My fiancé can tell a Danya video popping up my phone by ear with his warlike orchestral intro and she knows “hey guys this is John” means the next 60 minutes are spoken for. Thanks, John!
You are the only chess channel I know about who actually bothers to say the moves out loud. It makes your games far easier to follow, and I wish more people would do it.
Thanks! I try to verbalize the variations I'm thinking about, at least. For game reviews, I think agadmator has always been good about saying the moves in the entire game.
It's very interesting how chess has these little moments I consider "flashes of brilliance" at all levels. One of the things that keeps me coming back is experiencing these little amazing thoughts like John had with his slow, methodical rook idea (although for me MUCH less advanced) and then realizing that even though the idea was crazy, it was also beautiful and it worked. It's incredible to see that even at IM-level, there are still hidden gems in positions that are seen, briefly considered, then discard as being crazy.
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I love the Ruy Lopez! Edit: Since you wanted feedback I do feel like you got a little "lazy" with the Qb5 move. You saw how the move could complicate things if he played Qa3 but since you saw Rf3 as a backstop safety move you went for it anyway. I think subconsciously you didn't think your opponent would find Qa3 (and he found it rather quickly). It was like a low risk, medium/high reward move compared to f5. Just my impressions! Thanks for the video.
Wow. Just amazing. It's so great to have you unravel your thinking during the "interesting" moments. The way you marshaled a QS attack, then pivoted to the KS is just amazing and is inspirational for those of us who get in similar calcified no win positions. I think a new series "pushing the pawns" might be in order! I will subscribe, Hundo P!!
Wow that interesting engine line of leaving The rook on f4 and slowly inching the other rook around it - that's so fascinating. it's almost like a permanent duck in duckchess
Episode 300 ! Wow For a second i thought u were playing 300 Elo player 😂 I think chess popularity is surging For many reasons But in my opinion helpful/entertaining content creator like you is the main reason Keep up the good work we LOVE IT 👍🏻♥️
Great game and thorough analysis! Reminded me a lot of the book "Imagination in Chess" you'd alluded to in an earlier video, and the idea of reciprocal logic with some of your moves (Qg5 and Kh2 especially).
Ok, you didn't find the fastest way to win but your ultraslow Kh2!! was a true brilliant John moment. It's easy to say now, seeing how the game progressed, but I would never have prioritized playing on the queen side, f5 instead of Qb5 was way too tempting in my mind.
Great game, commentary and analysis! Really enjoyed this vid. I absolutely love the Spanish, my favourite opening in chess and especially as white. Just extremely rich in ideas, with natural and principled classical plans. So often in the Spanish I get those doubled pawns in the centre as white and can just steamroll black off the board without them being able to find counterplay.
Fascinating game and analysis. I definitely would have played f5, but that's only because I play a line in the Bishop's Opening recommended in an old 1e4 book by John Emms where such f5 pushes are a a constant threat. I was very impressed with your visualisation to see b5 as a defence for Black. No way would I have seen that even one move ahead! As for the engine's e6 push followed by fxe6 f7!!, I think these kinds of pawn moves are the hardest sequences to visualize in chess, where you don't recapture the pawn, but push the adjacent pawn. It's so easy to miss these, both when calculating your own lines and also, more importantly, when calculating your opponent's resources.... Great video. Thanks once again.
53:43 Definitely an interesting moment, my intuition was that f5 must be good and like you said, ...f6 would be an important concession. I probably would have played f5 without thinking much but it's because I may not have even identified Qb5 as a candidate move. One factor that seems to effect the engine evaluation is that the knight on a5 is posted well positionally, but if suddenly White abruptly switches to a direct attack, then it will be hard for the knight to come back. Qg5! is very nice to manually stop ...g5. I've been trying to work on identifying my opponent's best defensive resources when calculating and this move greatly appealed to me. I don't agree with Stockfish who harshly gives it a question mark. Thanks for the upload!
It's not only the longer time control. Playing with increment makes also a big difference. A minimum level of quality is maintained throughout the game. Playing against strong opponents, as opposed to beginners, makes a difference too!
I've only played 2 classical games, I have to just sit my phone down and wait for the bell sound maybe it's easier on a PC idk. At 52:19 tbh I'd probably play something like Qg3 or Rb1 Im impressed with how John called it so accurately and his opponent, even though he played the "wrong move" he saw exactly what the computer saw
Nice. Hunkering down k-side was perhaps not so hot for Black, and especially not a fan of giving the Q tempo with f4 or allowing f6. I'm a fan of knowing for sure that you have a great fortress before 'turtling up', and if you don't have it locked, be active!
Hey, John. Thanks for the video. I don’t see the issue with Nc4 at 1:00:05. It seems to me you’re still up to a pawn with Qxb7. Would you mind explaining?
It's kind of weird. It's pretty clear that black doesn't *really* understand the opening, as against most non-critical tries against most lines (including 3...Nf6 4. Qe2) black should very clearly play a quick Bc5 to equalize, since Bc5 is usually a bit difficult to achieve in the main lines, yet black played the passive 4...d6?! and immediately gave white their opening advantage back.
Nice, that was some fast math on the celcius conversion! ( 8 + 32 ) / 2 + (8+32) / 20, so -20 + -2 is the mental trick to how I'd do it though of course it's -40*5/9 techinically, so this trick is off by 1/180*40
in reference to 53:40, I did think as I was watching the video in real time, you played a bit of hope chess with b5, even seeing the critical move a3, and treated the choice more positionally than tactically, obviously your radar came back on the next move with the whole knight b1 debate, but perhaps thinking tactically and doing some calculations a move earlier would have been a cleaner way to play
53:30 I would play f5 without much thought but I wouldn't know what the plan is 🤣 Maybe if they reply f6 I would have played e6 gaining a passed pawn and be satisfied. That said, if I saw Qb5 is a fork, I would play it, although there's not much chance I would've seen the Qa3 counterplay.
HEY john, I know you prob get a lot of requests, but could you show a nimzo indian game if you get the chance? I'd like to see you explain your thoughts in the positions that arise from it. Glad to see you active on yt again! Thanks for all the content
John is a great player and I appreciate his videos and instruction, but 'artist' is a long punch. The subtle moves and intricacies of a high level GM are beyond our mortal comprehension. Those players are 'true artists'. No disrespect to John.
I too would have mistakenly played Qb5, the threats just seemed more tangible to me. f5 was one of those moves that only after the game (with the help of the engine) would I have understood the long term advantage.
Just finished watching, a very instructive video. Shout out to Neverness who actually saw that pushing of the E-pawn (edit: on move 27). When you couldn't find a follow up on Nb1 followed by Qb2 I was thinking Nd2 connecting the rooks again and hanging your Knight but his would be hanging too but while checking the after-the-game-analysis I did spot Nd2 in the engine analysis and they said it's close to equal as Black should then go for the free c3 pawn instead of free knight for free knight, which is a free pawn that also makes the queen protect their knight again.
Is that the Improved Steinitz? I've played it a bunch of times but I just randomly play moves after O-O, which you didn't do, so I guess I just answered my own question. I've done well with it anyways.
I had a remarkably similar end game to this one this evening, except that I did get him to double Pawns on the F file, and he kept his Queen in the back guarding everything. I finally got through but no, I didn't see the Queen sacrifice.
I've started to notice it's often a pawn advance that improves the position. It's so easy to fall in love with a static pawn structure and forget to look at dynamic alternatives!
About this f5 vs Qd5 move:I would definitely go for Qd5,cause I'm one greedy bastard))Then after Qa3 I felt really excited about this Nb1,would probably play like this myself and likely met the circumstances..But that's where my thoughts were)
I'm a huge fan, but some constructive criticism: I found it extremely frustrating to watch this entire video as I must have watched literally 20 ads throughout the full video (one every few minutes). I understand it's a longer video, and I don't mind watching some ads to support other RUclipsrs, but it really was extremely distracting (especially as I was watching in bed before falling asleep, and the loud ads almost acted as jump scares) to get another ad constantly. Perhaps tone down the # of ads a bit!
I watch John's videos and then charge into my 1400 games all confident and proceed to lose. If I get a match with him on Lichess Plays my ego insists I'll win because he's just a lowly IM 🤣
The critical moment at 26:55 is marked by my hoodie string crossing to the other side
RIP hoodie string
Hoodie looks tight
Is everyone just gonna ignore John getting the conversion from °F to °C spot on? that was incredible

