Great tips! I've been learnin Mandarin a little over 5 months now and really like it! I know about 60 simple phrases and sentences and gettin better every day. I listen to Mandarin podcasts and music daily and write down a phrase or sentence that might be useful to me. I then read it out loud a few times til I can say it. Once I know the phrase I practice speakin it. I spoke a lot of Chinese to the horses I worked with, and best if all, they don't complain or change the subject! Thanks for the tips!

I would say when you’re in the beginning and intermediate stages and you are often encountering words you don’t understand, you really shouldn’t look up 100% of them. Because then it easily begins to feel daunting and not fun. I remember seeing advice somewhere before to look up maybe 25% to 50% of the words you don’t understand, and let the other ones go.

Thanks for watching! I actually made a video explaining a bit of my decision, I think it was titled why I quit my job, but essentially a combination of wanting to learn more about my parent's heritage and culture and a fascination with language learning. I love travelling so coming to Taiwan to learn as early as I could was a priority for me, I wanted to learn through immersion and practical experiences. I started with some classes in the first month or two but after that I've been self studying mostly with some online lessons here and there. All throughout I've done lots of language exchanges and joining any event or activity I was interested in to learn as much as I could. Hopefully this helps, hope you get out here, its an amazing experience, thanks for the support!
Interesting! As a adult learner I think the biggest challenge for me is to sit there and keep writing the same words over and over again... Up to a point where I don't even know what I was writing about.... I've tried to learn Chinese multiple times when I was a child but have always ran away from it. As an adult, I've also ran away from that several times already 😂haha haha... It's the most daunting thing I've ever done in my life. Last year I've self learned for a few months but yes like you said the non stop copying of words did not work at all. Now I'm really trying to find new ways and learn from others to see if I can accomplish something this time. I've been using Anki the last few days, so far so good! I'm using a list created and shared by someone online contained contents from HSK level1-4 with sound and both simplified and traditional Chinese. I think it's a good start and this time I concentrate more on listening and imitating those sounds rather than writing. After your video, let me go check out your recommendations! Thxs for sharing!

for an english native speaker, in 4 month it is possible to have a quite basic conversation with a benevolent partner and read some very simple phrases in chinese. I personally don't think it is possible to understand a native level podcast such as 大人的Small Talk. You can decipher word by word an adult book using apps and dictionaries but that is a very different experience from actually "reading" in chinese.
I can only share what worked for me, and for me I went from not understanding much at all of a native podcast to gradually understanding more and more of it over consistent listening and repetitive, that's why I'm so high on podcasts, I think they're so powerful.
@@thedanyopang You don't learn because of mindless repetition and exposition. To learn and integrate the language you have to study it. Consistent listening without studying doesn't make you understand, that sounds like magic. Humans do not learn through osmosis.

Nice man! I'm excited for you, its a fun ride! While being here I would take advantage of doing language exchanges, its a great way to get to know the locals. When I first got here I deliberately tried to stay away from any foreigners and tried to only speak Mandarin Chinese to locals (I used to live by a traditional market and would try to talk to shopkeepers when buying fruits, food, etc), it was difficult at first but I think it really helped with my Chinese. In terms of vocab theres lots of little things that would have helped if I learned sooner haha but I guess thats the fun of travel. For example: - learning basic restaurant vocab when ordering (the main meats, noodles, rice, vegetables, etc) - getting recommendations at restaurants (你有什麼推薦？or 你們的招牌是什麼?) - ordering at a coffee shop and their their system for ice and sugar in drinks (糖度冰塊) Theres lots of other little things, not sure if this is helpful.

I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture. My native language is Chinese. I’m teaching Chinese language in jokes and pictures. It makes learning Chinese funny and much easier. Laughter can help us reduce tensions.

I know this is late, but I wonder did you able to learn to recognize Chinese just by reading? I'm learning Chinese now, but I'm so distressed that I need to memorize it by writing, especially since my teacher is kinda old-fashioned.
There are so many words I don't know, so 90% of the content I will listen to sometimes will be overwhelming, so maybe it's not exactly a good method for me. Or the content I'm listening to is too difficult. Sometimes I feel like there is a block with speaking. There are words and sentences I know, but get anxious practicing speaking. Introverted so I don't even talk much to people in English. It's like my brain knows more but the words that come out of my mind make me sound like I'm a baby. Not to mention that when I do speak people don't understand me a lot of the time or misunderstand my pronunciation. Ever feel that a language is just not your forte?
Yea I totally feel you, I'm an introvert too and talking to strangers is definitely not something I'm naturally excited about. I think thats why I love podcasts so much, even if I dont understand much, I just kept listening and listening and eventually I started understanding ore and more! Keep it up, it just takes practice!
You're selling yourself short. I was studying full time in Taiwan so that helped a lot but I definitely still have a lot to learn. I'm sure you could learn a lot faster than you think, you could check out my other videos i tried to share all the things that helped me!

I have been looking up language learning videos to learn what I did wrong (I did a Mandarin course for over a year, but learnt nothing and quit) but I'm not quite confident that I can learn this language yet.

Reading is another great way to learn, highly recommend graded readers, I've linked them in the description.
