  • In many parts of the world, questions surrounding virginity have seemed to be on the verge of disappearing. But despite the sexual revolution, the idea of preserving virginity has seen a resurgence of late.
The film looks at growing movements promoting abstinence until marriage in the United States and Europe. As more and more women choose to join such movements, those in other places often have no choice. In Maghreb, for example, women must yield to tests to inspect their virginity. The pressure to be able to demonstrate virginity is so great that each year, a number of women resort to operations such as hymenoplasty, to reconstruct the hymen, which can be ruptured in any number of non-sexual ways. Despite all of this obsessive interest, the film shows that, physiologically, virginity does not exist. So what does it stand for, in our contemporary world?

This is so creepy to me. Also passing a girl from one male authority to another male authority, so when does she actually become a woman who gets to choose her own path? This isn't about purity at all, this is all about control. This is infuriating and sickening. Women are full human beings we can make our own choices in life.

Think of it from a perspective of competition.
Men provide resources and Women provide children.
Therefore Men are going to be encouraged to have characteristics that serve their ability to have children.
While Women will be valued more when there’s a guarantee that the children she gives birth to are his.
Not making any moral judgments on it. Just explaining the logic behind this reoccurring pattern across various cultures.

      @sarahissersohn5495 2 года назад +107

@@jacobodom8401 uh-oh- if you’re actually talking about logic, how does it make sense, given what you’re saying, that women have such a shorter recovery time required between sexual acts? Why would it make sense, evolutionarily, for most women to achieve multiple orgasm, so much more easily than most men?
Also, if men’s’ value is just providing resources, why would I ever need a man, if I am already providing that for my own family, without the participation of a man?
Instead, if both participants are valued partners, with individual skill sets and areas of strength which are specific to the human individual, rather than to 50-51% of the entire world’s population, it makes men less fragile, because if it’s just that they’re providing resources,…any man can do that…I can see how that could be very confronting/intimidating for the man. It’s not true though- that’s not how a quality partner of a woman makes her choice- rather, she chooses the particular individual, and it could be for any number of qualities, such as conscientiousness, respect, appreciation, humor, creativity, courage, resourcefulness, etc.
On the other hand, judging by your criteria, why do people bother to stay coupled up, once they’re past the age of reproductive viability? Why would a man bother to stay married, or in a committed relationship with a woman, once she has entered menopause, if reproductive viability is her most important contribution to the relationship?
I am not seeking to have an argument; I have zero interest in being right.
If anything I’ve said, invites you to more critically examine anything you’ve stated, that’s excellent.
I do respect your candor - I hope you are courageous in willingness to re-examine the ideas you’ve represented.

If you value a woman only by her choice to abstain from fricking and nothing else then you should just get a s e x doll or something lol, they're guaranteed to be "pure". True, people who save themselves til marriage shouldn't be mocked for it, and neither should people who chose not to. But neither deserve praise, neither are some type of accomplishment, it's literally just a thing that you do/ don't do.

It is not just as as easy as a choice. You may have given up your virginity very quickly and thought it was a choice, but for those that chose to save until marriage, they did have to go through a very hard struggle, and fought the demons of fornication. They should indeed be praised for defeating demons.

    • @claireelizabeth9431

@@tudormardare66 "Hard struggle". Lmao. Most people who are virgins either can't get anyone to agree to sleep with them or just don't find sleeping with people to be a pleasurable experience. Personally I am ace, I've never had the urge to do it so I am still a virgin. It's not some personal accomplishment or something that I am proud of, or ashamed of, it's literally just a life choice that I made based on my own desires (or lack of desire in my case). Good on you I guess if you want to do it but are waiting until marriage, but if you are legit struggling because of it then I find that a bit weird, like just do what you want with your life. Why are you purposely choosing to make yourself struggle? If you like struggling then cool I guess, as I said, you do you. But don't project your odd beliefs onto others. Virginity is literally just a made up thing anyway, there is no way to be able to tell whether someone is "still a virgin". Unless you get mentally screwed up from sleeping around too much, but that doesn't happen to everyone, just certain people.