Thanks for an excellent # 300, Minnesota Fins. I can proudly say I have watched all 300 games in this series.

I really like the way you talk through your calculations during the game. This is a good time control.

John vs Danya? That would give us two great videos to watch. Seen from both sides.
I'd love to see JohnB and GingerGm get a load more subscribers. Gotham is nearing 3m which is crazy

Another really great game!
Reminds me of game 9 Anand vs Carlsen wcc
I too would have mistakenly played Qb5, the threats just seemed more tangible to me. f5 was one of those moves that only after the game (with the help of the engine) would I have understood the long term advantage.
In the end the bishop did not choose to retreat via the scenic route around the coral reef.
The game Bronstein-Keres Budapest 1950 features a very similar attacking theme to end the game (with similar defensive resources for Black).
I don't think his username is pronounced "Da Best Opening", John. It's probably just "D4 Best Opening" :)
Just finished watching, a very instructive video. Shout out to Neverness who actually saw that pushing of the E-pawn (edit: on move 27). On 19 I'd go queen B8 every day of the week. it seems like such an obvious free pawn. Wild how complicated the lines get following Qa3
some thoughts on the game:
was happy that I saw the Rh4 move in response to Qxc3 :)
I’ve never smelt my moves, maybe that’s why I’m not an IM :)
Is that the Improved Steinitz? I've played it a bunch of times but I just randomly play moves after O-O, which you didn't do, so I guess I just answered my own question. I've done well with it anyways.

Repping the Midwest and its way too cold weather!!
My takeaway: When you're calculating an attacking line that's not working, ask yourself, "What hidden resource is completely off my radar?"
I've started to notice it's often a pawn advance that improves the position. It's so easy to fall in love with a static pawn structure and forget to look at dynamic alternatives!
