Thanks again!

I'm going to chime in with the previous posters and thank you for your excellent videos. Too often the professionals who post videos don't provide the essential information. I've watched a score of how to drywall videos and nobody has been as through as you. Most importantly you have made the excellent point that practice makes for a good job. (I refrain from using the word perfect). Its important for DIYers to be reminded that the skill of the professional comes years of practice. Keep them coming.

With garages that are drywall during construction is also a good place to go back and redo. This will get the practice in where quality is not 100% important but can finish with a better job than the construction crew!

I did not like the hawk at first just b/c i was used to a pan and found myself dripping mud and did not like that I couldn't set it down anywhere. I later bought a trowel and I loved it right away and saves so much strain/fatigue on my joints and it applies so much more mud than a knife in one dip. But if you're gonna use a trowel it's critical that you use a hawk. I'm now used to the hawk and it also is far less fatigue than holding a pan and it cleans up so much faster than a pan. Dont throw your pan/knives away but after you get used to both of them to me the hawk/trowel is a clear winner.

@@southsideshenanigans Yeah, it was a bit of a bear to start. I had my consistency wrong and I was up on a ladder to reach the offending spot, so it was hard to apply even pressure. You should demonstrate on an actual butt joint with that flat trowel, your technique of spreading mud in the middle of a sheet of drywall is hardly comparable. I'm a level 5 finisher and have been a hawk and trowel guy for longer than you've been alive and I would never use a flat trowel on my first coat. I always used an 18" or at least 16" concave trowel on any butt joint and would double ace it if needed and saved my 12" flat for my final skim coat. Also, I saw your other video where you use a convex trowel and you stated that using a concave will dig into the paper, all I use is a 12" or 14" concave for my flat joints, The key to a great trowel is alot of use and spraying it with WD-40 after every use I don't know who taught you to finish drywall but you really have it wrong. FYI Best drywall trowels are made by Goldblatt or Marshalltown and always use a magnesium hawk and a trusty 6" knife.

Question: I bought a trowel like the ones you recommended, a curved trowel. I find that I can do the edges on a flat joint without too much trouble, but the pass back in the center, the curved ends leave furrows in my mud. Haven't been able to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Suggestions?

Those are normal and they sand off easy. That's what you want vs tool marks, they are much easier to sand off because they aren't gouges like tool marks are

Ben, I was wondering what type of mud you would recommend to use. I have done some research lately on a product that is called "Durabond 90" made by Sheetrock and it comes in the regular type and one that is supposed to be easier to sand. Are these these good products and which one of these would be best for a beginner?

Durabond is great for pre fill. 90 is for minutes. It’ll cure in 90 minutes. For taping you want red or blue mud. It’ll take longer to dry.