    • @claireelizabeth9431
      @claireelizabeth9431 3 года назад +81

@Dr S I should have phrased that differently. What I meant to say is that virginity isn't a physical three dimensional thing, it's a concept that us humans made up, which yes means someone who has never had s e x before. But there is no way to tell whether someone is a virgin or not unless they tell you so. For all you know they could be lying to you and you'd never know. People talk about "loosing" their virginity, which doesn't make any sense because you don't "lose" anything. You just gain an experience. But having s e x for the first time doesn't take anything away from you.
I'm glad that you find my virginity to be interesting lol, but it doesn't make me any better or worse of a person so I don't really get the hype tbh

I’m so thankful I was allowed to be myself and not treated like an object that could be “damaged”. My heart goes out to these poor kids who grow up thinking their worth is measured by their virginity. Not only their own dreams and emotions don’t matter, but the ones who suffer sexual abuse (So common in communities were abstinence is preached but consent is never explained) end up hating themselves because they think they lost their “purity”

    • @toydigger
      @toydigger 2 года назад +18

Statistics say that most abuse worldwide, are done by close relatives.
Not just communities. Regardless of beliefs.
The other side of the coin is that girls and boys are measured by the amount of sexual partners. Which are in some western countries to be about 20.
Knowing something but not acting upon it, are two different things.
It's a scientific fact that women gossip more than man. Would a female be bad for trying to protect naive boys against other girls for this?
These people, including the adult wife and others with the same mindset, which is based upon the Bible, don't consider it to be bad. They don't want to be protected by a rebel or player.
As for wanting to have physical evidence, having no trust is the main issue.
Of course it's good to be able to fend for yourself, but as the USA has a high crime rate and the girls are still very young, it's understandable. The father wants to make sure the future spouse is sincere, especially in an age where young women are abused by loverboys and social media.
It would have been better if the documentary would balance the topic by pointing out on all the requirements of the man, biblical speaking.
This way, it doesn't look like a Christian male just want to control the female as some sort of slave.
One of the main messages in the Bible is that morality goes hand in hand with self control. And having a balance in things that are good.
In that line, the anthropologist saying "what about" doesn't count for it's already in that same package.
This goes for both male and female.
Almost everything in life is just a matter of choice, self control, being responsible and exercising willpower.

Here is what my parents taught me about sex when I was a teenage girl.
My father: nothing. Women's sexuality was not exactly his area of expertise, so he kept out of it.
My mother: how to recognize when I am ready to have sex, how to have sex responsibly, how to resist peer pressure when it comes to sexuality, how to have safe sex, both it terms of condom use and in terms of partner choice, how to communicate with sexual partners and listen to them/demand they listen to me, how to recognize sexual assault and aggression. Very importantly, she also encouraged me to discover myself sexually and understand a bit of what I like or don't like before I go out to seek partners with whom to try it out.
Neither of them ever mentioned the words "virginity" or "purity", and I am eternally grateful to them for that (and many other things).

They think women as a property, and marying a nonvirgin is more like a using a second hand car. Would you rather to use second hand car or new car??? And it doesn't matter if their wife had sex with another man "before or after" marriage. They feel cheated the same way!! And if your daughter is not virgin, basically you get bullied by society , they call you names like pimp (especially by the groom and his family for not be able to keep your daughter on the line), having big horns.....etc
In these societies the honor is linked to sexual activity rather than cheating, stealing, lying..etc. Check out the societies with "virginitymania", they almost are all corrupted!!!

Fair enough. Those excuses for assault are indeed ridiculous. That aside, it is interesting to see how men must always shut up about things like mood swings in periods of menstruation and pregnancy. Because we don't experience it, we can't talk about it. We don't have a vagina or uterus, so we can't talk about it or make any decisions about it. So I put it to you: you as a woman, and to all women. You don't have high levels of testosterone. Your levels of testosterone peak out at max 75ng/dl. While men's can top out at 1200ng/dl. That's 16 times as much. As you know, testosterone, among other things, maintained the libido. So is it really such a terrible idea to dress modestly around people who can get 16 times as horny as you can possibly get? You have no experience with that. You have no idea what it is like. And if you say "well that is their problem". Fine, I'll accept that. But then you must also accept that women's mood swings and hormonal imbalances are their problem. And men have 0 responsibility to care about that. It's either both, or none. Can't cherry pick. Me, personally, I think we should all be compassionate and understanding. And from your side, that means understanding that men, especially younger men, are incredibly influenced by hormones and that dressing sexy or provocative does nothing to help that. But hey, that's just me. I'll be happy to spread the word among men to not give a shit about women's hormonal imbalances either if you prefer it that way. Just let me know :)

