Krashen is very confident, a good communicator, and charismatic but his analysis is in my opinion rather simplistic. I used to feel ill at ease when I tried to speak French with an authentic accent. The reason was that I had not internalised the accent, and hence I was trying to copy other people. So what I produced was a parody of the accent, it was obviously fake. To this extent I agree with him. I was trying to become a member of the other group by imitating them. This felt wrong, as if I was betraying my origins, pretending to be something I wasn’t. Imagine as a British English speaker going to America and trying to speak with an American accent, or an American coming to England, and affecting a British English accent. People would think you were weird, or making fun of them. You have to learn not just the syllables, but other aspects such as timing and intonation at a deep level, so that you can use it naturally as a tool to express your feelings. In other words, it becomes a tool of communication, something that is part of you, you use it to achieve your aims, rather than pretending. Krashen’s French accent sounded to me like a parody. And why are we listening to the opinion of someone who cannot speak a foreign language with a native like accent? As an aside, I find it preferable if an English speaker gets the timing and intonation correct with a good attempt at the syllables. Stephen Kaufmann is a good example of someone with a non native French accent that is clear and pleasant, you hear his Canadian accent, but his French is well pronounced and clear. It doesn’t sound false.