@Zee A Men and woman are not the same in the west. A man who gets alot of girls is considered high value by both men and woman.
Woman think a virgin man is a loser, lacks confidence and is not fun. while men think virgin woman are pure.
Getting sex for a man is not easy. So a man who sleeps with alot of woman is considered a high value. a man who has status, money , looks and is typically blue check fame man. As for a woman, she just has to exist “i.e be a woman”to get sex thrown at her. Cause testosterone is the driver of sex in men. Always on and always ready.
A woman who sleeps around is considered a 304. Not someone to being home to mom.
in reality a small minority of men are having sex. Because the things that make a man attractive take time to develop. usually in his late 20s and early 30s. Money, confidence, status and career. While for a woman she just has to look good to men. Men are visual. So yeah thats why men’s virginity is not regulated by society and customs. Your way off viewing it as a double standard.
Its not a double standard because they are not the same. It would be a double standard if they were the same gender and were treated differently.

As much as super neutral documentaries are nice, I appreciate the very blunt "anti" stance this documentary takes.

The concept of the hymen is not pseudoscience. The concept of the hymen indicating sexual activity _is_ pseudoscience, and that's what I'm referring to.
The hymen does serve a purpose - it protects the vaginal canal from infection during infancy. Beyond that point, it is redundant.
There are a couple of misconceptions about the hymen. Namely:
      1. That it is a seal of some kind. It's actually just an elastic, ring-like membrane.
      2. That it tears
      a) only during penetrative sex
      b) always during penetrative sex
      c) and remains torn forever
In reality, the hymen (being elastic) is able to stretch, and isn't supposed to tear at all. When a woman is adequately aroused and secreting enough of her own natural lubricant, there isn't enough friction against the hymen to tear it and cause bleeding.
Also, there are many things that can cause the hymen to tear other than penetrative sex when not adequately aroused. When a woman is riding a bike or a horse, doing gymnastics, or doing any kind of sport, she's obviously not going to be aroused or prepared for any kind of penetration or vaginal manipulation. However, in an accident in any of the above sports, the hymen can actually tear if there is sudden impact to the crotch (for example, a gymnast falling on a beam, or doing the splits for the first time). These are all non sexual ways that the hymen can be affected. It's not sexy, it's just physics.
Furthermore, the hymen is a tissue like any other, and is fully capable of repairing itself if it _does_ tear. A woman can bleed having sex for the first time due to lack of arousal, and then her hymen heals and she can bleed having sex for the 100th time due to lack of arousal.
The hymen isn't pseudoscience, but the ideas around it are, and the entire medical field actively laughs at anyone who thinks it's a reliable way to determine sexual activity of a woman.

@Dr S the only thing that I learn is that there are many other ways a woman can get microchimerism other than sex. Blood transfusion, having an older brother, spontaneous abortion upon others. Therefore is not exclusive to sexual intercourse. The second study you mentioned concludes that young girls can have microchimerism as a result of multiple factors that doesn’t involve sex. They were found on 13.6% of the total subjects. There’s also not a clear idea of what the origin may be. In conclusion: the presence of male cells in women is not exclusively a result of intercourse. You state this like it’s something bad, but studies like “opposite effects of microchimerism on breast and colon cancer” found that women with microchimerism were less likely to develop those types of cancer in their life. So again: your argument is based on misleading information with sexist overtones.

In my personal experience growing up in the purity movement among the evangelical Christians, I had a much more balanced upbringing. Both men and women were taught equally(although separately) that virginity was important and sex was reserved for marriage. The burden was never on the women and in fact laid more on the men who were responsible to keep themselves and the ladies safe. They reasoned that it was honorable to God but also that there were some practical benefits too (i.e. preventing STDs and avoiding complicated sexual scenarios, and added relationship baggage). Respect for the opposite gender was certainly stressed and this effect seemed to raise genuine gentlemen among the people I grew up with. Now most of them are married and the biggest effect I see is less baggage in their lives than the average person.
That being said, I certainly agree with detractors that it's weird and potentially harmful to take this movement to extremist levels as it tends to create people who feel sexually repressed and act out creepily, but on the whole in my sphere that was a minority. No, it isn't. Regardless of the attempted societal normalization of female hedonism, a woman is valued for what she is, and men are valued for what they can provide generally speaking. It is for this reason that women past the age of fertility age rapidly. Biology makes no mistakes. Once past the age of fertility, there is no need for a woman to attract a man from a biological standpoint - therefore hormones responsible for keeping a woman looking youthful or physically attractive dwindle over time, eventually down to nothing.

I think the question why a woman's virginity is consdidered more important than a man's is can be easily answered from a historical perspective. This moral code is far older than paternity tests. So, if a woman got pregnant she and her family were stuck with the baby and the father could simply decline that he fathered the child and he was out of the picture. And even today it's usually the girls's family that raises the child when a teenager get's pregnant. So it's somehow understandable that parents care more about their daughters virginity than about their sons. That doesn't mean I'm okay with this double standards, it just means that I understand the parents motives to some degree.

    • @smokexsmoke99
      @smokexsmoke99 8 месяцев назад

Also, there needs to be more oversight on teenage boys recklessly impregnating teenage girls than there is. People seem to forget the fact that, that's someone else's daughter that their son could get pregnant.

The verses basically say if a groom claimed the bride to be non v1rg1n on their 1st night then the bride should be put in front of her dads door to be st0n3d t d3ath by all the men of the town. The only way to save her is 'the cloth' that should be provided by her dad & mom. Whats is this cloth? A white cloth soaked red by her v1rgnal blood. Imagine the method to produce it 😣😥 And it should be done prior to the 1st night so the groom wont play them. We know if the dad unable to show the cloth then shes st0ned to d3ath. But if the dad could show it all red, then the groom should pay 100 shekels to her dad & remained married to her.

I knew a woman who was upset that her young son learned an offensive term at school. She was more upset at the loss of innocence than anything else, wanting to protect him and keep him from outside (corrupting) influences for as long as possible. I think to some extent this is similar, sexuality plays into it, but it's not so much about being overly concerned with the specifics of the daughter's sexual life as it is about the loss of innocence, a father wanting to keep her his 'little girl' for as long as possible. And I realize there is some overlap, but I hope I'm making sense of what I'm trying to get across, that it's not 'just' about sexuality.
However, the idea that a girl loses her innocence once she has sex is a very harmful way of thinking, and it comes across as shaming women for being sexual. And also, your kid needs to know about the (corrupting) influences of the world in order to make good decisions later on in their life. Sheltering your kid from stuff like this is not always a good thing and can actually be very harmful in the long run. Also, it's very creepy and disgusting that the fathers who have their daughters be in purity balls will try to be surrogate boyfriends to them.
These fathers who have their daughters be in purity balls, they're not only being "overprotective". Like many fathers, they just don't want their daughters to ever have sex, deep in the recesses of their minds. Many fathers make jokes about it. You can google "So you want to date my daughter" and come up with endless memes from men who are trying to scare all young men away.
However, when you are a father and you have a daughter, you have to accept the fact that your daughter is going to have sex someday, and she needs acknowledge about these kind of things in order to make good decisions when faced with them. Sheltering them from these kind of things can end up actually causing them a lot of harm in the long run.
To me, it's very disturbing, creepy, and disgusting when a father obsesses over his daughter's sex life.

I thought virginity is just the fact of not having had sex yet. Not the presence of certain tissue.
Also, I think if someone is a virgin themselves and want to marry someone who is also a virgin, I don't see the issue. It becomes hypocritical when you yourself are not and demand virginity from your partner. And it becomes a problem when one gender is shamed and sometimes even abused for it and the other isn't at all and can do as they please.

I mean historically virginity had the purpose to not get pregnant, when there is only one person to care about the baby. But today there are contraceptives, and even if you still get pregnant your parents live way longer, so grandpa/grandma can help better and even most states help a little for the mother to raise a child and survive.
There is no need for a concept of virginity anymore. There only should be way better education about the body (especially the hymen), about sex, about diseases and of course also the value of each person as a person and their freedom to choose which ever path they want to go.

Virginity is epitome of honest and trust and goodness Islam preaches it and virtue and morality not immorality, Islam prohibits intimacy before marriage or outside marriage . Look what this progress brought (increased to the world ilegitimate children and children , thrown outside or in orphanage and STDs , Muslim countries have the lowest STDs rate thanks to Allah devine rule, for example Somalia . So stop this lies .
Virginity is obligated to men and women in Islam so think stop feelings

The reason why all cultures value virginity historically is because it was the best way to ensure paternity. This was just the logical solution for men to protect themselves and to ensure that their child was theirs.
This fundamental fact is also why women don't have as much interest in valuing virgin men because they don't need to worry about maternity uncertainty in the way that men do. It's also why it's a double standard because the biological realities vary between the sexes.
Now with modern technology all these old practices are unnecessary. Paternity tests are widely available and much more reliable than something like a hymen test
